The Watchtower - A thread for all comics

Comic panel of the week:

Frank Castle, trapped in a nuclear silo in Siberia, trying to get a little girl to safety, sends a message to Moscow...

'[if anyone tries to stop me] I will burn Russia off the face of the planet.'

Ennis' Punisher is very much my guilty pleasure. He's written it as a series of pure crime/war/vengeance stories as opposed to the traditional version of the character, poncing around with team-ups every other week. It's one note yet strangely satisfying.

I'll be honest, I didn't like the Punisher as a character at all until Ennis started writing him, and now it is one of my favourite monthly books. This is the Punisher as I'd always expected him to be- unbelievably brutal and without even a hint of remorse. If you've read an enjoyed Preacher (well enjoyed Preachers violence, mainly) pick up the first 12 issue run that Ennis wrote. You won't regret it.

Oh and has anyone else heard about Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers project? It sounds very interesting-

And their is an 11 page excerpt here-

http://www.dccomics.com/media/excerpts/2699_x.pdf

This could be very special.

Donrosco: the colouring, I feel, is deliberate. This is deliberately not meant to look like Liquid! did it, and is meant to look pulp/EC. See my above argument :P

Ah, totally, yeah, but it still hurts my eyes! I never really read superhero comics until the watchmen / DKR (I was a 2000AD kid through and through) so I had no preconceptions to subvert. Funnily enough, I read a lot of them nowadays...

As far as DK2 is concerned, it has that incredible pacing of DKR but as soon as DC / Marvel start wandering off into different universes and realities and the JLA gets all Soap Opera on us then I start to snooze. I like my superheroes earth bound to an extent. I was going on about it earlier in the thread but i'm really feeling Supreme Power at the moment. It's kind of a rip off of JLA but a lot more 'realistic', at least for a superhero comic.

In DK2, yeah. In the normal comics run? No idea. I don't follow DC comics very closely. Hell, a lot of the characters in DK2, I have no idea who they are :P

Ah, so I was not mistaken. As far as I know that's the only sex scene between him and WW in DC history. But perhaps some geek can prove me wrong.

I've read the first Punisher MAX story (the one with that memorable ending) but not the other two (Kitchen irish and something about Russia). Are they as good?

Kitchen Irish is okay at best, Ennis has kind of done the Ireland thing to death (and better) before. Mother Russia has one more issue to go but so far, it's been ace. Fury offers full access to the Federal criminal database if Frank agrees to go into Russia to retrieve a young girl carrying a lethal bio-weapon. Frank vs the Russian Army, basically. The latest issue has him wrenching a Mongolian martial arts experts leg out and around like a chicken drumstick until he realises he's scaring the wee lass.

It's about as far from high art as you can get but it's a lot of fun, in that OTT Commando way.

has anyone mentioned blankets yet? It was on display in a gamestation and from barely turning a page and looking at one or two panels it seemed absolutely magnificent, full of romance / coming of age stuff with splendid drawings and oh man, beautiful. I'm saving buying it till I finish my degree and I'm gonna sit in the park with beers

Moving-on, what do people think of Dark Knight 2? Obviously it's nowhere near as good as Dark Knight Returns, but does it stand up on its own as a decent story...?

I didn't find DK2 dreadful but it's definitely not great. Miller tries desperately to write edgy and hip but it just fails and the colouring is like Lyn Varley had an eppy in Photoshop (this was her first 'go' at colouring on a computer I believe).

There's one good moment and that's at the end of the first issue when Superman gets beaten up by the Bat-organised 'Justice League'. The rest of it is just . . plain nonsense.

On the subject of Punisher, the move from Knights to Max has been brilliant. The comedy team-ups wore thin very quickly under the former but the Max version has been great. I'm enjoying the Mother Russia arc a lot.

No penetration in the panels...but Wonder Woman is made pregant by Superman in Kingdom Come too. Batman is made the godfather.

Anyone who hasn't read it ought to take Kingdom Come (and Marvels for that matter) for a spin. Very good stuff - KC is my favourite comic I think.

Again, out of the DCU proper though. In the proper DCU I think Lois would get pissed off.

While I'm here - I'd like to read something independent. I do like my superhero comics, but I think I want to start reading some of those comics with pretty covers that you see on the shelves in FP with "Issue 1" on the front...

Something completely un-violent. And un-heroic. And....well boring I guess. Any suggestions?

So is.....

Thor a product of technology??

l think Loki is behind this, its a good idea but l think its suspect

Yeah, The Ultimates is my favourite book at the moment. The trial of The Hulk was one of the best comics I’ve ever read. Powerful stuff.

But I don’t think Thor is some mental patient with some cool gadgets. It’s gotta be Loki.

Yup, I have Blankets (too much crappy superhero stuff in this thread!) and it is absolutely magnificent. In years to come it will be looked back on very, very fondly.

Well I hope so. I would be very dissapointed if he does turn out to be crazy. I am however looking forward to him beating the shit out the Ultimates.

Another thing I'm liking in the comic at the moment are the referemces to Ultron. Like Ultron's head being on Pym's desk. Can't wait for that story arc.

I skimmed through the proceeding pages of this thread and I don't think anyone's mentioned my latest purchase yet: The Red Star

coll.jpg

Needless to say I hunted this down mainly due to the fact I loved the game (took a while to 'aquire', but we got it in the end, it's a shame more people won't get to play it ) but the comic was suprisingly good. At 312 pages the collectors edition weighs in as quite a hefty book, collecting the first 10 issues of the series. Some gorgeous art, an interesting plot (militarized sorcery, monolithic technology, war, Russion iconography) it was nice to read something with a little more intelligence than the regular Manga dross I have a habit of picking up....recommended!

Spoilers.

Cap can take him...

I'm looking forward to the Ultron arc so we can get Vision in. I'm not too impressed with the Tony/Natasha stroyline at the moment though, seems a little rushed and clumsy. There must be something more to it - spy? Tony dying? The new Ironman series has got off to a very slow start so I doubt that will explain anything for a while...

Personally I think that the Scientist is Loki though. Fits. Which I guess must make Thor the real deal...

To be honest, i really like DK2. Having reread it and DKR several times, I actually prefer it to DKR - though I don't consider them to be in the same 'universe', DK2 is so different.

DKR was very good for the first issue (the harvey dent one), less so in the next one (the Mutants), then it just went to shit in the next two, in writing but more so than in art. Compare the carefully layed out beatifully drawn art in the first ep, to the poorly drawn scribbles in the last ep.

Yeah the ultimates is brilliant. The hulk trial was good-but I thought they could have actually showed abit more of the trial itself.

DK2 was average. I dont think it was as bad as some made out, but the art just wasnt my thing. It was so confusing to actually follow. Storywise ok, liked what they did with the flash and him bieng in an electricity generarator.

Wasnt to keen on hal jordan in that story though. I love hal jordan (that outdated dialogue makes me laugh), and I thought he could have been done better.

But otherwise it was just sort of average. The whole villain subplot just seemed bolted on for the hell of it. There was alot of stuff in there which was either rubbish/or just not told well enough. But hey, thats comics.

Just got my subs box switched over from Incognito, Canterbury to GOSH in London - thank god. There's usually a two/three month gap between my purchases as a result but not anymore. Looking forward to getting my fix on a regular basis now.

Man, i went into forbidden planet for a mooch and i found a massive big thick beast of book containing all of Alan Moores From Hell for £24.99.

I'm in love! It looks lovely, art direction evrything. Birthday in april so it's mine then.

Man behind counter was very nice to me explaining that he thought it was his best work.

I can't wait to see if he's right or not.

Also, Samurai Executioner vol.3 is out, i'm skint so i can't afford but i'm hoping it picks up the pace abit compared to the slower vol.2.

In other news i want to know where i can get Alien vs Predator War and such like?

Are you mad? DKR is consistently brilliant from start to finish. Still the best comic ever written and it hasn't aged at all (apart from russia vs usa). The whole gang culture thing has come true FFS!

Finally got Ultimates2 Issue 4. Very cool Thor art. Hmm. . some spoiler discussion: Loki - have a look in Ultimates2 Issue 1 second or third page from the end. A guy in a green suit, smirking. Just reading a post from Millar over on his message board and he's even saying have a look back at Volume 1 Issue 4 at the campfire with Banner waving a file about. Haven't got mine with me so can't check but that's forward thinking.

As for Ultimate Vision a quick flick through the Ultimate Nightmare trade has an appearance from him (I think) in bits and pieces heralding Gah-Lak-Tus.

Klaus Jansen CAN'T fucking draw!

Look at his T2 adaption, or that flashback he did in Knightfall.

THE COLOURIST saved him in both DKR (Lynn Varley) and the Legends of the Dark Night story(#6-#10) Gothic (Steve Buccellato)...
