I've been playing this for a while now and - erm - much like Orta I'm starting to fall into the "it's not very good is it?" camp??

RPG elements seem pants - equipment and spells are - erm - pants - graphics are lovely of course - story is pleasantly weird - difficulty curve is all over the fcuking place - movement is too 'in treacle' for my tastes...

No level took me more than 2-3 attempts tho - upto the centipede - which I must have failed on 30 times now!! Do developers actually pay anyone to test this sh1t or is it just a matter of hoping reviewers don't play far enough into the game exactly?

Oh - that levels 'random 1-hit-kill lightning' is an outstanding example of how to ensure no-one buys your games ever-again innit? What sort of an idiot puts something like that into a game - I've died twice from what I ASSUME was lightning - but as I didn't see it it could just have been some strange Japanese curse I suppose...

That said - I've uttered a few curses of my own - my latest being "you're off to eBay mate..."

JP

p.s. It's OK really tho - I have Dynasty Warriors 4 here - a GOOD destruction/mass war simulator

I think that is where the RPG element comes in. You need to equip something for that level that will negate (or at least reduce) the effect of lightening. I had this problem on a level with fire until I equip a different amulet (I think) and then it was a breeze. I am currently stuck on a level where I'm being fired at with black smoky things and they totally annihalate me so I'm going to have to work out what I need to buy I think.

Additionally the centiped isn't really that hard you just have to work out how to kill it. And it most definetly didn't get a 9.

I really like it but there we go.

Otogi was designed by sadists.

Levelling up in an action game - evil

An escort mission where your attacks damage the small glowing turd you are supposed to protect - evil

Levels that can only be finished by guessing whatever arbitary task the designers want you to perform - evil

Attacks that poison you causing continuous health loss - fucking insanely evil

Repeated speech samples that sound stupid booming out the speakers again and again - argh!

Final boss - I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.

On the other hand you keep playing because:

300 hit combos - mint

Insane mid-air fighting - mint

Destructable sceneary - mint

Boss fights where you get knocked all over the place, smashing through scenery, get your arse kicked and still win in the end - mint

Beautiful graphics, beautiful sound (except for the speech), crazy level desgin (blessing and a curse)...

Aaaargh don't remind me of that son of a bitch! I almost quit the game at that point, I had to turn off the sound to complete the level or I would've gone insane. What a stupid stupid decision by the designers. I got about half way through before I lost my savegames when I sent my Xbox in for repairs. I don't think I'll ever play it again. At the end of the day it's just not very good and compared to the divine Ninja Gaiden it's simply a waste of time.

SHALL NOT PASS!

Oh please, don't. That was one of the single most irritating sections of a game I've played.

I think it's actually "None shall pass" - not being pedantic, I just spent so long on that area that I don't think I'll ever forget it. Awful game.

Ah you're right it was 'None shall pass'. I think I'll destroy the disc when I get home tonight.

Did you ever clear that section? I gave up there after listening to that speech sample over and over again, the first part of the level where you're running up the hill dodging rocks and fireballs was frustrating enough, but to be faced with that nasty platform section with the world's worst camera for company directly afterwards was just too much.

I found Otgi very easy, I breezed straight through it without too much trouble at all  And bear in mind that I gave up on Ninja Gaiden due to it's difficulty. In fact the only bit that annoyed me was setting myself on fire on the early levels by accidently getting to close to a flame.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that.

Being able to set yourself on fire by accidentally standing too close to torches - EVIL.

..

As for finding it easy!? Really? I really had trouble with it, especially the levels where you could be knocked about by ranged attacks and spend a whole 30 seconds without any control of your character just watching your health being whittled down to zero.

I found it was a lot more fun replaying with my levelled up character just to kick the shit out all the enemies that had frustrated me so much first time through.

When all's said and done, I was an idiot for perservering with it, it was more frustrating then fun.

The sequel isn't much better, though it is more refined. The graphics are ace and to begin with it is quite a pleasing experience...but it gets amazingly frustrating when the difficulty increases.

There is one level where you must protect a bridge from loads of incoming boats, and the only way to destroy them is to hit a large 'gong' on the middle of the deck. Unfortunately there are enemies everywhere and it's almost impossible to control the camera in order to hit the target.

The most stupid thing about Otogi is the two different options for locking on - one allows you to target each specific enemy but doesn't let you do much else, and the other gives you free-form control but can't cycle through locked on enemies (maybe wrong...been ages since I played it). Why not give the player best of both worlds? It's weird design.

I gave up on Otogi when I reached some sort of Ice boss, I just couldn't be bothered to fight a boss, while fighting the wind, the controls and the camera at the same time - especially as a single mistake takes you back to the end. Wrong wrong wrong.

Looks nice though.

:D - Guess where I left Otogi out to dry?

"None shall pass! None shall pass... (in weird 'I'm cumming' voice')"

Otogi is a bitch. It's far too difficult, nowhere near rewarding enough and just felt soulless (IMO!!!11). Graphically it ranges from the best seen this generation (still) to tired and generic - I think it's more about the level structure/layout than the graphics tbh.

None shall fucking pass....how the hell are you supposed to beat that area anyway? I'd love to give the game another chance, but I really, really need to get past that area in order to do so.

You have to play through the first two or three levels over and over till you've levelled up. :D

You're fucking kidding me.

I mean really, you are fucking kidding me? Right?

Jesus. I thought I was just shit or something. I was disappointed and I only paid £15 for it.

"None shall pass." Hit by *something*. Falls down what might be a hole, maybe...

I thought it was down to my lack of skill too, I mean where does it say that you need to keep repeating the first three levels to progress? Occasionally I go back to it to see what the next levels are like but that "none shall pass" bit always drives me insane. I paid £40 for the fucking thing as well.

That's how I did it. It never mentions the levelling up process (or anything about the magic system or item buying) anywhere in the game, but I'm convinced it's nearly impossible to get anywhere without replaying earlier levels.

There are some jawdroppingly awesome moments later on in the game, but similarly irritating bits as well.

You are kidding I hope. That level is easy. Just dodge the stuff coming at ya, and destroy every building and pick up the powerups. The enemies are well easy to kill with a quick hard attack, and the thing of falling off stuff is negated by pressing the right trigger at the same time as the attack button. This makes you do a air jump attack with ya sword that allows you to gain height. The right trigger on its own does an air dash, which can be used as much as ya want, or untill the magic meter runs out.

No reason for falling off other than if ya magics all gone really.

I find Otogi great, absolutely great. Once you 'understand' the mechanics there is nothing like it. The game forces you to use the right weapons and magic and create mass destrucction. One of the 3 Xbox must-haves if you ask me. ;)

How about the whole presentation. Music, sound effects, design of the world, character names, visual effects. A gem! :(
