Transformers Live Action

I had massive doubts about seeing this, especially given Michael Bay's embarrassed "I hope you like this" speech and the start credits

A MICHAEL BAY FILM

BASED ON THE TOYS

BY

HASBRO

Massive laughs right there.

But most of the movie was entertaining, I reckon most Transformers fans would be happy, the film plot isn't any better than the simplistic cartoons however it's self aware enough to make fun of itself. There's a lot of fun to be had with just how effective a giant robot hiding as a giant truck would be.

The fight scenes are amazing, there's a couple of early firefights where you think that there's no way anyone could get out alive.

Soundtrack? Can't say I noticed it above the metal on metal thuds.

If I was Michael Bay I'd be happy with the result, a couple of bits ja but if you just want a movie that's entertaining in a big budget sort of way this is the movie for you.

Oh, thanks a lot, Phelan. I definitely wanted to see that before the movie came out!

Sorry bud. Tis only a tiny part of the movie - and is already out all over the place. But I should have linked rather than IMG'd it.

I'll make it up to you somehow!

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The TRANSFORMERS saga has captivated kids for more than 20 years. Coming on the heels of the highly anticipated live-action theatrical film being released July 3rd, by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures, Cartoon Network and Hasbro, Inc. are announcing today that the next generation of the epic animated series is being jointly developed by the two entities for a 2008 debut on the network in the U.S. The eye-popping 2-D animated series is a new twist on the original high-octane, animated action-adventure series with new characters alongside legends such as OPTIMUS PRIME and MEGATRON. Each episode will present a standalone storyline featuring everyday heroes who do good deeds that triumph over evil. TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED series will be co-produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

Twenty-six, half-hour episodes will be produced as well as a 90-minute special of TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED which is scheduled for release in early 2008 on Cartoon Network in the U.S. Matt Youngberg (Teen Titans, The Batman) is the supervising director, Derrick Wyatt (Teen Titans) will provide the character designs and Sam Register (Ben 10, Teen Titans) will serve as executive producer of the series. We are thrilled to be working with Hasbro to help re-imagine this amazing franchise for a new generation of fans.”

Here is the second life interview with Bay, Fox, Shia etc

Worth it to hear Megan Fox talk about her avatar's gigantic tits!

Oh and if you go into Second Life and type in Sector Seven you can go along to the building which has Megatron in it, and other cool stuff :)

Yeah I've just come back from watching it, I payed for VIP tickets yet was stuck with tossers smoking weed, talking on mobile phones, being sick and going MENTAL at every transformer fanboy 'moneyshot'. Like proper standing up and jumping and screaming. So this could effect my thoughts on it...

Anyway, firstly I'm not really a transformers fan. I just went hoping to see lots of big robots smashing things up and well I wasn't dissapointed. There is also ALOT of transforming. However, as expected, it was full of terrible american humour ('funny' black guys and 'funny' teenage romantic mishaps etcT etc). It has shitty government crap going on with a forced storyline just for the sake of giving a reason for big robots to fight each other.

So yeah its very much like a childrens show, at certain points I thought I was watching power rangers. Then I remembered it WAS actually a kids show. They have made it specifically over the top and cheesy to try and cater to the fanboys, I'm quite sure on the whole fanboys will like it.

So yeah, basically on the whole its what I call a 'good' shit movie.

Sorry you got stuck in a cinema full of wankers. Nothing worse than that. Did you think about complaining about them smoking weed?

I sure would have. Actually I would probably have told them to put them out straight away. Then complained if they ignored me.

Can't be bothered with wankers like that!

Such a fun film

Saw it in advance yesterday after the Dutch meet and had a wonderful time.

I thought would be a lot like ID4 but there is no American flag waving, no patriotic presidential speeches and no stupid ending.

Bay doesn't waste much time on romatic interludes either, something I was afraid of. It's surprising how much is played for laughs, this film never takes itself too seriously. Not all the comedy works, but I thought most of the bits with Bumblee and his radio were really funny.

The leads are decent enough, with the added bonus of Fox looking insanely hot and Turturro hamming it up. Cullen is fucking great as the voice of Prime.

As for the action, oh man, the action...

I've read this film is less expensive than Spidey 3 and Pirates 3 but looks much bigger than both of them. It's much more fun as well (and not nearly as long). ILM did some of the best work of it's impressive history here, if not the best.

It doesn't have the same rapid-fire editing as most of Bay's films, there's some of that (and it does a good job of capturing the chaos of big robots wreaking havoc in an American city or military base), but Bay's confident to show some of the robot action in slow motion. Here you can really feel the impact of those big things smashing into each other and even make out parts that are indivually moving. Crazy stuff.

I also love the tons of debris that are onscreen, especially when the robots fly trough buildings.

The fact that Bay shot this so fast is testament to how much grip he had on the whole thing.

The little robot is annoying but his final action scene (which references Bad Boys 2) makes up for it.

Oh, and don't leave when the credits come up.

I had a great time, but if you expect anything more than a gigantic popcorn film your clearly in the wrong state of mind.

Some other thoughts regarding the action scenes:

Fucking hell, it's hard to tell what's the coolest of the lot.

Prime slo mow punching Bonecrusher before slamming his swordhand into his face, Prime catching on to Starscream in plane form and flying through a a building, the camera going underneath Bonecrusher's vehicle while he transforms, Strascream taking on a couple of fighter planes, Megatron ripping Jazz in two, Bumblebee helping out the humans...

Nah, my fave was the insane sequence where the robots (I can't remeber which ones) were shooting rockets and doing crazy flips and slides in the city. In one insane shot we se a woman screaming in slow motion while the action unfolds abover her, it's fucking awesome).

There's an interesting interview with Shia LaBeouf in the latest issue of DeathRay (a new SFX-type magazine which is rather good) and he's basically a die-hard fan of Transformers. He's also said that ILM mentioned that they've never done effects as complicated as the ones on Transformers and if they were to showcase their best work, it would be this movie which they'd want people to look at. This is also a choice cut from the interview -

"Look, as long as you make sure that Megatron is in and you make sure that [Peter] Cullen is Optimus - if anyone else is Optimus, the movie is terrible. It has to be Cullen. Frank Welker is much older than Cullen and his voice has changed. I heard him in sessions. He'd be great as another robot, but to play Megatron you need someone powerful, and Hugo Weaving is powerful.

I really can't wait to see this. I may take a day off work.

.::: Seen it this morning.

It's a comedy. Brainless fun, but as soon as you engage a braincell, characters and plot fall apart.

And that's disregarding the comparisons with the franchise.

Voice acting for the TF's must've taken, what, one day tops? Very disappointed by what that instigates.

Utterly miffed this seems to use the patented CGI Combat Blur Filter. Battles could have been great if they didn't look like shards of metal in a close-up moving around randomly. Especially as the opening battles were excellent. The finale made me wish I had a pause-button, just to discern whether that was an arm or a leg (not really the movie's fault; it's a pet peeve that has been growing steadily ever since CGI became more sophisticated).

If you have a low affinity with the franchise it's enjoyable trash.

If you have a high affinity, you'll either be enraged this isn't the cartoon or you'll be disappointed at the wasted potential. This could have been so much better and it could've stuck to its guns all it liked for that.

Don't listen to this man, he's clearly insane*. He must be cause he eats weird fruit bars, dislikes RE4 and likes shitty amusement park rides :D

I'd advise him to share a room with Cacky and make sweet mecha love. I can't wait to see the offspring

*Nah, he's a a good egg, but TF is really fucking enjoyable.

.::: Oh, the results would be travesty. :D

Nah, sorry but brainless movies aren't my thing. I really can't throw myself at the mercy of a movie, without thinking about what's happening.

There are literally shitloads of inconsistencies and they nag my brain with their wooden splinters. I did enjoy the movie though, don't get me wrong. There are loads of references in there for the cartoon-fans (really geeky stuff, I must add). But there's so much wasted. And to think I was worried that Starscream might come across as a hulking gorilla in the movie. Damn, at least that would've given him a character to begin with.

True though; it could've been sooo much worse.

Actually, I can kinda seem where my fellow Dutchie is coming from. But what bothered him, didn't bother me in the slightest (well, apart from Frenzy, I presume) and I thought the action was really impressive.

Ah well, at least we both enjoyed it. :D

A bit like the Dutch meet then, which had far more geeky references than TF

So, is there any decent speeding in the movie?

Anyway, I don't think I'll go and see it. I used to be a casual TF watcher back when it was still broadcast in the Netherlands, though I never really knew a lot about the characters and stuff. Perhaps I will go when a friend asks me, but I won't be the one to come up with the idea.

Oh, you and your speed

Not knowing anything about TF might be a big advantage actually, you just miss a couple of geeky references. Grab a coke, some popcorn and enjoy!
