Pokemon Blue

being an emulation whore, i've managed to play all three generations of handheld pokemon [i did red, then gold, then ruby] and gave up during them all through lack of patience. however, i don't really know why, i started a new game of pokemon blue recently, and jesus christ if it isn't amazing. i don't think i ever appreciated the simplicity of it without having played ruby [too fucking overcomplicated. berries? contests? 10348 pokemon? give. a. shit.].

anyway that was a rant, and i actually just started this thread to head if you had any fun pokemon nicknames. how teenage am i, eh?

anyway, my hard-as-fucking-nails squad is CHARLIE the drowzee, KASPAR-V the gyarados, B REX the ivysaur, H-DGES the sandshrew, P.I.M.P. the geodude, and -VE the pikachu.

dammit am i drunk.

I had a Jeremy Weedle who, brilliantly and unexpectedly, turned into Jeremy Beedrill.

Oh and a Kakuna called Stiffy who I left at the gym only to return and be told "Your Stiffy has grown a lot!"

Happy days.

oh man, you win

that was awesome

edit: i was mainly laughing at the beadle joke: i wouldn't want anyone to think i laughed at peurile stiffy jokes

Ahh the pokemon games are amazing, well red/blue are because I havent played the others yet really. You really should get them on a gameboy its totally different and half the game is the battles/trading

i'm sure that's half the game, but i'm happy with half a game: nobody, and i mean nobody i know, has a game boy and pokemon, sadly.

i'm in it for the 1P: i am prepared to accept the lack of social interaction, for i have not paid the monetary price for my gaming pleasures. i repent! i repent! i am a ROMster! it's free, but the taste is that little less sweet! oh my! forgive me, kinky father!

You are a pirate.

How much does a gameboy and pokemon cost? Well i'll tell you.

Gamestation. Gameboy Pocket = £9.99, Pokemon Red/Blue (unboxed) = £6.99

£16.98 Isn't really a lot of money for the machine and the game, is it? Plus you can take it wherever you like, and trade with people if you find them.

I found that too. Loved Blue (back in the dark days of 1998), was happy enough to help my brother get through Yellow, but when I moved out to Silver, I just became over-whelmed by the whole thing. Ended up selling the game after ten hours of play. I've been put off Pokemon games forever now. <_<

I loved red/blue - they were perfectly formed imo, yet silver, gold, crystal, ruby, sapphire etc just seemed to go over the top, adding unnessecary elements which confused and crowded rather than helped the gameplay.

I remember back in 98 when I first got my hands on a copy of red, along with a bunch of friends who ordered at the same time - we played it for months on end - traded monsters, battled each other in the playground, it was brilliant. One of the the best games i've ever played, and it still holds up today. It's just a shame nintendo had to milk the franchise to the nth degree.

I think Gold was the high point of the series- Sapphire was ridiculously complicated. Non-obvious types and stupid 'abilities' that you're unaware of until it's too late.

But Red, I have to say, is still my second-favourite game ever- 180 hours can't be wrong. In fact it was the very first US game I imported, and well worth it.

Pokemon Red was the only [pokemon] game Id ever bothered playing. Me and my mate bought a copy each (me red, him blue).

Also it came out in October 1st 1999.

I played it for several hours, but never got too far. My mate beat his, and i believe beat yellow and played silver etc.

I think i got given one of the newer ones too, its in a silvery-blue type cartridge. Never played though.

it may be £16.98 but it's still £16.98 that i don't even almost have

don't get me wrong, i'd love a gameboy.

Had blue on import from the US (all the cool kids had blue) way before it came popular over here. Had 3 separate games, the last one was me getting all 151. My finest gaming achievement. I recently played Pokemon Fire Red (/Leaf Green), which is basically blue/red with colour, new islands, and annoying little nuances fixed. It's perfect. I mean, better than blue. It's brilliant.

Highly, highly recommended.

I've just been tempted to get hold of a copy of fire red/leaf green for this xmas. How similar actually is it to the originals?

It's basically a straight remake, with some of the (better) Pokemon from Gold/Silver, and extra islands you go visit (which is about an extra 5 hrs of gameplay, I reckon). Little bugs are fixed, the colour adds LOADS to the experience, and I won't spoil it but very early on they put something new in that solves a very annoying problem.

It's been tuned to perfection.

Buy it.

What difference does it make? Nintendo wouldn't get a penny from the second hand sale.

You're right, let's go and pirate all the games in gamestations second hand section eh?

Becuase their respective publishers/developers won't get a penny out of a secondhand sale...

Why not?

I can understand why people will want to experience them as they were intended, but there is no moral reason why you should.

If the company isn't producing the game any more, they won't care if you pirate it or buy it second hand. They get zip from it.

Weird.
