(Gabrielknight @ Nov 17 2004, 02:06 AM)(GS) ok hands up who even knew this was a Footlose (Ross,1984, US) Parody when Kevin Bacon teaches Chris Penn to dance, geez surrounded by kids.

It was also from Dirty Dancing as im so told by my lovely wife who insisted i wouldnt find this bit funny since ive seen neither, having just watched said scenes from said film i must admit it, it did make it funnier, however the show i think was great. I watched that Peter Kay Thing on dvd the other day and didnt find it funny, Phoenix Nights series 1 was funny But series 2 was even better and IMO Max and Paddy, two of the better characters are even better when not being tied to the front of a club door.

P.s I knew the girl that told paddy to F*** Off In the club, how good is that?? ;)

yeah, its the same with phoenix nights, constant referances to stuff from the 80's. to be honest if your under the age of 22 I doubt youl get most of the jokes.

I don't know. It depends just how obscure the stuff is. If someone would only find it funny because they experienced it, then, I guess you are right. TV programmes in particular I suppose would come under that, simply because they aren't accessable anymore.

But it's not as if people only know about the decades they've lived through. If that were true, the Godfather wouldn't continue to find new audiences, The Beatles' albums would have stopped selling decades ago, no one under the age of 24 would know who Margaret Thatcher was etc. I think a lot of the jokes still work well for people who didn't live through that era, though I'm sure some of it will pass by unnoticed. I haven't seen Footloose, so I didn't notice that reference, but I still found the dancing funny. Maybe it's just a case of how self involved/cultured (for lack of a better word) you are.

Anyway. Just thought I'd mention that this is on in an hour, and, given someone mentioned earlier that the mighty reviewing power that is HEAT gave this episode five stars, I'm most looking forward to it.

Even though the gag was painfully obvious, actually seeing the 'chocolate factory' was funny. Apart from that and a few one liners my chuckle gland was dormant. Maybe Spikey and Fitzmaurice should have been hauled in as co-writers.

Kinda looks like they had a great deal to do with the Phoenix Nights magic.

It certainly looks like that so far.

Pulling a couple of characters out of a successful show and giving them their own series rarely works. Still, at least we have the Boycie and Marlon show to look forward to.

Christ.

Trouble is, the bit where I Was beginning to get interested was when they showed the flash back from the club. I was hoping we'd get more Potter, a Potter without a wheelchair.

Yeah, that little section really worked 'Los Alamos' in their techno, techno, techno phase, Potter running around, the clothing and hairstyles. It worked quite well.

Could that be a glimpse of Potter : The Early Years?

a bit like the Star Wars Prequels..

Had that in That Peter Kay Thing - where we saw The Neptune before and during the burning down. And Potter jumping out of his wheelchair.

As for this episode of M&P - I loved the mullet/shell suit/midget combo at the funfair, and potter jumping up on stage complete with trademark light grey suit and cutting remarks at Young Kenny.

'Techno, techno' was genius.

The first half was fairly dire I thought, apart from Magnet and Steel and the chinese/yellow felt tip pen joke.

But the second half really was fantastic. If they can keep that standard up throughout the rest of the series, I'll be most pleased. Can't help but agree about the acting though. They just don't interact in the same natural way that they used to while stood on the door in Phoenix Nights. Seems quite forced and wooden so far.

Spoilers please, its not on S4C til 10:30

You shouldn't come and read the thread until afterwards then - like how when I miss it on Friday I don't read the thread until I've seen the repeat on Tuesday. Doing otherwise is just asking for trouble.

But sorry anyway - hope it didn't spoil too much.

Oh, it did ruin things. Cheers.

It's not a spoilers thread, dimmy.
