Just picked all of mine up. Such a sexy bit of kit.

Can't believe I just spent nearly five hours in the freezing cold when some poeple rocked up when the store opened and purchased one on the spot. :D

Where did you pick up yours from then? And how many did they let you buy?

To be fair, though, the way you put it was as though Sony had coined the term. You're going to be dealing with comments like that for at least a few pages yet.

I reccomend Deloreans. Everybody loves it when you post one of those to inform them that they're behind the times.

He's got a point, you know.

Sorry if it's been shown already...

Now, the age old battery question: have any of the lucky bastards with an early PSP measured battery life yet? I'm still waiting on that info, because while I heard the "only 2 hours if you have the backlight on full" rumour, I'm not going to believe it until any of the websites post some sort of official word on battery life.... so anyone got a link for me?

Sony did announce the battery life. They said 4-5 hours for movies, 4-6 hours for games with volume 2/4, screen brightness medium.

Recently people have got their hands on the PSP and have put it through the rungs for movies and music.

You'll be happy to know that at least for music the PSP lasts a honorable amount of time. Anyway, here's the impressions from this guy (complete with pics)...

//Start:

at 8:30, he left home for school with the psp (battery fully recharged during the night before) and listened to mp3 all the way untill he arrived at school at around 9:30. he then checked the battery in the menu: it said "91%. estimated remaining mp3 playback time: 9 hours."

he then watch movie from memory stick for around 40 mins in his class and then checked the battery again: "80%, estimated remaining movie playback time 4 hours". he said he paused the movie and checked the battery several times during that 40 mins (he did that too during the 1h of mp3 playback) and based on his observation, playing movies consuming the battery at least twice as fast as playing mp3.

he then showed off his new psp among his classmates. everyone awed and cam.

he listened to mp3 during his 1-hour home trip again. he watched movie for around 10 mins during that time. after he arrived home, he checked the battery again: 73%.

he said the mp3s sound much better on his psp than on his ipod.

//end

here is the thread where he posted his impression on psp mp3 and movie playback. it's all chinese but at least there are some nice pics. based on his comments, i can see that the age of porn-under-school-desks is coming! :D

That's his first impressions.

Then he timed it with actual clocks.

1. they've been using a japanese mp4 convertor called "変換君" (basically means "convertor" in japanese) which can convert many different formats (avi' date=' mpeg 2, etc) into mp4 format that the psp recoganizes. Then with some additional tools like Realone decoder and MainConcept MPEG Encoder, you can convert many formats that the 変換君 does not support before (rm, rmvb, etc). There are detailed instructions on that chinese board teaching you how to convert different types of movies

2. he has vid of his psp playing an MTV he converted. guess what song it is... (tip: very related to NDS... ) http://channelj.tgfcer.com/DorimagaDVD/MOV01283.avi (it would be very nice if someone could mirror that movie 'cause that is his personal website and i don't how much traffic it can handle.)

here are some pic of his psp playing another MTV:

He did another test on battery life. He let his fully recharged PSP played one of the movies on the demo UMD disc repeatly until it ran out of battery and shut down automatically. Screen max brightness. Volume 3/4. It lasted for 4 hours 20 mins.

Sony did announce the battery life.  They said 4-5 hours for movies, 4-6 hours for games with volume 2/4, screen brightness medium.

Not to be pedantic (pedantic? moi?), but they actually said "4-6 hours games, 4-5 hours movies, with volume 2/4, headphones plugged in, and battery life set to minimum and maximum", which makes me think that it was 4 hours with max brightness and 5/6 hours with min.

Edit- either that, or they put the PSP into a quantum superimposition of the two screen brightness states.

Gamespot have tried it with "various games" and got around 6 hours each time, too.

So, 4 hours for movies, 6 for games. SCORE!

BUT MY BUS RIDE IS 10 HOURS! HOW WILL I COPE?!

I am, surprisingly, lying. My bus ride is not ten hours. I don't actually have a bus ride. Merely a lingering sense of needing to belong...

*thinks*

I'm probably actually going to have to charge my PSP twice a week if I use one a reasonable amount of the time. That's actually about as bad as my wonkey phone and crummy Ni-Cd CD player. A spare battery may be in order.

I pre purchased 4 from Yamada without any hassles, they even gift wrapped them for me. No line up to pick them up this morning, nice and easy. I pre purchased 3 from Kojima. Got them this week without a hassle.

Toys R Us was a different story. That's where I was from 5:30 this morning. Could have got there so much later as I ended up being the first there. I initially thought that there were 3 other people in the line but they were cleaning and security staff from You Me Town. Ended up getting 2 from Toys R Us. Guy on the phone next to me got a phone call from a freind who was at a Tors R Us in Tokyo. It was apparantly chaos! Not living in Tokyo has its benefits. :D

I havn't even played mine yet.

Cheers

I believe. While I wouldn't normally indulge in something like extra rechargable batteries for a handheld system, the flight from Tokyo to San Francisco is around nine or ten hours in length. So yeah, I'll need at least one spare

..or fly Emirates and plug the thing in to the mains.

On the whole battery life thing. People over at the GA forums have reported that the battery when fully charged will last for about 5 hours without a game in. With a game in then obviously that will reduce. There are still no firm posts on exactly how much the battery will last.
