Ratchet 3 Scores Higher Than Gta:sa

I was quite surprised to read this on the frontpage of GameRankings.

Both games are of the third installment on the PS2 but I would never have guessed that Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal would get such high editorial ratings.

On 10/26 the PlayStation 2 received a new game from Rockstar Games titled GTA: San Andreas.  Since then 22 sites and magazines have reviewed it including BBC News Online, Game XC, UGO and GameDaily.  Together their reviews have resulted in an average ratio of 95.7%.  That ratio has resulted in this title becoming the 7th best game of all time and the 2nd best game on the PlayStation 2.
Ratchet & Clank 3 for the PlayStation 2 was released on 11/2 from SCEA.  It has been reviewed by 11 websites and magazines including Playstation Magazine, IGN, Cinescape Online and 1UP.  The average review ratio for all 11 editorial reviews has been 96.6% making this title place 2nd in the all time overall rankings and 1st among PlayStation 2 Games.

I will be even more surprised if Ratchet 3 maitains this spot over the following days/weeks.

Marks out of 10 (or out of 5) really skew such scores.

You're currently talking about a .9% tolerance between the two games, and it would only take one 4 out of 5 to change that.

I thought the Crash/ZZap method of percentages and explanations were the best implementation. I don't see why so few reviews seem to use them nowadays.

It's like saying "my BWM M3 is better than your Yamaha R1". They're totally different things. At least compare apples with apples.

R&C 2 is probably the best example of its genre. Similarly, GTA:SA is the best example of its genre. Just because one scores higher than the other in a %age review score, it doesn't mean that it's "better".

I find percentages a little bit too precise. When I was studying for my degree they used to mark our artwork modules in percentages — which was beyond a joke. I got 57% every single time no matter what I did.

What was that old magazine that decided to mark games out of 1000? That was funny; they done it for a joke, surely.

It's all a bit daft though isn't it?  A game is either worth buying or it isn't.  Why do we need fine grading?

Don't you know?

People can't just go with the flow and buy a game completely unopinionated... they need to be told that the game is 1% better than the other big game, it's all about spoon-feeding.

I think people are just in disbelief that GTA:SA could possibly lose the place of highest scoring game of the year. I'm bloody surprised at the scores GTA:SA has got in the first place, because the fact is.. its not THAT good.

I agree, to me GTA:SA doesn't live up to its hype but it is definately a must have title.

Both Ratchet and Clank games had me hooked from the beginning to the very end. Infact played through the entire of Ratchet and Clank 2 in one day long sitting, and spent the few weeks after that replaying the game in the extra mode upgrading my weapons even further and taking on the more difficult game.

I loved the original, and will probably pick up this one at some point in the distant future. Bit of a too many games situation really.

As for review scores, I don't see why everybody doesn't simply use a five star system, like movie and music reviews. It would certainly put an end to all the "such and such a game didn't deserve a ten it should have got a 9!" arguments. A great game is a great game!

So then, my perfect and all powerful review score system would be:

5 Stars = Outstanding

4 Stars = Very good

3 Stars = Good

2 Stars = Average

1 Star = Poor

Maybe even a 0 Star mark for the truly atrocious :)

Can't wait for R&C3, not in the least bit bothered about GTA:SA. GTA needed so many fundamental things repairing that I can't believe I'll get any satisfaction from SA. R&C however, is the pinnacle of the genre, it's just a shame so many people give it relatively little attention.

There is a demo of R&C3 on the Sly 2 disk (which is an amazing game by the way and eveyone should rush out and buy it now!). It had a pretty amusing cutscene with Clank, a nice 2D level for some side character whose name forget and a blast everything that moves level like in the second game. I'm not a fan of R&C and the demo seemed pretty similar to what R&C2 but if thats what you like I'msure you will enjoy the third game.

Instead of percentages they should just print a line. The longer the line the better the game. But they shouldn't tell us the maximum length.

They could put a free ruler on the cover too. It would have markings like 'seminal', 'distinguished' etc.

Brilliant.

Even better, scrap the score and print a target price instead.

That's easy, just multiply the retail price by the review score as a fraction

60% score, 39.99 game

39.99 * 0.6 = 23.99!

Of course, to avoid jumping the gun, you'd have to wait at least 6 months until a decent average can be ascertained from Gamerankings/Metacritic/your mum and others.
