Shoot-me-do's

Now then, I do like a spot of scrolling shoot-me-do action now and again, so I was wondering what everyone at rllmuk thought of the genre, and specific titles within said genre, y'know favourites and why stuff. This thread is also a plea, yes, a plea to everyone about what "d shoot-em-up should I as a player get if I wanted to partake in such action?

Ive got:

Ikaruga on GC,

R-Type Final on PS2,

Metal Slug X on PSone,

Shikigami No Shiro II on GC.

Sadly though i dont think there is much more out there in PAL form (PS2 and Xbox) or on Gamecube.

Dependant on whether or not I get a paying job in a couple of weeks I may splash out on a Japanese PS2.

So....

Suggestions?

Discussion?

Both please.

A 'schmup'?

Get Gradius V for the PS2, reports say it's 'ace'. Similar reports suggest that ESPGaluda is also 'worth checking out'.

There was a similar thread to this a few weeks ago- it's worth searching for that and reading it over for recommendations. Download MAME for your PC, there are tons of quality shmups available for that. DoDonPachi is my favourite.

Not heard of this one before. I see its ST-V and Saturn, and is listed as working in MAME. Being ST_V is it too much to hope for that it might work on Xbox MAME?

This is cheap and probably the best port available (even over the Saturn), though the new 3D Shienryu is a wee bit pants.

Well I'm PAL PS2 only, but another Google reveals that Midas Interactive are bringing what appears to be that game out over here in October as Steel Dragon Ex. There's some talk of 2D and 3D modes (Steel Dragon and Steel Dragon Evolution) so its not clear if it includes the good version and the pants version, or just the pants version. When I get a moment I might nip over to NTSC to see if they know more.

It's the same game as "The Shooting: Double Shienryu" apparently.

Indeed, it contains both the original Shienryu (the one that was ported to the Saturn and costs a minor mint now) and the new 3D "update" (which is fairly pants). Cracking bargain though.

Space Tripper on the PC! Now only £1.98 from Game's website! See Bargains forum for more details!

I'm sorry. I like Space Tripper. And I'm also imagining that you're posting this from a PC.. if you're on a Mac, my point's kinda null and void. But anyways.

You need Psyvariar on PS2. I picked it up for £6 last week and it's by far one of my most played games at the moment.

Being a strictly PAL gamer (though not entirely out of choice), there isn't a great deal to get. I've got Ikaruga and I fancy getting R-TYPE final, but playing the latter on a demo pod was horrendous - seemed very slow, possibly a symptom of crappy PAL conversion.

Has anyone got any PAL recommendations besides Ika, Psyvariar and R-TYPE? I'm slowly becoming quite fond of shoot em ups again :)

I would wholly recomend R-Type Final. Yes it is slow but control wise the ship can be sped up, but level wise its quite long. For example when comparingit to Ikaruga, Ikaruga's levels are generally 5-6 minute bouts of absolute balletic chaos, wheras R-TF's can become massively time-consuming such as the 3rd level fighting around a giant carrier craft, that level takes about 30 minutes of what Ive seen of it i.e. I havent finished that level. So it can be long.

And its only a tenner in Play.com's Summer sale.

Lying twat...ok, it is there, but I can't get it till next friday.Buy Psyvariar...

If it's gone by then, then you alone are responsible for me being bitterly disappointed at missing out on thisBuy Psyvariar...

. Strip me of my ignorance, would you? :)

But yeah, it's one of those games I will be picking up. I'm relieved to see that the speed doesn't hamper the game too muchBuy Psyvariar...

and, based on your recommendation, I reckon it's probably worth a tenner.

Buy Psyvariar...

If you look around for a bit you should be able to pick up a copy of The Raiden Project (which has the first 2 Raidens) for the PSone. 50Hz doesn't do it any favours but they're both still great games.

And freeware PC shmups obviously, of which there are many.

You really need to find yourself a copy of R-Type Delta...

When R-Type Final came out I remember there being a fair few folks who slated it saying it was shit compared to Delta. I put it down to the usual championing of obscure games over stuff that is readily available (the word casual probably got used a lot...).

But no! I got hold of R-type Delta a few weeks back and it's bloody amazing. Better then R-Type Final, which I loved.

If you really love shooters and lot of money.

Get a chipped XBOX for mame with load of roms. (Have a word with Yod@)

get a Dreamcast capable of playing Japanese games

get a Japanese Sega Saturn

get a chipped/Japanese PS2

and get SC Arcade stick for Gamecube and PS2 (and magic box for XBOX)

and Sega Arcade Stick for Dreamcast

and one for Saturn (No idea on it quality)

Then you got a choice of 50 top notch shooters.

I like shoot them up as it is easy to pick up and fun to play but hard to master.
