GamePro Interview with Bungie's Frank O'Connor:

Including the Arbiter as a playable character was a controversial move in Halo 2. Is it possible Halo 3 will include another playable character besides M.C.?

Of course it's possible. Anything's possible. But I think that aspect of the game will be pretty interesting, maybe even newsworthy.

What kinds of changes have been made to enemy A.I.?

The most visible difference when you play will be the sheer number of characters you fight. Battling teeming hordes of bad guys in huge, complex arenas will be one of the most defining characteristics of the game. How they behave and how they fight will probably cement those memories. We've built on the strengths of the last two games, fixed and improved some of the "old" characters, and innovated completely in some instances. Encounters -- single battles against packs and individuals, are going to define campaign.

Does the returning Assault Rifle replace the SMG altogether? Does it function as a close-range weapon, or does it feature any long-distance capabilities? If so, is it intended to replace the Battle Rifle as well?

SMGs are still there, tweaked slightly, but not dramatically. The purpose of the AR is to fill a void, or rather, a vital role. A weapon that is not only useful to spawn with, but is flexible and powerful enough that you might stick with it rather than favoring another type of weapon. The proof of that pudding is that AR-only games of Slayer are absolutely fun and satisfying. That weapon will be honed to a glossy sheen by launch, but bluntly, it's about perfect right now. That of course is an opinion, but believe me, it's balanced by knowing what our audience wants

How will grenades work? Will M.C. be able to carry four of each grenade -- 4 x 4 = 16, correct? -- or will players have to choose which to carry?

Players will have plentiful grenade options. More on that soon. But grenades have an added layer of strategy this time around. Picking role-specific nades is important, but silkily natural.

What can you tell us about the "Spiker" weapon? Is it a precision-based weapon? Does it replace the Brute Shot?

The Brute Spike Rifle will be revealed in more detail soon. It can be dual-wielded by the Chief and can be thought of, loosely, as a Brute version of the SMG - albeit nastier in tone. The Brute Shot is being tuned for great justice in Halo 3 and is almost certain to return.

What changes have been made to the Needler? Does it still have the "instant death" attack?

The Needler has gone through significant changes. I'll call them improvements. The instant death attack - filling your opponent with a certain number of consecutive crystal-shards - is being tuned. But yes, it will still assplode your face.

Will there be any significant changes from Halo 2's matchmaking system? Are you leaning towards a more server browser-based structure, ala Gears of War and Vegas?

We are still building the core game around matchmaking, but we will give players more options and greater flexibility this time around. Although this has its drawbacks, I think that most Live players appreciate the way Halo 2 matchmaking works, and will enjoy the improvements vastly.

Will we see any returning favorite multiplayer maps from Halo 2? Would you mind naming some you're considering? (please say Lockout, please say Lockout...)

You won't see anything identical, but you might see something familiar.

Are any online Co-Op plans in the works? What about other online modes?

What is a co-op? We'll do our best to make the online experience a blast.

Lastly, any word on when the online beta is schedule to go live? How will this process work? Any word on how large the file may be?

The file will be exactly 873.46 megs and...I'm kidding. Still being figured out, but we'll keep you posted.

Great use of time guys!

Also, please keep posting huge lists of numbers. They're riveting.

Easter eggs were one of the big reasons I played the campaign in Halo 1 so many times. Mainly because of the game itself obviously, but the hidden things keep you exploring.

It's probably a sign that Halo 2 wasn't as good as the original* because I only ever bothered to go and find one of the hidden skulls.

*but still fucking awesome you fools.

So the big new feature os hordes of baddies to fight? This does absolutely nothing for me at all. i'd be more excited if they said the big new feature was one on one fights with elites that are all about cunning to get through. not boss battles, just foes that are worthy. In Halo 1 on legendary there were several situations where you only had 1 elite left but knowing that you both had shoelds and that he could kill you as fast as you could kill him made it an awesome hunter vs hunted scenario. Halo 2 screwed this up completely by having too many elites pile in at once, making git a fragfest or having elites that could survive being stuck with plasmas. It broke its own rules basically. Looks like they still havent worked out what made Halo 1 so great.

This is true; Halo 1 was the most exquisite of flukes.

Isn't the 'big battle' thing rumoured to be a discrete game type though? An option?

I don't know anything about that, but recently Frankie has certainly been talking about epic scale battles in campaign, both in terms of the environments and numbers of enemies. It's something that I'm really looking forward to, but I imagine the majority of the action will be on a smaller scale, much like Halo CE.

easter eggs in halo 1? what was there?

i knew about the skulls in halo 2, but i never knew they did anything similar in the original halo. sounds like a good excuse to play through it again.

That would be just fine by me. It's been said many times I know, but levels like AoTCR and TSC would be great references.

Let me smack loads of sleeping grunts without alerting Elites too, please.

There's a list of easter eggs here. I've no idea whether it's comprehensive though.

i've just been looking on that site actually. shame there's nothing really as interesting as looking for the skulls in halo 2. i really enjoyed finding those without looking up their locations first.

i've got a question that somebody might be able to answer then: on the level where you're dropped off in the swamp near the downed pelican, i noticed something that i couln't ever get to. when you head on round the level to the bit where you can cross over the fallen tree, to the left there is an invisibility pick up next to a big pipe. on the hill above there i've noticed somebody moving around. it appears on my radar as a friendly yellow dot, but i could never find a way up there to see what it was. does anyone know anything about it?

You do actually briefly see the flood at this point, as silhouettes up above, but whether they show on your radar I don't know.

There is always that 'Mendoza' (I think that's what he's called) easter egg too. You have to throw grenades repeatedly at the beginning of the level. You then stay in the pelican which drops you off at the top edge of the map. He's up there somewhere amongst some 2D trees but he doesn't move, so that probably isn't it either.

I'm pretty sure it is a flood-infected marine. If you proceed through the level normally without hanging about you'll catch a glimpse of him, just as you start crossing over the fallen tree trunk to the area where the grunts run out screaming there little heads off.

May 16th fellas

Clear your diaries.

Halo 3's multiplayer beta will go live on 16th May at 1pm GMT and run until 7th June at 7.59am GMT, Microsoft said this morning.

You're promised a look at "new levels, weapons, vehicles and game types, as well as a chance to provide valuable data that [developer] Bungie will use in continued development".

The maps available will be Snowbound, High Ground and Valhalla, while you'll get to pootle around in the Mongoose all-terrain vehicle, using the new Assault Rifle, the Brute Spiker, the Spartan Laser and Spike Grenades to take one another out.

That's assuming you're on the beta. Gamers who secured a position by buying a specially marked copy of Crackdown, through the "Rule of Three" promotion or via another competition (or by ceaselessly begging friends at Bungie), will have no problems.

Microsoft reckons there should still be some copies of Crackdown on sale with a beta sticker on them, so keep an eye out.

In the meantime, why not take a look at a new behind-the-scenes trailer on Bungie's website or Xbox Live Marketplace? Called "Is Quisnam Protero Damno!", it offers a glimpse of Halo 3 multiplayer maps being made.

It's worrying but I've got my fingers crossed that Halo 2 was just a half-way step towards Halo 3, falling between the 2 different styles of play.

Wasn't massively keen on Halo 2 multiplayer mind, far too twitchy with the auto-aim stuck in there to compensate so I'm a bit apprehensive about how Halo 3's online stuff is going to turn out.

Could I still join in with this beta if I bought Crackdown now? Or is it all over?

You'll be alright if you buy a copy with the Halo3 Beta invite sticker (round, white and on the front of the box).

Otherwise, no.

oh yes! Nicked from Xboxyde.com >> New Vidoc

"Bungie announced just a few minutes ago that the Beta of Halo 3 would be available on May 16. And just because they can, they also released this new Vidoc. Be aware though that this video is from the alpha build, the beta should already look quite a bit better."

looks ace - especially the trip mine and bubble shields. Time to finish those games before it ships... ^_^

Oh god yes - been purposefully hidding under a rock with regards Halo3 news the only effort I've made was getting Crackdown to get on the beta and then discovering that Crackdown is a kick ass game - HALO3 hmmmmmm I look forward to seeing you all there in May - going to look at booking some time off and getting rid of the family!
