Yeah, it was proper Black Hawk Down stuff - It'll probably be one of my clearest memories of Halo 2 in months to come. For some reason it felt more intense than usual. We were definitely outclassed, yet we put up a great fight. I think it's the fact that the whole team was grouped together most of the time trying to hold them off and get an offensive going. Getting a triple kill in the middle of it all was one of the most satisfying things ever!

Funnily I have had two of my fave games on collosus. One was a slayer game, were again we were backed into a corner, but we defended the two approaches to us really well with some great comms between the team "red side" "Blue side" etc.

The other was a game of oddball where the little gits tried to cheat us by using the air lift, we eventually got the ball and managed to get him (Harlen I think) in a corner at the bottom and defend him ruthlessly to rack up at least a consecutive 2 or 3 mins to win the game.

Talking of Oddball, I may as well ask now, what the hell is the "lowball" game type on the Bungie playlist?

That will help with the upcoming clan match :P

I did say we would join them later.

I mentioned it in case my reply caused you a change of heart. I was hoping to get on tonight but the gf is still ill, off work and demanding. I'm just fulfilling my obligation as team grumpy old man and I'd be miffed if I couldn't practice with my teammates on the eve of the compo. It's all moot, I can't.

Your assumption is that the others will wait til later.

I'm sure I'll just take my frustrations out on the opposition, on thursday, by killing them. DIE!, DIE!!!, DIII-IIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!!

To be fair I do feel bad the four of us practicing together, but it was the only night we could all do it, after our last attempt was when I managed to get locked out my house!

But if the other players are around I am more than happy for them to steal Phil away, Im even happy to provide myself as target practice.

But nothing is arranged on here so none of them very well may be on at all tonight anyway?

I'm on in a while.

After I go to the gym.

Received some bad news today - my management cert. course has been cancelled so it's looking like every Thurs night I'll be out of action completely from next week onwards as I have to move from the day course to the evening one :(

It was either move or drop the course completely and get a refund - halfway through the damn thing :P

The thing is we very almost shafted them because of it as they had three guys outside our base and we had the bomb just outside theirs. I reckon we were one sword swipe away from a dramatic equaliser.

I actually managed to get in there and begin arming it twice with only 2-3 seconds to go on each attempt but got wiped out :P

At this rate you will be able to carry your TV yourself to RSVP for the next Bath Meet :(

My problems explained, at least now we know. From the Bungie weekly update...

The Bungie Weekly What's Update is a weekly forum to answer Halo 2 players' most pressing and urgent questions. Lots of info can be found HERE , regarding more frequently encountered issues, but this feature serves as a more organic, interactive forum. Note that we will answer questions that we have clear distinct answers to, as soon as we have answers. Nobody wants to read, "I don't know." As the answer to a question, after all.

Update: Ask and ye will receive. I just got a long and detailed explanation of the "Network Error" message as it relates to failed game invitations and I've done my best to explain it clearly below.

Dozens of you asked,

Sometimes when I try to accept a party invite, I get a blue screen with an error message saying something about, 'Sorry, we're having network troubles." What are these troubles, exactly?

One of the reasons players will sometimes encounter the infamous "We're experiencing network problems" message when trying to accept a party invitation is NAT type incompatibility. This unfortunately is one of the ways we ensure good, solid connections and is unavoidable. Below is a somewhat dry explanation of what a NAT type is, but before you lull yourself to sleep ? here's a possible solution ? it works for us quite often.

If an invitation fails, you can try to get a NAT compatible host or player to start a brand new party then have everyone join him instead. When everyone rejoins this new party they simply have to keep their fingers crossed that a new host can invite the failed invitee successfully. It's annoying, but it's usually for someone who's worth the extra effort.

How do you know who this host will be? In many cases, simply having an excellent connection ? a T3 line for example, will often ensure hosting duties and compatibility, but there's no surefire way to know. One other solution, which is less drastic, is to start a custom game and then immediately quit and start again ? Halo 2 will always try to find a best-case host, and that may fix the invitation failure by auto selecting a new, better host.

Again, we wish there was a way around this, but it happens at the router level and it happens on other systems and games. The reason we don't identify the host is obvious to anyone who's suffered through other forms of router and modem-related cheating.

NAT is an acronym for "Network Address Translation" and is also known as Network masquerading or IP-masquerading. This is a technique in which the IP addresses of network packets are rewritten as the packets pass through a router or firewall. This technique is used to enable multiple hosts on a network to access the internet using only one IP address. Now, even though routers aren't really supposed to do this, sometimes they do anyway, since it's a very convenient little trick. The problem is that this incompatibility in NAT types causes communication problems between hosts, and that's where the "Network Problems" message is encountered.

We should note that other factors can contribute to this problem, but NAT type is the main culprit.

Thats nonsense, as you can start a game, and press right on the D-pad to find out who the host is. Their icon above their head will flash blue.

Edit: Everyone must press right, including the host I meant. If the host isnt pressing right, no-one will know who it is.

Eh, are they sure? This is exactly what most broadband routers are meant to do. Anyway, gives me an idea what to do about it, although its going to be a serious pain in the arse. If anyone wants more info, this is quite enlightening :

In a seriously annoying kinda way.
