Most Difficult Moment Ever

No way, the dancing in San Andreas is piss easy! How on earth could you not do it?!

Everyone says that! I think it was the moment when I finally realised that despite my love of videogames I'm actually not very good at them. Actually I'm OK but I can never seem do rytham action bits. Like when you are about to kill a boss in god of war. Can't do it.

Some things on Conker's Bad Fur Day were amazingly difficult, but I feel that was more out of the way it was made than how it was intended. Things like, not knowing that holding Z made your piss go further. It took me ages of trying before I had to internet the answer.

Oh man! I did that as well! I thought it was unspeakably difficult, but I eventually managed to get past the little firey bastards. I don't think I even realised the piss thing till I saw a mate play afterward, I had just told him the section was murderous too. Fucker.

Coming to accept I'd got to the final boss in Code Veronica without the ammo to defeat it ;)

A few bits in FarCry too before it finally broke me near the end, might've been Volcano, I can't really remember. I stink at FPSs and was thrilled to have gotten so far, just couldn't take it any more.

Sagat and Vega (M. Bison in EU/US) from StreetFighter II handed my arse back to me on a plate many times back in the day when the game first came out.

Perhaps something to do with the game being so innovative and special for its time. Gamer preconceptions went out the window - learning SFII really was like learning a martial art. Now the bosses are easy.

Funnily I noticed a similar thing with ResEvil4 - when I was first playing, I kept dying in the first village at the hands of Chainsaw Guy over and over. I was playing the game more like previous RevEvils, until I learned and adjusted my tactics and can now dispatch Ganados with grand stylee.

Massive waves of delight and satisfaction with both games.

Cheers Capcom - long may you give cool, innovative blockbusters!

More recently, I found BG&E very tricky in places - well, in the infiltration bits really. If it's not a laser cannon on the ceiling that instantly kills you as soon as an Alpha Section spots you (you can be well hidden behind something and it'll still get you), it's the Alpha Sections themselves: once they've spotted you, I've found that you either have a tiny window of opportunity to attack when they raise their hammer (as their shield is lowered), or you have to dodge away from a hammer blow with "X" (I found this very tricky) and then hit them when their guard is down. And they have those bloody long-range explosive attacks. However, the payoff was the immense satisfaction I got from sneaking past them un-noticed after dozens of attempts.

the dancing thing got a friend of mine too.  i got it 2nd attempt - can't see how it can possibly be hard, unless they tweaked it on the xbox version.

lots seem to struggle with it, everyone else doesn't at all.

its not overly easy, well I think thats just me I can only half remember the names of relation of the symbols to thier positions on that pad the only ones I know for sure are triangle/x and sometimes circle but square always makes me look for some reason. Think I'm still used to a/b/c.

However the game is pretty generous so even if your alright for the first half and fuck up a load of the song it still lets you pass

I think it was the third from last mission in Tie Fighter's extended campaign - just you defending a weak frigate type thing against squadrons of A-Wings which are bastard hard to take down.  They spawned all over the map and it was utterly impossible to kill them with enough time to trek over to the next lot before they launched their missiles.

I think the key to the hard X-wing game missions always lay in the power management of your craft (obviously you had to be good at flying too). Missions where you had to protect craft often meant that you had to put all power to your engines just to get near enemies before they could launch their torpedoes. However, fractionally before you came into range you needed to start building up your sheilds and lasers. My memory is hazy, but I think I remember that some missions were almost impossible unless you had a friend playing 'co-pilot' doing the power management for you, while you concentrated on not getting killed and dishing out death.

The later mission in X-Wing also pitted you against opponents in superior ships, which made things extra hard.

God I used to love those games, the Rogue series are a sack of shit in comparison.

This guy in Armored Core 2 Another Age...

nineballseraph_small.jpg

It took me almost a month to beat him, trying several times a day. Went back recently to play him though, obliterated him on my first go. Weird.

What really got to me though was that the original Armored Core Master of Arena version was a complete doddle to take out. The Another Age variant is probably the toughest boss I've ever faced in a game (or was at least).

Blast Corps platinum time trials fucked me off to buggery.

No matter how hard I try, I simply can't get my voice to do any of the bits on Love Machine in Singstar Popworld.

But trying to get 3000 plus on Smartbomb on Frequency very nearly got me commited. Particulary as Plums managed to do it months (and about a hundred hours playtime) before I did.

You sir, are a fuck jar.

Finally managing to do it rates as one of my greatest achievements. Funnily enough, it's also one of the achievements my parents are least proud of.

Me too. What I would give for the feeling that I used to have playing Xwing ten years ago or whatever it was - I could replay the same missions over and over again just messing around and pretending I was a rebel pilot. The controls were just perfect.

You got through it by using that fire blast from the spear then?

yeah, apart from the troops next to the dynamite: turn em to stone and then blow up the barrels

basically the great thing about the spear power up is that even when the soldiers hit you they still catch on fire ( it builds up the rage move double quick)

also the bow and arrow is handy with the double-bladed assasins:up close you can take one down with the multi-shot ( you have to time it right tho')

aside: i really think creative assembly mis-judged the difficulty spike on this level in a major way, the rest of the game is a relative breeze compared to the above

also theres no option to re-start the level....something i found out to my cost, and handfuls of hair

There was a bit in Donkey Kong 64 where you had to shoot coconuts through a spinning propeller. Could I do it? Could I fuck! I tried about a billion times.

And I'm not terrible at games, Viewtiful Joe gave me no problems and I fucked Mizer's face off at the end of Jet Force Gemini.

Donkey Kong Country 2 had the hardest level out of all the Donkey Kong's ever released.

It was in the secret zone and was set in the jungle, and featured those annoying barrels that crept along the wires in an attempt to blow you up. Getting the DK coin and the bonus barrels on that level was an absolute nightmare, and then actually finishing the thing itself was even harder. Anyone remember that one? I can't remember much more about it, otherwise I'd add it to my 'list' on the first page of this topic.

I remember being young and renting Earthworm Jim. And not being able to get past the level underwater. It was the hardest thing ever.

That was impossible. I did hear of one person who did it, though I tried millions of times and I can't see how it's physically possible, the shots take too long to get to the targets and when the propellor is spinning you can't get the targets. Even with the fastest and most perfectly aimed targetting it doesn't work! I got every banana in the game except for that fucker.

The section shortly before the final boss on Viewtiful Joe where you have to fight your way through a series of rooms filled with progressively harder enemies, and there's a timer, and when the timer runs out the room fills with poison gas which damages you every few seconds and breaks your combo and then you gouge a big chunk out of your controller with your teeth and weep. :)
