Transformers Live Action

But Transformers is the event moviegoers have been waiting for. It's got giant fucking robots doing huge fucking damage to a lot of fucking expensive hardware and property. Expecting much more than that out of a picture like this is to be an idiot.

If I wasn't already, SOLD! And that's exactly what I said it'd be about 12ty billion pages back :)

Dear Lord.

Indeed. There is a scene where Bay keeps the camera on her while she bends over to look under the hood of a car. It latst ages (Bay cutting quick, my arse) and it even makes sense.

It's glorious like most of the film.

From Comingsoon.net

According to Variety, Paramount and DreamWorks are claiming an estimated $8.8 million for Michael Bay's Transformers in its "preview screenings" in a number of theatres starting at 8pm last night. That's rougly 67% of what Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End made when it took a similar approach on Thursday May 24, before grossing just under $140 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.

Yeah it took $2m Australian on its opening day over here.

And was Paramount biggest opening day for any of their movies in Australia.

Did really well over the whole weekend - no stats out yet though.

A lot of my friends tried to see it this weekend. Only one made it in.

Even David and Margeret (Australia's oldest and most well known movie reviewers) gave it three and a half stars out of five. And they hate Michael Bay.

Not sure if its been mentioned before but I have just seen THIS up a IMDB, so it looks like we are definately going to get a sequel.

Im going to cry I think at the end of the month as Im not going to be able to watch this at the cinema due to the Spanish refusing to play films in spain without a spanish dub :o

Went watching it last night. Spoilerific favourite bits, in order of spoilerness:

The KOH-koh-koh-koh-koh transform noise from the cartoon is worked in to some of the transformations!

Sam rubs the dirt from the shiny black centre of Bumblebee's wheel to reveal the Autobots logo, in a nod to the heat activated logos on the toys!

Optimus' voice opening the movie - I knew it was the original cartoon guy, but fuck me, that was good!

Optimus slicing the head from the shoulders of Bonecrusher!

Not so good:

The action is pretty hard to follow, as there's too much going on; the transformations in particular make you think "that was incredible, but what the fuck did I just watch?"

The corny lines went a little far. Especially the "more than meets the eye" bits.

More to come as my hangover subsides.

No doubt about it with the ending (not massively spoilerific as you can probably guess the outcome of the movie).

Decepticons dumped into the deepest trench in the sea (another nice nod to the cartoon and their under-sea base); Starscream spiralling off into space.

We could be looking at some impressive figures once the weekend totals are in .

http://www.comingsoon.net/blog/2007/07/tra...new_tuesday.php

Transformers Sets New Tuesday Record!

After making over $8 million in Monday preview screenings, Paramount/DreamWorks' Transformers brought in $27.4 million in its first full day according to estimates, easily setting a new Tuesday box office record over Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest's $15.7 million made last year. It has grossed an impressive $36.3 million in just 28 hours.

The Warner Bros. comedy License to Wed made a less than spectacular $2.2 million its opening day, and though it shouldn't be nearly as frontloaded as the fan favorite summer popcorn flick, the abysmal reviews for the movie probably won't help it do very well over the weekend. It's probably looking to make around $15 million in its first six days.

After a soft opening weekend, Disney/Pixar's Ratatouille has held up over the last two weekdays making more than $7.5 million each day and bringing its gross to $61.8 million in five days.

Bruce Willis' Live Free or Die Hard continues to make over $4.4 million each day despite being hit worse by the release of Transformers.

Check back tomorrow for further updates on the 4th of July box office.

What the hell were people going on about earlier in this thread when they said that this film doesn't suffer from quick-edit syndrome? Having now seen it, I can't think of any other film that suffers more from it. Fair enough, the end is a blast, but practically every FX shot up to that point is directed like a lazy pop-promo. This film suffers in exactly the same way as practically every other Hollywood movie in the last 5 years - it isn't nearly as ambitious as it should have been. Moderately enjoyable trash/10.

I love The Rock too. That film isn't a special FX fest. Transformers is. The Transformers are meant to be the stars of the show, but at practically every stage of the film, you are given scant detail of what they are doing. And even when you do get more lingering shots, the overly complex Transformer designs mean that you aren't always sure of what you're seeing. Far too much human stuff in this film too, just as others had feared previously. Only two of the films humans are of any interest/consequence - so why waste so much time on the rest of them? They add zero to the proceedings, and you just end up wishing that you could see more of the Transformers.

I disagree. Yes, the TF are the stars of the show but we see them a lot. It's not like they're on screen for 10 minutes, the last 40 minutes is basically all out Transformers action and even in the slower middle part we see them a lot.

And I really didn't find the action that hard to follow. Maybe it's because I saw The Bourne Supremacy again recently (which I dig btw), but I found Bay a lot more restrained here than in Armageddon for example.

Examples:

Take the Blackout and Scorponok attacks for example. Lots of lingering shots of the entire base being destroyed and overhead shots that show the battle between Scorponok and the militairy.

It's the same story in most of the end battle. Optimus vs. Bonecrusher is a good example. The camera moves underneath Bonecrusher, we get a highly detailed transformation, BC skids over the road and smahes into a bus. We cut to Optimus, who is ready for impact (again a highly detailed scene, you can see bits of him spinning). Then you get the impact, filmed in slow motion, and we go into a wide shot that shows both of them falling and taking out bits of the road in the process (the films makes excellent use of debris).

The fight ends with OP slow mo punching BC before slamming his sword into his face.

I thought it was a superb fight scene and not at all hard to follow.

Most of the city battle felt the same for me. I love the wide shot of Optimus grabbing the plane while it plows through a building from left to right, for example. And again, lots of slow mo shots make it easier to follow the action and admire the details.

I'm not saying there weren't any quick edits, but that doesn't mean it's all hard to follow.

It didn't hamper my enjoyment in the slightest and offered me the biggest spectacle of this summer by far. Even though 300 (which wasn't really a summer movie) trumps it in the action stakes.

The Juggernaut just keeps on rolling

Transformers Adds Another $29 Million!

Source: ComingSoon.net

July 5, 2007

The Transformers train keeps rolling along as it had its best day yet on the 4th of July holiday, grossing just under $29 million according to ShowBIZ Data. In two-and-a-half days, it has grossed $65.6 million, set a new Tuesday box office record and become the third-highest grossing movie on a Wednesday, surpassing movies like Star Wars: Episode I and Mel Gibson's The Passion of The Christ which both opened on a Wednesday. It's looking like it will be in heated battle with executive producer Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds to become the second-highest grossing 4th of July opener over the weekend and may come close to $150 million in its first week of business.

I saw this yesterday and, though it started nicely, I disengaged about half way through. The robot-on-robot action is shot too close up, with too much motion blur, and thousands of different little mechanical parts all too close on screen made discerning what was happening tiring. Eventually it felt like Michael Bay was pouring boxes of spare parts on my eyes. My brain said, "Okay, that'll do for me I think. I will give you the nod if Megan Fox comes back."

The audience applauded at the end! Madders.

Jinkies, Michael Bay had a bit of a moan on his blog last week before taking it down a few hours later...but not before it was saved via the might of the intraweb, etc:

The movie is over.

Wow that was a hard one, but I must tell you it was so much fun. The most difficult actors I’ve ever worked with, besides Bruce Willis, are Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. They took every single one of my days for a year. But they are well worth the work. I’ve just traveled 36,000 miles around the world (in two weeks) and had the most amazing premiere at the Taormina film festival in an ancient, Greek-built theatre that existed well before the birth of Christ. I loved seeing the reactions to the film from so many different cultures. This movie really travels around the world. I’m so excited for everyone to see it. Thanks to all you that supported me on this film.

Just so I set the story straight, my budget started a $145 Million it crept to $150 and some change – I’m very proud of that – the fact that we are half the cost of all these other summer blockbusters. I see people doubt that out on the net, but anyone want to challenge me I’ll put a ten thousand dollar bet down on the table right now.

Even when the studio tried to ship me out to Canada or shoot down with Aussies - I looked but I knew we were dead up there. I needed my crew that I have been loyal to for years, they are the best in the world. Besides I believe American movies that portray America, should be made in America. I cut my fee 30% so I could make this at home. I knew this was right for the movie so I asked the other producers to join – Ian and Lorenzo did, and the two others (that came attached to the project) Tom Desanto and Don Murphy did not. That was my introduction to them – they did not want any part of their fee going to make a better movie. Things like that don’t usually sit well with me.

Now that the movie is done I get strange questions from the press. Like “how did Tom control the set”? What? “ How did Tom and Don control you?” What the RRRR. “How was it working with Tom and Don who knew Transformers so well?” “We heard Tom wrote the story – he had a 90 page treatment, right?” Okay stop. Let me take you back in time. Tom and Don are very nice guys, but let’s get some facts straight.

Tom had one creative meeting with me for one hour and ten minutes to be exact about a year ago. He told he was the über fan boy and was going to protect me from the minefields. The type of minefields on the Net like “Damn you Michael Bay” “You wrecked my childhood Michael Bay” and other various web death threats I received. Tom proceeded to tell me how much he had problems with the robot designs and script issues. I realized he was worlds apart in my vision. I said thank you very much, and then showed him my office door - I never really spoke to him again other then to mutter hello. He would occasionally come to the set with guests like it was some theme park. I never spoke creatively with Don. I read his notes kind of trashing the script and making me and the writers feel like a big shit pile. But during production Don was nice to me, he knew I was not going to talk creative with him.

One day not too long ago, the writers of our movie Alex and Bob called me in a panic saying all of a sudden after the movie was almost finished in post that Tom was applying for writer's or story credit. I was appalled because neither the writer’s nor I ever saw any treatment. Well, he applied for credit, but the Writer’s Guild shot him down, denied him.

But what made my blood curl was something that was on the Net with Tom at the Saturn awards on IESB where they interviewed him about the movie – a movie I might add he had not seen yet. He acted very much like he did. Check it out as he vamps through the questions, and how Hugo put his “thumb print on it”. Give me a break the guy was lying through his teeth - he had seen nada, nothing until the press screening.

So that’s the real truth, I had to say it, cause I'm tired of answering these questions.

What these guys did do was stuck with a ‘silly toy movie’ and pushed it around town and kept the faith after everyone turned them down, always with the hope that maybe someone somewhere would make it. Now I commend them on that. Hats off to them, but trying to taking creative credit in the press let me just say it – irks me. Too many credits are given to too many people who had nothing to do with the movie. Hell even investment bankers with not the slightest idea of how to make a movie all of a sudden are big producers in town.

I guess that’s how it goes in Hollywood.

Bay

Murphy and DeSanto pwned lol, etc. Might this rule him out of a sequel, though?

Transformers Crosses $100 million!

In just four and a half days, Michael Bay's Transformers has crossed the $100 million mark, adding an additional $22.4 million on Friday to put it ahead of the established Pixar film Ratatouille and Bruce Willis action sequel Live Free or Die Hard in terms of box office gross. Its first Friday is pointing to a three-day weekend in the range of $62 to 65 million.

Watched it on IMAX this weekend,

I can honestly say me and the three others who watched thought it was terrible. Ive never walked out on a film but this came very close. If it wasnt for the others I was with I would have I think.

What was the point of the girl in the movie?

Why all the close up spinning around shots of the robots? I could not even work out what was going on, who was hitting who.

Soo many stupid things in the plot to make it a complete joke, and why could they not fly?

Also the biggest piss take was why Megatron could not turn into a gun?

Also the whole Section7 thing BOOOOORING.. It seemed worse that ID4 and thats saying something.

You sound like a Transformers geek boy to me. Correct me if I'm wrong. What I'm not wrong about is the fact that this Transformers film wasn't made for you. I'm sorry to have to break it to you. I mean you no harm. It was made to bring average cinema goers into a theatre and take money off of them.

That means human interest plots (girl) and jokes (comedy). It was classic Bay.

99% of the people who see this film won't even know that Megatron can turn into a gun. In fact in the context of the film it wouldn't of worked.

Be glad that at the end of it they will all think - just like I did - that the Autobots are cool and Optimus Prime is ace.
