The Watchtower - A thread for all comics

Right, I dunno whether it would go here or to dredge the dedicated manga thread that died last august but I'm on the lookout for some. The only 2 I'm reading at the mo are One Piece (which is fucking awesome) and Case Closed (which although not as awesome is incredibly enjoyable). I look at the Viz/Shonen/Tokyo Pop carousel in Waterstones and a lot of it seems big bug eyed girls with short skirts and very little in the way of decent humour or action, but apart from trawling the net, it's all we have around these parts. What can folk recommend for my in the similar yet not identical style of what I'm reading at the mo. Basically good humour, strong characters, a dollop of sillyness and wicked action.

Mail, Kurosagi's Corpse Deliery Service and, if you haven't already read them in any other format, the Gunsmith Cats ominbuses from Dark Horse are all well worth a punt for the couple of quid they cost on Amazon Marketplace. They're a bit more adult than One Piece though.

Also Dark Horse seem to put a bit more effort in with their covers so they look better on your bookshelf. Mmm.

As good as Death Note is (up to about half way), it's hardly

good humour, strong characters, a dollop of sillyness and wicked action
that you can find in Waterstones.

If you don't mind leaving the action behind, Sgt. Frog is silly, funny, has great characters and can be found in Waterstones.

Does anyone know where I can get scans of Scream! Issues? Specifically the one with "The Thirteenth Floor" in?

On comics, I've been reading Lone Wolf & Cub for a while. Which is really good.

I'd like to start reading some Marvel/DC stuff but there is so much, I don't really know where to start.

It has strong characters and it's a good series! I was almost disappointed half way (you'll know what I mean) but I think it picks up again and can't wait to read the next two. It's only short and it's a fantastic little manga.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. The reason I said Waterstones specifically is that

1) It's practically the only bookshop in Chesterfield (the indie that had loads of Manga shut about 3 week ago)

2) I'm impatient and like being able to go to a shop and buy it. I hate waiting for shit to be delivered.

I'll start rummaging for these on Amazon and stuff. Cheers again <_<

The links are....are..... DEAD!

Oh man, I'm sorry, I didn't bother trying them as I knew they'd worked before. Maybe they got clobbered with a takedown notice, that's what happened to the fabulous Misty archive. Was that followed by an authorised commercial collection we could happily pay for? Was it fuck.

Yeah it's very good. Sadly I can't see a second volume. :(

Edit - I think my local comic shop is full of shit. The guy there said there's only one volume of it and has lied a few times previously about stuff he had no reason to. But there's three out, one coming out in the next couple of days and another in November.

Like I say, usually I only but from shops on the high street cos I'm impatient but Amazon marketplace and Play.com really are the way forward for this type of thing.

Anyway, read Corpse Delivery Service and Get Backers last night, both were very entertaining much props for the suggestions. Now I just have to wait for payday so I can pick up the rest.

I find Amazon itself (not marketplace) very cheap and quick for manga especially with large orders when they're split up more often than not.

I have never tried Get Backers so will add it to my next order I think. Nor have I tried Play, let me have a look!

Mike Wieringo has died.

I remember when the Marvel UK kids' reprint comic "Spectacular Spider-Man Adventures" reprinted one of his stories - that was the first time I saw an artist draw Spider-Man in the "skinny" style, and I loved it instantly. I also enjoyed the few issues of his Fantastic Four run I read, but unfortunately I don't think I've read many other full comics by him.

A lot of people on the tribute threads at various forums are talking about how he was one of the friendliest artists they spoke to at conventions.

Instead of posting any one picture by him, I'll link to his DeviantArt page:

Did anyone read The Nightly News? I thought it was something pretty unique (and it's got me psyched about author/artist Jonathan Hickman's other projects... hell I even bought Legion of Monsters: Satana for his Living Mummy back up strip) but I heard it compares pretty badly to Brian Wood's Channel Zero. I loved Demo but I think DMZ's kind of meandering so I wonder if anyone who knows his work better could give a more informed appraisal.

I thought Nightly News was very promising - it looked like nothing else, and I loved the incredibly dark, nihilistic story, but it was a bit hard to follow, and could have been structured better. It's his first comic though, so you'd definitely cut him a bit of slack. I'm definitely going to pick up his new stuff.

Check the second post in this thread for someone with scream scans.

I'm not huge on Marvel & DC, but i'd probably start with Frank Miller's Daredevil for Marvel, and Batman: Year One by . . . Frank Miller. Or Kingdom Come by Mark Waid & Alex Ross with all the DC characters.
