http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...8206665-5127010 - this month's essential Cure purchase

I already recommended these two sexy pieces of deluxe packaging, exploding with bonus tracks, in another thread, so it would be rude not to repeat it here. If you're looking to buy an album by either of those two bands, then these have got to be high up on your list, although in all honesty it might be better to wait for the other forthcoming Cure re-issues - i.e. Pornography, Disintegration and Head on the Door. Three Imaginary Boys isn't all that 'rock'. I also like Wish a lot - is it such a crime? But, really, unless you're not bothered about special editions, now isn't the best time to start building your Cure collection.

And if it's rock you want, you'll have to give the latest Manics album a miss, even though 1985 and To Repel Ghosts are the best things they've done this side of the millennium. But when it comes to a bit o' Manics rockage, the US mix (nae Canadian to bootleggers/downloaders) of The Holy Bible, which is included on the new edition, is the biggest fat mutha of a bitch the Manics ever did. There's always Generation Toerrorists, but the production on that gets on my tits and, like THB, it really needs a remastered release. Also, the digipak of Lipstick Traces is currently available in Fopp for a bargaintastic £5. As is the majority of the Cure/Manics back catalogue minus this year's releases at the moment.

Although I wouldn't want to speak for the person who started this thread, I must have missed the post where he asked for Hardcore/Emo recommendations.

Punk is a genre of huge scope. Hardcore music is pretty much part of it. Don't know if this is a good or bad thing though.

Hardcore recommendations (stuff that's been doing it for me lately):

Negative Approach - Tied down

Brutal, ugly stuff.

Stalag 13 - In Control

Awesome early 80's proto-type thrash (they have some goofy metal solos going on but it's mostly hardcore)

JFA - Skate Punk vol 4.

Good compilation of their early stuff, great off-kilter hardcore with a couple of cool surf instrumentals thrown in for good measure.

What Happens Next - Stand Fast Armegeddon Justice Fighter

fucking awesome 80's thrashcore throwbacks... Split up a few years back sadly

In Control - Breaking the Curse

Cheesy as hell but cool late 80's hardcore throwbacks, sounds kind of straightedge but I get the impression they're not. Lyrics like: "We're not down with that emo shit / Give me a fast snare beat and a circle pit!" and "H...A...R...D...C...O...R...E... (repeat over and over for comedy effect). Should key you in to what's going on here.

Poison Idea - Feel The Darkness

Stupidly metal. Like all good hardcore, threatening, but faintly comedic.

Tragedy - Vengenance

Awesome crust/metal-hardcore, dark, epic, almost (ALMOST) melodic stuff.

As for punk:

first three Ramones albums at least one of them on a daily basis. Repeat till death.

Nodes of Ranvier

A Perfect Circle

Tool

Coheed and Cambria

Avenged Sevenfold

Slayer

Opeth

Nodes of Ranvier are the best band ever. The new album can't come soon enough.

I just can't believe so many people into the type of music they play have no idea who they are. Yet everyone who likes what they do when played it are blown away.

Its awesome, angry, beautiful music. It should be forced upon all.

Riff After Riff is a stonkingly good Wildhearts album, if only for Lake of Piss, Stormy in the North and O.C.D.

No-one should ever listen to FFAF under any circumstances whatsoever.

I really quite like FFAF.....

I mean, their early stuff is great. The newer stuff is the kind of thing that can get people into hardcore music. No bad thing really. Good live too.

They really don't do anything for me. I've heard a million and one bands like them.

Its Paddy you bum.

I have to say I didn't take to the Riverdales album as much as the Face to Face stuff.  Except Mentally Retarded which I like  :D

A few tracks I like a lot just now:

The Walkmen The Rat

Von Bondies Cmon Cmon

The Donnas Who Invited You and Take it Off

sorry man, "Zoltar" threw me.

I got the newest Asian Kung Fu Generation album, Solfa, it is very impressive. I also saw them live a few weeks ago, it was good fun.

I know. Kerraig made me get the album (the second one) and I keep forgetting how amazing the whole album is. Then I stick it on and it blows me away.

One of those little classics that for some reason is nowhere near as popular as it should be. The lyrics (on the whole) are quite beautiful too.

Anyone here must get this album.

Oh yeah - is the first album any cop?

Ooh, I saw them in Bristol last night. Very, VERY impressive stuff. An amazingly tight performance, and some mental moves from the guitarist and singer. Also: no faffing about with bloody encores. Hooray!

I saw Dillinger and Poison the Well, totally amazing. Actually enjoyed PTW more to be honest. Just really perfect sound. Hadn't seen them before so it was a good experiece. Dillinger was similar to last time, mental!

The first Nodes Record (as in first full length) is pretty phat. I listened to it yesterday and was loving it still. Its not quite as polished as the first but well worth a look. Opening track is a classic.

Check out the new Facedown DVD, they have 3 live tracks on it. And buy the Comeback Kid CD while you're at it ;)

Get some 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Royal Society is pretty fine. If pirates made music, it'd sound like that. Like musical ale.

22-20s by the 22-20s: catchy blues-rock stuff, nice electric slide guitar playing, easy to listen to. Like musical lager.

Polythene by Feeder: my favourite album ever, and the one where they sounded their least over-produced. Chunkier than their current output might suggest.

The first four Black Sabbath albums are essential listening for anyone who likes rock, utterly seminal.

Bad Religion are the forerunners of the modern melodic punk scene, so if you like anything like pennywise/screeching weasel/millencolin/NOFX (all of whom I recommend) you should check them out. They have a huge back catalogue (formed in 1980 iirc) so their All Ages compilation may be a good starting point.

For modern punk particularly I would suggest buying label samplers. Fat Wreck Chords and Hellcat and lots of others do them, they are cheap (£5?) and have a selection of different bands from their roster on them. They give you a cross sample of a genre(s), and help you to work out which bands you want to hear more of easily.

Oh, and listen to Jack, The Wildhearts are the best rock band the world has ever produced.
