Issue 25 of GamesTM has been out a few weeks now, but with the run-up to Christmas I've found myself snowed under with all manner of bits and pieces, hence the rather delayed posting of my usual GamesTM Retro section lowdown.

If you can tear yourself away from the gorgeous cover of the main magazine, and flick through to the retro section, you'll be greeted by a wonderful Oliver Frey artwork of the Titanic sinking. Why? Well, this issue's main Retro feature is "Retro Goes to the Movies" where a number of good and bad movie to home computer titles are given the once over.

Here's the contents in full...

  • Retro News - Darran Jones' obsession with OutRun 2, New retro game show hits the internet, news of more Cronosoft titles on their way, More SNK titles head for the PS2, The UK Music Charts Nov 1991, Mega Drive Games Your Were Playing in 1991
  • Retro Diary - Forthcoming dates of interest
  • Classic Loading Screens - Gemini Wing (Spectrum)
  • Website of the Month - The Mean Machines Archive
  • Fanzine Corner - Retro Review
  • Straight From The Horses Mouth - Philip Oliver (Dizzy)
  • The £50 Challenge - Castlevania; Symphony of the Night (and others)
  • Clash of the Titans - Roadblasters
  • Retro Goes to the Movies - Six page feature on games based on movies
  • Classic Machine - Virtual Boy (3 page feature)
  • The Bastard Son of ... - Renegade III
  • Haven't we met Before? - Rampage/Ramparts
  • Greatest Retro Game Ever - Sonic The Hedgehog (Megadrive)
  • Great Retro Gaming Moments - Barbarian "off with his head"
  • Great Game Bosses - Darth Vader in Super Empire Strikes Back
  • Games That Time Forgot - Snakem Rattle `n Roll (NES)
  • Unsung Heroes - Frank Gasking of the Games That Weren't homepage
  • Retrospective - Dan Clapson (Commando, Chips Challenge, Back to The Future II)
  • Retro Contact - Two pages of readers letters
  • Classic Console Buyers Guide Quick Reference
  • Games Trading Market - Classifieds
  • The Ultimate Collection - Super Quincy follows on from me and shows that retro gamers have no hair

Personal favourite sections of this month for me have to be the "Clash of the Titans", which pits Spectrum, Amstrad and C64 versions of Atari's `Roadblasters` against each other. Only one format has the winning title.

"The Bastard Son of..." this month looks at the terrible Renegade 3. After the wonderful Renegade and Target: Renegade, how could the third game in the series be so bad?

In this month's "Ultimate Collection" forumite Super Quincy takes us on a photographic short tour of his stash, and tells us a bit about his collecting habits, as well as revealing that his gf helps out in collecting. Nice to see another retro collector with a serious lack of hair (like myself). Perhaps RichM was a blip on an otherwise bald collectors landscape?

I'll write more later, but thought I'd get the ball rolling.

Views/opinions anyone? What did you think of this issue's Retro?

Rob

This was probably my favourite section of the magazine this month.

What won it for me was the mini-reminiscence and accompanying screen shot, not dissimilar to this one:

batman.jpg

Brings me back to a time when the Amiga first graced my house. It was like a dream come true (REAL LIFE GRAPHICS! Oh, the wonder...). And the Batman Pack was the choice of the time.

As I recall, this game was fantastic with great variance between the speedy racing sections (never have graphics looked so apt; so crisp but dark and appealing at the same time) and the grappling hook platforming sections. The inclusion of this game evokes great memories and, worry not, this game will be added to the 'Must Play' list when I finally get the ol' Xbox 'upgraded'.

Great Work, GamesTM.

Which should be the megadrive version ............

I still think that both Batman the Movie and Robocop 3 on the Amiga are excellent film-based titles and put games like Catwoman and Enter the Matrix to shame. As for GamesTM, well, I have never actually read an issue, the only gaming magazine I read is, suprisingly, EDGE.

Website of the Month - The Mean Machines Archive

as pimped by me here first! ;)

BTW when did game stop selling fecking games magazines (they only stock there own magazine the monopolising gits)

I went to try and by GamesTM today in GAME and couldnt find it (as they dont do mags now) (btw way strider thats the only reason i buy gamesTm, the retro section makes me feel all warm and fuzzy).

edit hold on a minute does Rob write the retro section or does strider, or are you both the same person.

Indeed, sadly it doesn't fit in with my '8-bit computers facing off against each other' theme :o

Not long till your feature mate :D

I'm just a biased Sega fanboy.....

Yeah, looking forward to it, my mum'll be buying a copy... ;-)

;) That Rengade III feature made me laugh. I remember being absolutly addicted to Target rengade on my spectrum the two player was fecking awsome, I think I then went back to Renegade and finished it. If I remember correctly the last fight scene in Renegade was against a bunch of geezers brandishing cut-throat razors in a barbers shop and if they hit you you were dead straight away, Im remembering snooker/pool cues for some reason as well? Anyways Renegade III comes along and its total shit, such a let down after the first two classics. Im sure I made it to level two because I can remember the mummies, how the hell I got to level 2 is a mystery. That full page Ad is wicked!

I've read some of the Retro section, brings back some rather dusty memories

Best section of the Magazine for me.

Glad you're enjoying the section mate. I love writing it and it's always great to hear when people enjoy reading through it.

I'm quite surprised there's been no complaints about the article's title though
