Donnie Darko: Any Good

Tonay

I saw the first half of this with a friend, then turned it off because I was bored.

Without spoiling me (I assume there must be the best twist evar at the end), can anyone explain why everyone loves this film so much?

It's just slow and boring. Stupid boy goes around sleepwalking with his bunny - pfft, I do that everyday.

It's a good film. Unfortunately, its cult status has now bitten it in the ass; it became so mainstream as a cult film that it's no longer cool to like it, so a lot of people will tell you it's a load of shit. Which it isn't. It's just not a masterpiece.

Yeah, so what, there's been a backlash. That doesn't stop it from being one of the best films of the last ten years, or just a really good film.

I found it bewitching, beautiful, exciting and terrifying. Surely that's the purpose of good cinema?

In my opnion (before all the haters flood in), it has a great script, superb acting, cool music and masterful direction.

Anyway.

Now that's just plain wrong. The movie is ok. Not confusing at all (well I didn't think so anyway) I just didn't think there was anything special about it.

It's just another movie that people who like to let everone know that they have different taste than the masses will proclaim to be the best thing ever for a while until the next one comes along. Although as Crispin Glover says now so many people have seen it that lot's of those who originally claimed it was great now say it's shit, because it's not cool anymore.

These are just the (probably wrong) conclusions I've drawn about the movie in the time since me and my friends watched it when it first came out.

If you think it's stupid and boring then don't watch the rest, you'll think thats stupid and boring too. Also you'll likely think the ending is stupid too. In conclusion, you will not like this movie, go watch one that is more to your tastes instead  I'm sure there are lots out there.

its overrated but its still great, I mean its interesting and stands repeated viewing pretty well. though its true not much happens, though it comes together very nicely at the end. the ending makes the film really, or at least the last 15 minutes.

What about those of us who saw the film when it just came out?

It's fucking awful.

Requiem for a Dream IS brilliant.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was a woefully poor film. Then I read an article in which the director explained what was going on, and I came to the conclusion that it's a fucking shambolically feeble stack of self-indulgent arse-froth, rather than just a woefully poor film.

Still, it did have Patrick Swayze.

Oh, and Requiem for a Dream is very good indeed, even if the modern day setting makes it a bit anachronistic.

It's got the worst twist ever at the end. It all makes very little sense and the director's interpretation (which you'll get brutally hammered into your synapses Matrix: Exposition style if you watch the Director's Cut) is absolute wank.

So, watch the original version, and come up with your own interpretation. It's far more enjoyable that way.

'the ending makes the film really, or at least the last 15 minutes.'

That was what I wanted to hear. I got the feeling that it was a pretty unusual film I was watching, but not a particularly good one.

Also, what was with that first scene in his school, where we go around various classrooms with cherry music in the background, and little girls and dancing and stuff? Seemed odd to me.

I'll probably watch the second half within the next few weeks.

I do, however, fel like watching Requiem For A Dream.

Yes, very good. The acting and music is pure class. I think the older you are, the more you get from it. Requiem for a dream is very good, infact, Clint Mansell who did the music for it and Pi is reforming PWEI & I've got tickets!! I can't wait!!

I heard the Madworld cover first, so I thought, 'thats a good song', then I heard the original, and I thought 'that sounds crap'.

What I'm saying is this: it's YOU that is shite. And by shite, I obviously mean 'mistaken'.

The old one sounded so sad and haunting...the old one sounded rubbish. The singer didn't have as good a voice, and the music sounded more synthy if I remember correctly.

But this thing always happens with covers. Hell, I thought Marilyn Manson's cover of Tainted Love was crap, but it's a fucking masterpiece compared to the dire original.

It would sound "synthy" it's from the 80's.

It is considered a classic by very many people. The dire Gary Jules version will never receive that accolade. It will be long forgotten.

Tonay, please don't embarrass yourself anymore than you have. It's nice you and your boyfriend listen to Gary Jules when being intimate. It's still a shite cover version though.
:D:lol::lol:

I'm not getting into whether the film's any cop or not, but the music IS trufaxingly awesome. It's worth checking the P2P networks for collections of the full soundtrack; Micheal Andrews' haunting, eerie score is more effective when interspersed with The Church, Echo & the Bunnymen et al. Oh, and it's got the operatic piece played in the cinema bit. Which is BETTER than YOU, guy.
