Final Fantasy VIII

I thought the ending to FFVIII was very dissapointing, especially compared to the action and lovliness of FFVII's. I guess the whole love story thing didn't do it for me at all, and although the Camcorder bits were nice, the whole FMV was just, well, damned boring.

Ultimecia was a huge pain in the arse. But the music and atmosphere when fighting her is fantastic, especially in her last form. Its a big shame though that you have to endure such a huge long slog, the time it takes to fight her is ridiculious. And also having to watch massive long animations of the enemy attacks is bullshit too - if I ever have to see that planet attack thingy again I'll smash the screen.

I enjoyed FFVIII for what it's worth, and certainly don't think it warrants the scrutiny it comes under. Frankly, the idea that any FF game released on PSX is significantly better or worse than FFVII is ludicruous, as despite characters, story and setting changing, it's the same ol' square and the same game system (round abouts - you know what I mean).

I never completed it though. It's what I hate about FF games, they just require far too much of your time, thus prone to becoming a chore. Still, horses for courses and all that.

Ultimecia doesn't take that long if you have lionheart limit break and plenty of Aura magic.

In fact it takes about 20 minutes, I'd imagine some of you lot might think it's cheap though.

Oh yeah, I remember I did that and it was pretty easy. 'Aura' is bloody handy .

Thinking hard I reckon the very first time I completed FFVIII the final battle took about 2 hours but after that I always used 'Aura' - it's fantastic.

I just started this again and im about 20 hours in. Last time i played it i got the castle at the end where you lose everything and got my ass well and truly raped cos squall was on a higher level than everyone else about 15 higher if i recall. so this time im trying to level everything out properly between characters.

I finished off Ultimecia in about 45 monites the first time I fought her, which curiously enough was almost the same amount of time it took me to beat Sephiroth the first time too.

The musical accompaniment to the four sections of the Ultimecia fight is among the very best work Uematsu has done, I reckon. I love 'The Extreme' in particular.

:D by the time i got to Ultimecia i was so hacked off with the whole thing i gave up. Having loves VII i looked forward to VIII so much. And what we got was sum irratating bloke walking around like Kevin the Teenager. "I supppose i'll save the world then duurrrr"

I really lost interest at the point matey gunner bloke was supposed to shot the queen, a job he trained extensively for and one i had leveled him up for, and then he goes all FMV and bottles it. It was all rather tedious after that. :D

Oh ... and that stupid card card .. WTF i just lost everything everytime. stupid :D

IX was much better

Triple Triad was a work of art. I often loaded up the game just to play that for a couple of hours. The card game in IX was utter bollocks in comparison.

I've found that PSXmc program. I put in a FF9 disk, to test it, I selected the CD, clicked "open", or whatever, I found an STR file (the one you're supposed to look for), clicked it, and the program just froze.

Anyone know how to work it? I'd fucking really love to get this working, as there are some great FMV sequences I'd love to have from loads of different games.

OH HANG ON WE ALL GREW UP TOGETHER

minor gripe

That's final fantasy 7.

EDIT: I get the feeling that this is something you're already aware of.

It's Final Fantasy VIII as well. It's an odd twist but it does come into the plot a bit after it's been introduced. What I don't like is how Edea had a lot of character when she was the bad guy then is boring as hell once she's in the party.

FF9 card game was indeed bollocks. Once you starting thinking ahead in Triple Triad it got really interesting.

In fact, I reckon they could've released it as a stand-alone CCG.

They did release the cards as full sets. I came sooooo close to buying a set off ebay a couple of years ago, but it would have been pointless because of course no-one else I knew would have had any. Plus, the set was going for about £120.

Click 'Movie and Audio' then 'Open and analyze CD ROM', then choose the 'STR Stream' option and let the disc be read. After a while you should have a list of all the FMVs on the disc. Just click on any of them to get a preview in the right-hand window. From there you can play them as if you were using quicktime or whatever.

Under the 'Conversion' tab above the window you can (obviously) convert them to avis to save on your hard drive.

The only thing about it is, sometimes the sound will be wrong because you obviously don't get the chip-generated parts of the music from these scenes, just that which is embedded in the FMV. This affects certainly the ending of FFVIII and a couple of other little bits here and there.

If it's simply crashing when you try to analyze the disc I really don't know what the problem could be, sorry!
