Because the one was added to differentiate between the PSone and PS2. That way you wouldn't get upset retailers and consumers.

On a different note, the guys behind the HDLoader clone HDAdvance (well it's more complicated than that - HDLoader was a rip-off of the unfinished source code written by the guys behind HDAv... Well, you get the picture) are working on a version for PStwo that works with USB hard drives.

Dunno what the speed is compared to the DVD drive though, so it might be one for the hardcore Yarrers only.
