The Super Licence on GT3. It eventually reached the point where i bought an Action Replay cart so I could get the licence without having to beat the impossible lap times.

Saying that, I remember the final licances in GT1 and GT2 being impossible, but managed to do all of them in one night last week.

Chase Ace 2 The last few levels were epic. Although that's slowly being outstaged by the game N which is the hardest... game... ever... I think only 17 people in the world have actually completed it.

Those games are hard, but they are fair, you can do it with a bit of patience. But there are games that are just plain unbalanced which really puts me off. I want a challenge, not an impossible game.

Goddamn, I forgot about the Water Temple. That thing fucked with my mind... until I sat down with a walk through on my lap.

I beat the shark thingy in Viewtiful Joe, and now I can't actually work out what I'm supposed to do in the next section... <_<

Games can be a cruel mistress.

I spent about a week trying to suss out the Water Temple, before I just gave up and got a walkthrough.

Last level in Driver was a fucking pain, but I did it eventually, through complete luck (and glitching through a wall :( ).

People thought the water temple was hard? I did it first time, no trouble took me about two hours to do the whole temple. How odd...I thought it was one of the easier temples. <_<

oh and Panzer Dragoon orta for me- I just can't do it. Level 4 I'm stuck on at the moment...on easy. <_<

That fecking secret star road level on SMW where you had to float through the entire thing.

Avoiding all those bastard baseballs and fire flowers. <_<

For some reason the GBA version was far easier and I got it on my first go.

I can think of several:

Getting the Master levels on Super Monkey Ball.

Doing all the Challenges on Super Smash Bros. Melee

Unlocking all the cheats on Perfect Dark the 'proper' way and doing all the challenges etc.

Completing Ikaruga in 1-credit.

I'm sure Perfect Dark was the toughest out of those. Some of those times you had to finish levels in were just so so so tight. And the levels were longer (and more difficult) than Goldeneye.

As mentioned, Metal Gear is really hard as is Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. I started to play Onimusha today but realised I was at the water puzzle and the reason I stopped playing it becomes oh so clear, even with a walkthrough to that one puzzle I am still stumped!.

I thought Demon Gate on FFVII was really hard, took me too many times to beat it. The licenses on GT (original) were not all that bad compared to the ones in GT2 and GT3. And I also think Gun Valkyrie is rather hard.

Which one is that again? I have played through FFVII completely several times but I can't think which one it is. The big robot which you have to kill when you return to Midgar (The one that pops up again at the battle arena)?

You sissies quit yer cryin on (XBox) Ninja Gaiden. I remember when I was wee, I had the Nintendo Power Guide to Ninja Gaiden 2 and I sweat my way through the whole game, throwing controlers here and there, and in the later levels I tell you boy I ripped a lot of pages out of that NP Guide and tore them right the fuck up.

Now here is a proper thing to be saying in this thread: "Getting through level __ in Zanac". Start with level 1, aye.

Difficulty is different from bad controls and frustrating trial-and-error, so I can't say Fear Effect, can I?

One of the only times I ever found myself strategically challenged in an RPG was against the optional underwater and desert Weapons in FF7. I really had to work out a party/materia system that would keep me alive through those 9999 attacks, you know? It was a very rare kind of workout in that sort of game.

I too have not beaten the last stage of Advance Wars.

Man, I remember Zelda 2 being hard. Was I wrong?

pfft, who is the sissy that needed a guide eh?

I've beaten FFVII a few times and Demon Gate hardly bothers me, back then (FFVII launch) I was an RPG virgin and so was new to the idea of levelling up and upgrading weapons and such so got as far as Demon Gate and kept dying. Restarted the game from scratch, levelled up more, tried again and beat it first time.

It is the boss you fight at the Temple of the Ancients. I think I will install FFVII on my PC shortly and settle the score once again.

Heh. It didn't work, anyway. But really, a game that can make you rip up your strategy guide in fits of anger? Well.

Final Fantasy almost made me do that. I was playing it for a month straight when someone copied over my game so i had to start again. Got the guide cos I thought it would make the game quicker and 5 months later I finally finished it.

That is indeed the popular consensus. I agree with you though - I managed it first time through, and didn't really find the puzzles all that tough. What I did find tricky was that damn mid-boss, it seemed to take forever for me to even get a single hit on him.

There's only a few games I can remember playing that made me really want to get through the hard bits. One of them was Banjo Kazooie. The last fight against Grunty was (for me at the time) a fucking nightmare. I couldn't work out what to do with the Jinjo Egg bit, so I'd run around without a fucking clue and get smashed at some point or another. Luigi's Mansion's last boss had me scratching my head too; felt so stupid when I realised how to beat it.

Hardest game I've ever played? Everything sort of descends into a retro haze so it's hard to be objective, but Green Beret on C64 was a real motherfucker. You'd die extremely quickly. Grr.

It's the gate that was also a demon, funnily enough. A big wall/ door with arms and a head.

had a game on the master system called Ghost castle .....

Ghost House. Yeah, but that was only hard because they'd put the jump & attack buttons in the wrong order. Oh, and I got to level 3 :o

Hardest game Ive finished was Bart Vs. Space Mutants on the megadrive. Only ever finished it twice. The museum level is insanely difficult with the moving blocks.

Been stuck on some final bosses for some time now: Lost Kingdoms & Bangai-O.

Level four on Gitaroo Man. Seriously, I've been trying to do that since the EDGE forum was up and running, and I simply cannot do it. The only level to make me cry real tears.

I hate you Gitaroo Man.

Thats uncanny... :o

I just gave up on both them after a while.

Lost Kingdoms takes the piss. Even after hours of levelling up on the final level, converting cards into more powerful cards etc. I just couldn't beat it. Shame too as I really enjoyed the rest of the game.

Otogi was an absolute bastard too. The "glowing turd" escort mission in which you could accidently kill the turd. And the final boss. ARGH!

There are really hard moments that I've got through and others that i haven't. I found, like a lot of you guys did, the last level i nthe original Driver insanely hard. But there was another level a few before that which seemed overlong, so you had to do *something* and reach a goal at which point you were all smashed up, only to find it wanted you to continue on somewhere else. That one took almost as long.

I played the last mission in GTA3 over and over again before I got that one, real trial and error gaming that one, but I remember using strange AI errors in some of them. i.e stand here and two of the guards jump over the wall to their deaths to try and get you.

Super Monkey Ball. Forget Expert mode, I just accept master mode will not be mine, so after many attempts to Advanced mode and getting to the extra levels I found the last extra level in that insanely hard. i just couldn't find a pattern to get through - it took literally hours - but I knew I couldn't turn the cube off else I'd have to get throgh advanced and the other extra levels all over again !

Things I seem to have got stuck on/given up. The final showdown with Gruntilda in Banjo Kazooie. Got really close - but I get annoyed that it takes so long to retry. The final race in Diddy Kong Racing. The final Boss in Perfect Dark - I spent ages not knowing how to do it - now i do know how, I can't be arsed to go back again... thanks Rare for those most annoying bosses.

But more recently - Veitiful Joe, didn't play for a while and came back to it. Can't seem to get past a tank. Fzero GX - can't get past the 3rd level in sotry mode. Skies of Arcadia on the DC - Get past the first Giga but instantly wiped out by the ship
