Pes4. Live. Yay!

Oh, maybe it hasn't improved too much then. Initial impression was that they had sorted the fundamental flaws of simply running around feeling as if you are in control of the ball. I always felt that they needed to go RIGHT back to the basics. I notice they're still using the ridiculous hype jargon, "fluid player kinetic system".

Ive preordered from simply games for 28.97

I was going to get my xbox chipped and wasnt gonna bother with live but that will change once it comes out.

Spending £60 to play this online (£30 for live), but should be worth it

looking foward to some competetive matches with the experienced evo players on the board.

I pray that the control scheme is something like WE6:FE (Analogue control).

I would've ordered it from Simply but their flyer given out at the Game Stars Live show says it's £27.99 when the site says it's £1 more

They lied!

Anyways more to the point as to why I'm kinda holding out a tad on this title is because when I did play it at Game Stars, I found that the final touch on the ball seemed weak (ie. when shooting), compared to say WE6: FE on GC or WE8 on PS2. It felt kinda meh because of it.

I hope that with PES4 they do polish it up good, include oodles more than what WE8 currently offers and removing that 'part of the shimmering head' of players - I mean what's that all about? It's in WE8 too - all the players have a mysterious white bald patch to the side of their head that shifts when they move! Arrgh!

the last game with that problem was fifa2002. the game has had PES-style 8-way touch dribbling ever since.

it seems to be a graphical concession on a couple of the PS2 versions to negate slowdown. it doesn't exist on PC or GC versions and probably won't on the xbox

I'm sure that box image is fake. Looks like someone nicked the Amazon image and made their own...

I doubt Totti would appear on the cover after his appaling behaviour in Euro 2004 and Henry has heavily featured in the FIFA packaging/advertising in the past. If it is the official cover it is the worst one ever.

I did read somewhere recently that they had signed up Henry for Pro Evo 4. As long as the game kicks ass then I won't be looking at the cover much anyway as the CD will be permanently stuck in my Xbox <_<

Well, well, well... I just installed the FIFA2005 demo and while it's hard to judge after 3 minutes of Keyboard play it certainly feels a whole lot better than previous versions. The way the players actually move and control the ball seems good (ie more like PES). Playing with the keyboard is a nightmare though I can't work out all the controls. For some reason my Play USB PS2 pad convertor thingy makes it impossible to navigate the menus. Like the stick is constantly pushing to the right. Any suggestions on how to sort it? This has certainly raised my interests, but a proper play is required.  Out next week i believe.

For a link to the demo (85meg) look here :

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=56573

after 10 mins with a PS2 pad (in the demo triangle is lob, O pass, X shoot, R2 dash was what I managed to figure out) it feels very much like a PES game, but with analog direction on the analog stick (so, like WE6FE then); the d-pad performing trick dribbling or being used to take a heavy-ish first touch in a particular direction (very nice idea actually). will have to abuse GAME's return policy, methinks. but it at least has a very good dribbling engine.

I played a bit of Winning Eleven 8 this afternoon and it was a huge improvement on the pile of crap that was PES3.

The game flows now. It appears quicker, more fluid. The handball nightmare seems to have gone, and the advantage rule is applied with some degree of sense this time around. I also thought the new throw-in technique was long overdue for the series, and they done it very well at last. I can't say the slowdown was as bad as I've heard people make out either, there was some slight slowdown but nothing horrific.

So after my hatred of PES3 I can at last put PES4 on the list to buy this winter, as long as they don't f*ck up the conversion.

Handball is gone completely. The advantage rule is better but it can be a bit like a Rugby advantage. The play will continue if their team keep the ball after a foul, but if they lose it after about 5 seconds or so the ref then pulls it back. Seems to me that if he makes his decision he should stick to it, not wait to see if any advantage is gained. The new throw-ins though are absolutely the worst change of all IMO. It's slow and clumsy. I mean how hard is it to throw the ball to a player 5 yards away. You don't rotate on the spot and try to line up your direction, you just bloody throw it at him. The old system wasn't perfect but it was heaps better. And you must have got lucky with the stadium for there not to be any slow down or you didn't take any corners.

This is a fake but apparently the details on the back are correct. If so then System Link is in. This would take over XBConnect the same way Halo has, allowing patches etc to be used. However the 1-14 seems strange at best.

Brought to you by Han, the dutch guy that leaked the info that started this very topic. Can he claim a second exclusive?

Check my front cover thread for the actual one.

I've been playing WE8 with the Wide camera and the commentary switched off since launch and I've found the slowdown to be minimal. It only gets a little jarring when the penalty box gets really crowded, but that's it.

I was sitting watching several people play Winning Eleven 8 and during a crowded penalty box moment it was almost as if bullet time had kicked in!

Seriously, I just don't get this. I've either blocked it out somehow and can't see it, or it's simply not as bad as people are making it out to be.

I think turning the commentary off helps? I've had that switched off since I got it.

It's not as noticable when you are playing the game for a while but, take a break and sit and watch others playing and you soon notice. As for turning the commentary off, we didn't actually Know how to do that as obviously the menus are in Japanese.

*shrug* I always wondered what people were going on about when I started playing the game and didn't notice any slowdown. It's weird cause I usually notice [and get pissed off at] these things almost immediately.

Incidentally, the sound settings are found in the second-to-last option on the pre-match screen (where you select formation, etc and just before you start the match), and also the 8th option down in the pause menu. Just lower the setting to 0 stars (default is 3). Sorted. :)

Turning off the crowd will get rid of the slowdown completely.

For translations of the menus go here:

or here, if that doesn't work:

Hope this helps.
