Thanks for the heads up on this - managed to get some Schneider Eisbock, St Bernardus abt 12, etc when everywhere else I'd normally go has been long sold out. 

 

Delivery is not cheap at £8.50 but can't win 'em all.

I do keep meaning to drop in but it’s just far enough from where I live for it to be a bit of a trek unless I happen to be passing, which isn’t very often as it’s a bit off the beaten path. Maybe post-lockdown I can combine it with a Meadowhall trip. 
 

I’ve only had Clamp of their beers, but that was incredible. I’ve got a box coming this week from a local beer shop and hoping there might be a SMOD beer included.

I visited them after travelling all the way from Cheshire last year!! Called in and met the lovely folk at Hop Hideoit on our way back to the station too. Decent scene over there...

 

But,  yep SMOD, they are making some of the highest quality and most interesting beers in the UK. Hard to get for the rest of us but that's no bad thing as it makes it all the more special when we do and , also, I still very much enjoy the concept of small producers making just enough to supply those that are local to them.

Yeah, in comparison to your efforts a 20 minute drive doesn’t seem that far at all!

 

Not sure if you’ve checked it out but the Sheffield Hopcast podcast has done a special on SMOD and Dann from the brewery was actually a guest on their latest episode. 
 

I went to the Peakender beer festival hosted by Thornbridge a couple of years ago and Jules from Hop Hideout organised the Saturday morning 5k. I’ve only been to their bar/shop at Kommune in town once though.

I'll give that a listen as Dann has a huge depth of knowledge and experience. When we visited he was very happy to spend 15 minutes showing us round the brewery and chatting beer even though he was mid brew. It's a fine set up there and everything from the beer to the artwork is done with genuine love.

Anyone seen any good real ale deals, with a view to Father’s Day coming up?

 

I’m more of a craft beer wanker nowadays, than real ale, and feel like my dad would begrudge his evening beers coming from a jazzy can and not a bottle.

 

He always picks the gold ones in pubs, so the lighter the better. Me and @Mike are going in jointly so a good deal for sub £50 would be perfect.

 

Also would rather not pay extra for the sake of getting a “free” glass in place of more beer, because he has plenty of them that my mum has robbed from pubs over the years.

I've been really into Tiny Rebel beers since lockdown began (not continually, although that would probably have made the days go quicker).

 

Think my two favourites are Stay Puft and Pump Up The Jam. Good to see Thornbridge getting a shout above too - Yelamu is a fantastic drink.

Stay Puft is awesome and the Imperial version is even better. Stay Puft with Irish Cream is a good shout too if you like the taste of Baileys.

Did the Omnipollo online tasting event at the weekend - they were all pretty much great, apart from the seltzer which wasn’t really my thing.

I’ve a beerbods subscription which is one beer a week (12 sent every 12 weeks) and I think I need to add a monthly subscription to it now there’s a New Normal (tm). 
 

Anyone got any recommendations? My wife has a beer52 which seems fine, but seems sensible to not get the same.

I haven't tried any of this "Seltzer" stuff yet, but from what I've read it sounds like fancy hooch type alcopops. Is that accurate?

bit late but I can’t recommend mikkeller beer mail highly enough. You get some fab, varied beers that retail way above what you pay

The new can designs are shockingly bad, but I think they're designed to look more 'mass market' for supermarket displays.

If you can be arsed with the faff, I much prefer just ordering direct from different breweries every month, instead of giving money to another company skimming off the top.

 

Plus you get to really sample all a brewery has to offer, typically.

 

So far I've ordered variety crates from Partizan, Villages, Tiny Rebel, Hackney Hops, Brewdog, and I'm currently eyeing up a few others.

 

I think my next order will probably be the mixed case from Brixton Brewery.

 

Most breweries will do a mixed case of 24 cans for £45-55 delivered.

I've been doing the same. Pretty much had something from most of the best breweries in Yorkshire (so therefore the best in the uk obvs). Got a 12 (pint!) can variety pack from Arbor which was great last week.

If you are doing mixed cases, try Wander Beyond - they are probably my favourite brewery at the moment, specialising in big beers, their heavily fruited sours, pales and dark beers are all fantastic

There's a mixed 12 pack here - It doesn't have what I would say is my favourite from them, Anura, which is a Blueberry Sour but Gasp, the peach and apricot milkshake IPA is amazing.

These are a few of my local breweries if you want to try something a bit different.

 

Double Barrelled have a tap room which is unfortunately sitting unused at the moment but was a big feature of my summer last year. Their beers are all wonderful, but they have really nailed pale ales.

Phantom Brewing is a new brewery that have only been open a few months - last weekend they put up a few bundle packs at a discount, so keep an eye on their social media for offers.

 

Wild Weather have been around for ages, and run my local pub. They are prolific and seemed to have a new beer out every week pre-covid. Their Damn Dead series, and Peach of A weekend are all fantastic but their pale ales are great too.

Elusive Brewing
These guys are set up opposite Siren in Wokingham and Andy & his dog are regulars in my favourite pub. I don't think I've had a bad beer from them.

 

 

I'd be keen to hear about small local breweries from other areas that might be flying under the radar but producing good stuff.

Also places like beer52, or beer hawk seem to just keep sending Brewdog, Magic Rock or Camden Brewery beers. At that point you might as well just get a selection from Sainsburys / Tescos / Whoever. It's not terrible beer, but it's quite uninteresting and they all taste the same as each other.

 

We've been ordering direct from a few breweries since lock down began and I've been really impressed with the speed of delivery. We've tried Crate, Pressure Drop and Tiny Rebel. I mean these aren't exactly unknowns, it's just what we picked.

 

We ordered from Pressure Drop as they're round the corner from us, they are great for those 8% hazy hop monster beers, big tall cans though so we can have a can between two.

We ordered Tiny Rebel, not because they're particularly small or indie, in fact I'm seeing them on Ocado quite a bit, but they always did beer at Green Man festival, since that's cancelled, it was nice to have a few different ones.

 

What I'm after now is some decent Lagers though. Have really enjoyed some decent craft ones. Pillars Brewery is delicious so I'll probably order a case or two from them.

I still have an occasional (quarterly?) sub with beer52 and don't tend to get many of the big/ bought out by massive BrewCo beers.  If a Camden one appeared that would probably prompt me to cancel though 

On a similar note flavourly need to dial back on their constant collaboration beers and get back to more like they used to be.

 

I think its probably a general indication of both how popular they have become and how 'craft beer' is a lot more commercial in general now.

 

My local beer shop (grumpy goat) has finally started doing web orders and local deliveries so have a box from them at the moment plus a couple of direct from brewery orders.

I realise I might have been speaking out of my arse about the beer sub ones, but it's a word of warning for the 'selection boxes' that they do on places like Ocado, eg Beer Hawk selection pack. I guess because these are just supplied to stock a shop they are about 60% BeerCo and 40% slightly more interesting.  I was just echoing that it's pretty fun trying a complete selection from one single brewery anyway, so why not work your way through them.
