Fallout 3

.::: The makers of Morrowind do Fallout? (O_O) <-- not a positive emoticon

Why does the fact that Bethesda made Morrowind have anything to do with what the quality of Fallout 3 might be?

Bethesda has done great games during the last 12 years, not just Morrowind. And even if you lot didn't like Morrowind, Fallout 3 might still be great. Capcom, for instance, made two great Zelda games for the GBC. Retro games made Metroid prime....outsiders can do a good job, sometimes better than their forefathers as they have more to prove and more to lose if done badly.

I am looking forward to what Bethesda can do with their new license.

Started playing Fallout 2 again this week, only played about 5 hours of it before, but that was on the old comp.

I'd recommend it to anyone on the forum, it's really, really good.

Yes, yes it is.

I assume it's something to do with Bethesda games not including dialogue and that Fallout is based almost entirely upon it.

And combat was so shit.

Bethesda have already stated that they'll be basing Fallout on their new engine technology used in the forthcoming Eldar Scrolls game, so the isometric view that Fallout fans know and love is totally dead from this point on.

You can add turn-based combat to the list of fatalities too.

In short, much of what makes Fallout...well...Fallout is being stripped away and Bethesda would need immense skill and intricate understanding of the universe surrounding Fallout to make the transition a worthwhile one.

Perhaps the blanket skeptisism is starting to come into focus now, for those who are wondering what all the fuss is about.

Well....

- Their code was still full of bugs after several patches

- Their rulesets were full of loopholes, the stats were wildly unbalanced

- The Mod community came up with better models within a couple of months than their own artists managed in a couple of years

- The scripting was typically florid, overwritten gaming fare

And this comes from someone with a fair amount of time for the game. So they're not an outfit whose past technical proficiency and capacity for meeting deadlines would have scored them the job.

I think this is far more obviously to do with buying into a brand, as Morrowind's immense sales have blessed Bethesda with an RPG developer profile to rival Bioware's. As respected as it is, I don't think Fallout is anywhere near as well known and the reputation will have faded further by the time this arrives. I wouldn't be surprised if the box says "Fallout 3 -- from the makers of Morrowind".

So, while I applaud your support for giving outsiders a chance, I don't think that's the case here at all. On the contrary, it sounds as if the publisher turned down the bids from lesser-known prospectives and went for what seemed a safer name based purely on sales.

Talking of which -- Interplay? Aren't they dead yet?

.::: You mentioned pretty much EVERYTHING I expected to go wrong with Bethesda taking over the license...

Crap, hundreds of samey looking characters, all 'talking' with the same texts, giving the same responses in a dreadfully coloured world (Fallout isn't exactly the most cheerful setting around, but even the previous ones looked like a caranval with pretty lights compared to Morrowind).

Don't get me wonrg, I actually like Morrowind for what it is. It would however be the last thing on earth I'd combine Fallout with. Even that recently released hack & slash seems a more viable option now....

  • 3 years later...

This looks to be shaping up.

Some great artwork on the official site here.

The environments have apparently been made with much influence from Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road', which would make for a pretty spectacular place to be. Bit of a fan of things post-apocalyptic, me.

I don't know anything about the series though, were the first two installments decent games?

edit: just saw that the last post here was in 2004? is there another thread?

There was a more recent one, yeah. Lovely site, I don't spend that much time playing games anymore but I'm properly excited for this.

It looks stunning.

I read that it's a First Person RPG.

Er... what would that be then? Is Oblivion the same?
