Most Difficult Moment Ever

One of the later missions in X-Wing.

The Redemption Scenario in X-wing, on the original floppy version (as oppsed to the CD remake). I think it was the second mission of tour of duty 2. It was toned down in the later version as it was too hard, but I finished it before that.

Incidentally, it's re-enacted in the first chapter of the book "X-Wing" by Michael Stackpole - but he's probably never played it, as the method his characters use doesn't work

Ghosts and Goblins. Impossible. I dont know how Todd from Neighbours managed to complete it. Actually I think Paul Robison kept giving him money.

Dude, he was like, totally addicted. You're right - he broke his addiction by beating the game thanks to Paul Robinson's fat wallet. I seem to recall that he had his top score beaten within days by some other kid, which pissed him off and sent him on another spiral into the seedy world of arcade gaming.

This means that Erinsborough had not one, but TWO G&G masters.

Weird town.

I remember actually being quite excited just to see what the end boss on G & G looked like seeing as I didnt know any corrupt businessmen able to fund me.

They are big gamers in Erinsborough though: I remember the Kennedys playing a lot of Magic Carpet, and the House of Trouser used to have a Playstation.

Sorry.

I spent a while getting all the Challenge medals in Perfect Dark's multiplayer as well. I wanted to get all the medals for one, two, three and four players, but because my friends weren't good enough to do them I just plugged in four controllers and then hid the other three players in the first couple of minutes before using my player to beat the challenge. That was very difficult, I can tell you.

 ...David Heath, I salute you!

Geese Howards super finish move.

Oh fuck after 10 years of paying my dues I can do it!

Deadly Rave Neo? Nice.

Other Joe, Fire Leo in VJ (Normal). Never did Leo. He jusy got stupidly fast at the end.

Kyoryu - Last Blade 2 - Level 8. Fucking CUNT has a cheap strike that strips a quart of your energy and uses it in very quick succession.

Krizalid - KOF 99 - Level 8. Just a cunt.

In fact, any boss from any fighter on level 8. The only non-cheeser is Demon Hyo from Rival Schools 2. IMO

I hope I'm not the only one who found the following tough...

Starfox Adventures. Now wait a minute - the entire rest of the game is piss easy, an absolute cake-walk. Then it shoves in one of the most sharp difficulty spikes I've ever seen in comparison with the rest of the game. Yep, I'm talking about the missile-shooting section atop the apatosaur. Took me about 30 goes. Fucking rock.

The last level in Ouendan is nigh-on impossible, but I just about managed it.

Fire Leo. My most-attempted bit in any game ever. 39 goes it took me.

Pit of 100 Trials in Paper Mario 2. Only took me two goes, but it was long, hard work.

Things which got the better of me:

Last level in Advance Wars. Looks like a few have found this to be unnecessarily tough too, which is reassuring.

F-Zero GX - can't remember the name of it, but I think it's the second or third track in the third cup. Almost every time on the last lap, where the track semi-inverts and ends up being quite narrow, I'd get bumped up and over the side of the track. Supremely annoying.

Cannon Fodder 2. Stupidly hard and a shame, cos I adored the original.

Also on the Amiga, Team 17's Project X. Ridiculously difficult.

Having completed JSRF last night, I'm ashamed to say that I found a lot of the jumps to graffiti areas quite difficult and frustrating at times...

Oh and level 4 of Mushmeshema where you just look at the bullets and laugh like a spaz because thats all you can do.

 I do that with so many shoot 'em ups. Either that or just shake my head...

I do hope you're joking Sean, the entire game can be completed from start to finish in under an hour, and Easy mode makes it complete piss.

I've been playing it in 10 minute bursts over 3 days , when I've gone into the garden to smoke. GOT to the castle pretty quick, it's just the various combination that's doing my head in...

Any Tony Hawks - My brain wont let me control these

Ikaruga - I just panic and forget every pattern

Halo2 - For well over 6 months I've had my game saved on legendary at the final fight (with banshee in the room) and still cant fucking well finish it.

Viewtiful Joe - You knows it.

Monkey Ball 2 - Random 'luck' levels.

Blizzard RTS's:

The final level of Warcraft 3. Seemingly impossible, I tried so many times I resorted to Game Faqs and basically cheated to win (by flying a building around). I have no idea how you're supposed to do it normally.

One of the later levels in Starcraft: Brood Wars, where you are the Zerg in the centre of a space station, and about 4 bases surrounding you attack you constantly (both Humans and Protoss). I tried so many times it hurts, and I still can't do it 3 years later!

Last tough moment that I remember was one of the bosses in Xenosaga.

Took me like 4 attempts which took 1 hour each to kill him. He basically healed himself around the halfway mark to full health so you had to have lots of boosts (Boosts allow you to skip in front of a characters turn). So around the half way mark I basically kept boosting for like 30 minutes pulling off these big ass attacks that took him down big style.

I really want to play Xenosaga again :o

Well, I guess I'm talking as someone who's mastered it...I admit that it was very hard on my first play too; you really have to focus on timing and memorising the patterns...

I hope to GOD you're using rabbit ears though.

Firstly, you all have far too much patience. Trying 100+ times to beat a particular part of a game? F**k me. Life is far too short. Get out more you bloody minded, dish-eyed, pale skinned freaks! :o

Secondly, should we really have to have this kind of mandatory challenge in games? For crap gamers like myself there should always be an easy out.

Case in point, Viewtiful Joe. After about 10 attempts at the Rhino boss I gave up. Was loving it till that point. So back to the shop it went and no chance of me ever buying any other games in the series - their financial loss not mine. Same with Ninja Gaiden (but the first boss this time).

These challenges are easy for some of you (or difficult, but you're determined to put in a dozen hours to beat one section), but they are show stoppers for the casual like me. There are 10 times as many games out there than I will ever get to play, and many of them are probably great. So when I hit a brick wall more than a couple of times, I generally wander off to experience something new, and don't return to the franchise in question.

Games like King Kong, which supposedly has an adaptive difficulty curve, or easy options on all games (and not insanely hard 'easy' options like VJ) are the only viable way ahead for gaming IMO.

I absolutely agree. Im all in favour of difficulty levels or inbuilt challenges suitable for people who love a challenge but it shouldnt be at the expense of the average player. I want to see an end to all the games I buy, especially as I dont have so much time to play games as when I was a kid.

I think the perfect recent example is RE4 which apparently does have some amount of adaptive difficulty but anyway is very generous and completable to the average gamer. Perfect difficulty level.

Microsoft have hinted toward this with their own games (for instance PGR3 has absolutely no barriers to playing most of the cars in the game after data they'd gathered showed that the vast majority of players never got beyond the second chapter).

I noticed them suggesting something similar for 'Kameo' during its presentation - but quite how Rare are going to show restraint and not put IMPOSSIBLE sections into one of their games is beyond me.

On the other hand, if there are many more games that you'd rather play, then you should take back VJ, and play those. If a game is heavily plot-based, like Metal Gear etc, then I can understand your frustration, but a game like VJ or Ikaruga, for me, if it were easier would be pointless. Some of us won't complain, we prefer games like Devil May Cry 3 that give a challenge.

One mans "challenge" is another mans "impossible" though. The problems with games like Ikaruga, VJ or F-Zero GX is that their "easy" modes are not "easy". Fine have a hard as fuck mode in the game, but at least make the game accessable to all by implementing a proper easy mode.
