just finished watching arlington road - really enjoyed it, ending was a genuine surprise, also a bit depressing

The film was good: went a bit flat in the middle, picked up again, but I didn't quite buy the end.

I can see why it should work. I can see why you might think it was clever. But just like Bridges was "forced" to get the car under the FBI building like a magician "forces" you to pick the card he wants, I felt like the movie was "forcing" me to accept that as an ending. And I just thought, emotionally, I could see the magician doing some funny business with the cards. I lost my suspension of disbelief, and I was suddenly aware I was watching a movie again. It's not that I can really pick holes in it, although it seems a bit of a risky plan for the terrorists to construct. I felt like I could see the script writers working: a bit like the ending of Se7en which I also found strangely unsatsifying

Bridges finds loads of evidence that Robbins isn't who he says he is, and was arrested as a teenager for a pipe bomb at a government office after they bankrupted his father, who then killed himself. Eventually, Robbins guesses what he's been up to and confronts him, saying he should have come to him about it. Robbins convinces Bridges that he's reformed, and Bridges decides he was being paranoid thinking he was a terrorist. But then Bridge's girlfriend sees Robbins and his gang doing terrorist stuff, she runs, but they've spotted her. She makes it to a phone and leaves a message for Bridges, saying his suspicions are true. Robbin's wife appears behind her, and they have a conversation where they icily pretend nothing is wrong, but both know what's happening. Cut to Bridges watching the TV news. His girlfriend's car has crashed. SHe's been killed. He's devastated. His neighbours support him. They send both kids off to a scout camp. Bridges receives a call from his FBI mate, but he realises that an earlier phone message from the FBI guy must have been deleted from his machine: perhaps along with a message from his girlfriend. He's being watched and his phone is tapped by the gang. He visits the father of the St Louis "lone" suicide bomber. He sees a picture of Robbin's kid at Scout Camp with the bomber: the evidence he's wanted that Robbins has been behind it all. He tries to get his kid from camp, but Robbins has already taken him. They confront each other. I saved your son's life! That's why you're still alive. How many people are you going to kill? If you don't keep your mouth shut, just one: your son. Bridges tries to live a normal life as the plan goes on, to save his son. He tells the FBI agent that it was all in his head, as the terrorists watch. The agent tells him that phone records show he recieved a call from a mall before his girlfriend died. Bridges finds the gangs hideout with that clue, and sees them loading a van with explosives. Robbins and Bridges fight. Robbins is going to attack the FBI. Bridges wins the fight, and pursues the van in his car. He sees his son in the back. He tries to warn his friend to evacuate the building, and he pursues the van. At the gate, security lets the van into the FBI underground car parks. Bridges is shouting crazily: a bomb in the van! But they don't believe him. He drives through the barrier into the car park, pursued by agents. His FBI mate tells them not to shoot. He shows the crazed Bridges the van. It's empty. "They're authorised to be here. The van's clean. It's OK. The only one who isn't authorised to be here is you. " Cut to Bridges face. He realises. He runs to his own car, opens the trunk. A bomb. It explodes. Cut to TV news of carnage. 180 dead, including Bridge's friend. Thought to be the act a lone suicide bomber, Bridges, obsessional after FBI blunders killed his wife. Interviews with his students tell of his obsession with terrorist atrocities and the death of his wife. FBI not looking for anybody else. Bridge's son goes to live with relatives. Robbins and his wife, on the lawn of their house, with a "For Sale" sign outside. "Let's move somewhere... safe, this time"
