Remote dongle

Full spec list and pack-ins

It comes with a charger, a pair of headphones with a built-in volume and playback control (no LCD though), a battery (internal, but apparently user-removable* with a bit of effort), a pouch for the system, and a charger.

No word on battery life.

Turns out those UMDs don't have Minidisk-style shutters at all- presumably not a good idea to chuck them in your pocket.

Still no work on price.

A picture of that remote:

No great shocks there.

*THANK FUCK

Hmm, actually:

MAIN I/O:

IEEE802.11b (Wi-Fi) standards

USB 2.0 (Target)

Memory Stick PRO Duo

IrDA

IR Remote (SIRCS standards)

Buggery. £70 for 256MB. Thirdparty.

Edit- or not. Linkage

£45 for 256MB Sandisk, £93 for 512MB Sandisk.

Edit- realises this means Sony aren't including a memory card.

WHY?! A memory card's a hell of a lot more useful than a pair of bloody earphones and a remote! AARGH.

Wankers.

The memory cards are standard memory sticks. The smallest thirdparty Memory Stick Duo Pro I could find is a 16MB Sandisk one for about £25. The smallest firstparty one I could find is a 256MB one for just under £60.

Edit- That's a good point, actually, you might not need to use the Pro ones. I'm not too hopeful though.

Yep, memory sticks ain't cheap. As someone pointed out a while ago you can often get a flash MP3 player with the same capacity for a mere £10 or so more.

Would it have killed Sony to include the absolute one most essential bit of gaming kit beyond the console itself and charger in the box? Gner. I'd hoped that they would've learned by now.

Edit - "they" = the entire sodding games hardware industry. Except MS, they have some common sense with the HDD thing.

I've got to admit I'm going to buy a 256MB stick anyway, and shove some MP3s or bits of the Ultimate Matrix Collection on it (as soon as I figure out how). Nice to see Sony not being totally unreasonable with the profiteering when it comes to PSP features- MP3 playback's confirmed (I'll have to convert from WMA though. Gner) and the menu screen at TGS suggested that photos, video, and music would play from memory sticks okay. What sort of photos would I carry around on my PSP? Who could tell.

A bit off topic here but:-

...a pair of headphones (with a remote control dongle on the cord, assumedly for volume adjustment since more complex and feature-packed LCD-based remote dongles like that on an iPod can be expensive)

Where was my LCD-based remote with my ipod?

Does anyone use the remote for any portable gear? Out of the many CD players, MiniDisc players and MP3 players I've had, I never find myself using the remotes for any length of time.

I only use the remote with my iriver, I don't even recall choosing a track from the main unit, ever.

I ALWAYS use the remote, it's far easier surely?

And you can just clip it where you like and always have easy access to play/volume/stop etc...

I can't imagine having to whip out the entire portable (whatever the device) just to turn the volume down or press stop...

Maybe it's just because the remotes I get with my stuff are shit, and that they make the headphone cables far too long, but I just leave the player in my pocket and tap the button through my jeans. I suppose this wouldn't work if you're Justin Hawkins, though.

:D

Justin Hawkins is the frontman from The Darkness. Where have you BEEN for the last 18 months? ;)

EDIT- and, oh, commentary. Memory sticks are, apparently, a lot less volatile than SD cards, which may be a good thing given people will be updating them very often.

Learned what?

Sony arent stupid - Do you think they are making these consoles to please hardcore gamers? Are they hell...

Not including a memory card is just a lot of extra revenue for them. After all, they are a business...

They went to the lengths of including headphones, though, which suggested they were trying to include some basic necessities. If they're angling it as a multimedia music playing thingmy a memory stick's even more obvious an inclusion.
