Horror Recommendations

I'm looking for a very specific sort of horror flick. It needs to be stylish, relatively modern and available in the Romford branch of HMV. The one next to Tammy and opposite Phones 4 U.

I went to see the remake of The Grudge the other night, and I freely admit it scared the shit-faced Christ out of me. So I'm after something similar, with nightmarish visuals and lots of those corner-of-your-eye frights that the Japanese seem to be quite good at.

I don't want anything resembling a slasher flick. Blood and guts doesn't frighten me, and I usually get bored quite quickly. So I suppose I'm after a real gem of a traditional ghost story.

Either that, or something of a style similar to Jacob's Ladder: high on surrealism and demons and all that shit.

Thanks!

I suppose it all depends on what you like, as mentioned above you have the foreign films like;

The Eye

Dark Water

Old Boy

Ju-On

A Tale of Two Sisters

Or you have the classics like The Shinning & Misery which never really age, still competes with the best of them.

You really need to look at Region free players and Online purchases – Example why, Tale of Two Sisters aint out in the UK and when it does I bet HMV/Virgin will charge £20. CD-Wow is charging £6.99 for the R3 and it is available now, this is becoming more common on CD-Wow, even with the Hollywood Blockbusters.

Dark water was a bit crap imo. Just really not scary or tense at all (ooh it's water, watch out)and ummm then there was "that bit", which i won't go into for now. But man that bit sucked and took the movie down at least 3 stars(out of 10) in my opinion.

I give it a 4 <_<

I have audition and Kairo here waiting to be watched, I might watch one of them tonight actually. I'm leaning more towards The Eye at the moment(mainly because the cover of kairo looks shit)

Edit: I also have Audition but have been putting off watching it because it looked more like a weird or visually disturbing kind of movie than one thats actually scary.

The eye is decent enough, and has some very scary bits, but kinda loses it towards the end.

I've heard mixed things about Dark Waters, some people love it, some think it's a big pile of shit.

Kairo is ok, but doesnt really make much sense, and is really quite disjointed

A tale of two sisters is out on monday, and by all accounts is very good. I'll be watching it monday night.

Have you seen the Others? I thought it was a brilliant ghost story, easily the scariest I've seen since the original Haunting. Which is also well worth watching, unlike the remake, which is pap.

I have mixed feelings about Dark Water.

It was subtle, beautifully shot and actually quite moving, but the denouement and everything that follows is so bewildering and stupid I nearly turned it off.

Oh, and to echo everyone else's thought: the damp patches are not the least bit creepy. Nor do they work as a portent of doom. I actually laughed during one of the first of many shots of them, when the last drop of water hit the floor. It was such a ridiculous scene.

Mitsuko, until she suddenly decides she's Sadako's little sister, is equal parts tragic and frightening. The occasional glimpses Yoshimi catches of her are all handled well, and the first elevator scene is brilliant. It's also easy to sympathise with her, until the final scenes.

It feels like Hideo Nakata had a change of heart towards the end of the script. It's like he didn't quite have the nerve to make a touching, twee ghost story about a little girl that misses her mother, so he stuck in a bit of Ring towards the climax.

Six out of ten.

I hope The Eye is better.

They cost me £20. God.

I've pimped this before, but I'll pimp it again.

The Eye for HK$40. (About £2.85)

Dark Water for HK$30. (About £2.15)

Stacks more on there if you're getting into this sort of thing, Crispin.

Any reason you want your local store to have them, or are you just one of these impatient, impulsive types that all the celebrities are talking about?

I haven't, no, but I've seen Repulsion, which is another of Roman Polanski's horror movies. That was quite disturbing. So I may well give it a look.

I wouldn't bother with Suspiria. It's incoherent crap. All the performances are well below average, the gore effects have aged terribly, the dialogue is just shy of absurdist and hits that middle ground between absolute drivel and really weird. But it's very stylish, and no one's allowed to criticise Dario Argento, apparently.

I'll watch The Eye today! The trailer reel on Dark Water actually reminded me just how creepy Ring is. I'd forgotten a lot of that movie, especially the scene when Reiko climbs down the well. The tension was killing me when I first saw that.

Ring is possibly my favourite horror film of all time. I love Halloween/The Fog?American Werewolf for altogether different reasons, but Ring is just such an incredible film. The first time I watched it I enjoyed it without being creeped until the very end - that night I was looking at the TV from my balcony and gettinig serously spooked. It was only on subsequent viewings I was able to appreciate just how brilliant the pacing of it is. Where it shocks, it does so without equal because the rest of the time you're watching a thriller. Every time I've watched it since I've marvelled at the pacing, the acting, the subtle story and the fact that you have to fill in so many of the blanks for yourself. It's an absolute masterpiece of low budget cinema - nothing made in the west comes close IMO.
