There are going to be two versions - one the normal cinema release, the other an unrated director's cut. The differences between the two versions are:

Hmmmm, not sure I approve of some of these changes, the change to the ending seems particularly ill thought out.

You knew Michael was going to kill himself but the fact that he didn't want Ana to see it really leant the ending some pathos, the way he drew the gun but just looked down at it was quite powerful. Suggestion always works far, far better in these dramatic moments, include that shot of him just blowing his brains out and it totally evaporates any of the tenderness he showed towards Ana - why would he want that to be her final memory of him?

As to the other changes, no big surprises. More gore, a few more conversations, I think I will buy the cut version simply because of the disagreeable change to the ending - although I am curious to see the unedited vers, worth a rent if it sees a R2 release.

Perhaps he shot himself when se was long gone? Or becasue shooting himself was a better option than being teared apart by zombies?

And besides, if you shoot yourself up through the chin, your brains will fly out! There's no getting away from it. If that's what happens, we shouldn't have it shielded from us for reasons of taste. If I wanted taste I'd go and watch a Merchant Ivory film

I also think it's a great film, but that doesn't mean that any extra scenes are automatically going to make it better.

Sometimes Directors Cuts are fantastic, other times they feel bloated and undisciplined, it's quite possible for one to make a great movie worse just as it could make a good movie great.

Most of the additions seem to be more gore/headshots/shocks though, which can only be good. I though DOTD was a tad light on gory moments (though bits like the chainsaw 'accident' helped redress the balance).

Basically, if it's a film I really like, I'll always prefer a longer cut. Leon, T2, Aliens, JFK, Apocalypse Now - I'll always watch the longer version, even if it is a bit flabby.

What I want are DVDs that let me add which deleted scenes I want so, in Aliens' case, I'd have a version that ditches everything at the colony before the Marines arrive and the scene where Hudson theorises about the Queen but keeps the 'Ultimate Badasses', sentry guns and 'Dwayne/Ellen' bits.

Get to it, boffins.

An excellent point, I love DVDs that allow you to pick and choose the extra scenes.

Feel exactly the same way about the Aliens DC too.

You dont see him blow his brains out at the end of the directors cut. All you see is him raise the gun, then a shot of the boat as you hear the gun go of.

The directors cut is alot better than i hoped. Alot of the extra bits do add to the whole movie, like escaping from the gun shop.

I cant wait for the dvd to come out, looks like it has some great features on it.

I enjoyed the movie, didn't think I would. I was actually impressed by the amount of gore it did have in the cinema release, considering it had a bit bigger budget than your average movie and had two respected actors in Polley and Rhames.

The opening 10 minutes were very well put together and I thought the ending was good too. How you got to see, to some degree, what happened to the others during the end titles was a nice little wrap up.

I think the movie impressed a lot more people than expected. When it was first announced, then who was writing it, then who was directing it, so many people already had it down as being completely awful but it mangaged to rise above a lot of it.

Both this and the 2004 Texas Massacre remakes both impressed me - whether that's because my expectation where so low already I don't know, but impressed all the same

When I saw the posters for it, I thought "another crappy remake", and didn't even entertain the thought of going to see it.

Then my mate phoned telling me I had to see it, I'd cream my pants etc. And I did!

Also, this guy is the best character in this type of film since Hudson in Aliens:

"Well that's great, that's just fuckin' great man, now what the fuck are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty shit now man... That's it man, game over man, game over, man! Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?"

I'm love the opening as well - that shot from the copter when the van crashes into a car and then the petrol (gas) pump is just awesome. :(

Lions, tigers and bears...oh my!

This directors cut looks excellent!

Like some others though I would have preferred the shot of the gun being put to his chin left out.

In the theatrical version, he just looks down at the gun. You're not sure wheteher he will kill himself or go out gun blazing attacking the zombies.

I love the R3 cover art. If they do decide to go with that one, I may just get the R3 over the R1.

Well, as a horror fan and someone who worships the original trilogy,I refused to go to the cinema to see it. Was this a mistake then? I've heard so many different opinions about I just dont know. Then again if a Evil Dead fan loves it as biglime said, I may have too. Uncut DVD order here we come.

BIG MISTAKE.

Anyone who dismissed this movie (or any other remake for that matter) before seeing, deserves to miss out IMO.

People should get off their high horse and enjoy some movies.

One of my favourite films this year.

I enjoyed every moment of it. I was so glad it was good as it meant a lot or people had to eat humble pie. Of course, you still get those who deny it's brilliance.....
