Why Do People Buy Games That Are Rubbish

There are no shit games.

There are, however, games that you personally do not enjoy. This does not make them shit.

Everyone has, at some point, enjoyed a game that those "in the know" claimed was shit.

The end.

Wrong, americas most wanted is complete shit. I challenge anyone in the world to play that abortion and enjoy it. They can't, it's beyond bad.

In your opinion.

Example: I hated ICO. Is it crap because I didn't enjoy it?

I am sure many people enjoyed Americas Most Wanted. Much like many people probably enjoyed Driv3r, The Getaway and God knows what else that is supposed to be shit.

This urge to buy a midas game.

And one day i'm going to actually do it.

I can't help myself.

Buy A-Train 6. Supposed to be quite a fun game.

Or Freak Out, which isn't supposed to be so great but it's Treasure, so it can't be all bad.

Look Mum, I am in a thread full of elitist nonsense. :(

One mans Metroid Prime is another mans Timesplitters 2. Why the fuck do people not understand that? Yes, this is a discussion forum but threads like this are not discussion. This is just an extension of the ridiculous NFSU 2 thread that was full of crap and embarassing 'chav' assumptions.

See this is groundless too - because you have absolutely no basis for making this statement. Despite the endless stream of "mainstream" cack, we still get gems. And we always will. The fact that gaming is going more and more mainstream makes quality niche title more likely, not less, the bigger your audience, the more likely you are to take a risk.

er, no.

there have been no gems for about 5 years.

this year has seen some 'pretty good' games (Halo 2, San Andreas, Outrun 2) but nothing 'great', nothing that will still be played in 3 years' time. everything else, almost without exception, has been shit. in 2003, the closest anyone got to making a good game was F-Zero GX, and that wasn't as good as its predecessor. everything else was so bad that just playing the games became insulting.

gaming is on a downhill slope so steep as to be almost vertical. this is because people buy shit games, so why should anyone spend the time and money refining one of these game engines and producing something great?

and no, Shenmue doesn't blow my argument out of the water at all. if it ran at 15fps, had seriously unresponsive controls, a deep-voiced american announcer, commercial rock/dance music, an ice level, a volcano level, and had had no artistic attention paid to it at all, then it'd be bad. as it is, it achieves all its goals perfectly. anything it doesn't do, it didn't intend to do in the first place, and it's had unheard-of amounts of attention lavished upon it, to the point where it simply becomes a thing of beauty. that's what quality is.

now, go back and play America's Most Wanted :(

In your opnion! There have been plenty of Gems in that period, in my opinion.

This is what this debate is fundamentally about, because someone lables certain games as "shit" - Whilst others may just buy them and enjoy them. As for games that are still played 3 years from release, well those are few and far between regardless of the amount of mainstream releases.

I like the "seriously" disclaimer in the unresponsive controls part of Shenmue :(

Right, so if a game achieves its aims, it is by definition"good" then? So taking "007 everything or nothing" (or whatever the fuck it's called) as an example, it's aims are reproduce the Bond experience, which it does in spades. Is it then therefore "good" game because it achieves its objectives without slowdown?

The only qualification of a good game is this - "Did you enjoy it?" If the answer to that "yes" then it's good, and it doesn't matter if it runs at 120fps of 5fps, it doesn't matter whether the control are unresponsive or not. And it certainly doesn't matter if the concensus of opnion is that it is shite. If you enjoy it, it is by definition "good".

There is no such thing as a definitively "bad" game, because ultimatley, someone somewhere will enjoy it. Your average teenager will get far, far more out of something like NFSU/2 than, say PGR, or GT - because they can relate to it and it interests them.

does being able to relate to Rogue Agent really make it good? really?

everything or nothing doesn't achieve all its goals anyway. it's riddled with AI bugs, difficulty spikes, slowdowns and overly-scripted sections.

I don't that matters with 'that guy'.

I'm waiting for another rant on 'why Timesplitters 2 was completely shit because it's the universal truth' or so I've been hearing for a good while, regardless of getting lots of enjoyment out of it myself.

I reckon this argument about casuals buying shit games can run and run, that's the trouble. I would say that there are shit games (as in poorly made and unoriginal), but 'casuals' do not care as much as us. but do think alot of people are uninformed. clearly 'casual' gamers do not spend as much time researching and discussing games as enthusiasts. they are not as informed on gameplay quality and mechanics. it's not like everyone has played and discussed every single game and still chooses the Getaway. they shouldn't be seen as lesser people because they choose not to research/care as much, but it is a fact that they do not have as much knowledge on the subject.

as others have said, it's more about the theme or extra features for them.

and also about PCs, it's people's own fault if they don't ignore '733MHZ Gaming ACTION' claims and research the best parts for themselves. there clearly are differences in quality between PCs, and no doubt they would see a difference if they got a better one, but they didn't. so tough, but it's not your business anyway. :(

cock off. you don't think that there are quantifiable reasons why Halo is better than Rogue Agent? it's just a matter of opinion whether the shitnesses are endearing or not?

It allows my 13 year old to pretend to be Bond, better than any game out there, including Goldeneye. In that it achives its aims complete.y He does not give a flying fuck whether there is the odd bit of slowdown, or scripting.

And are you seriously going to tell me, given that slowdown is apparantly the root of all evil, that Shenmue doesn't suffer from it?

Didn't you ridicule me for using that exact same arguement about black metal in off topic a few weeks back? :(

there is very little slowdown in Shenmue (in the first one anyway), and since it isn't an action game aside from the occasional fight, the slowdown (which, incidentally, is a drop from 60fps to 30fps, which is what most games these days run at anyway) doesn't affect gameplay at all.

Stop talking sense, man!

threads like this make me cringe as well, TBH. You're all so much better than all the 'chavs' and 'casuals' out there.

I'm sure someone will have done this by the end of the thread, but of course there's shit games.

There's games which simply don't function as games, through bugs, crashes, assorted glitches and whatever.

By the way: applying a "Everything Subjective" argument here to say "Well, some people may like bugs" gets a biff on the nose from the missing-the-point-of-postmodernism police.

Well all this talk on a certain racing game got me thinking. Why do people buy games just because they feature a certain aspect even when the game engine is rubbish.

I mean i love South Park a hell of a lot, however i didn't go out and buy that shit FPS game or the bloody Mario Kart rip off because they were damn poor to play. Sure they featured some funny parts but that wasn't enough to get over the piss poor gameplay.

So with this racing game all you hear in it's defense is that you can mod cars. Sure you can mod cars, great. But erm you can't do anything fun with them because the game engine is dreadful. If it was average then yeah fine the premise can make an average game good, see Futurama for an example.

Nightfire was an average FPS but if you liked Bond it made it slightly better so there's another example. Oh and Battle for Middle Earth is another one.

I don't think anyone on here bought Goldeneye 2 so we'll never know what drove people to buy that but i'm interested in what games you bought that were shit. I know people who buy the racing game say because it's the best of a bad bunch. Well smelling shit is better than eating it or rubbing it on your eye. Still not gonna do it though.

So what sold you the game and if you carried on playing it then why when there are other games with way superior gameplay released at the same time.

I also like South Park but bought the games used for under £10 each, and i found that because i liked the show i forgave some of the small problems.

I think people go out and buy games because they know no better. Not everybody looks at reviews and a lot of the games opinions differ depending where you look at the review.

Offical console mags are not worthy bog paper, the main offender being the Nintendo one. They seam to have diffrent games to what are put out to buy in the shops sometimes.

While i have never read the offical Xbox or PS2 mags i heard they are the same.

I pine for the days of the offical Dreamcast mag most the time it was worth the asking price for the demo alone.

The strange thing about slow down is that most people are completely oblivious to it when it happens in a game they love. A good example is Halo, a game that many on this forum seem to think is a gift that comes direct from the Gods. It has some dreadful slowdown, especially on the final section of the last level where it seriously affects gameplay, but does anyone mention it? Ever?

And lets not forget the rose-tinted spectacles that so many here view N64 Goldeneye with.

Ok. I've got to admit something.

I've never told anyone this before so don't flame me or take this piss because this is a highly personal thing to me that not even my wife knows.

Sometimes, when i go shopping with her in Tesco's i get this urge.

This urge to buy a midas game.

And one day i'm going to actually do it.

I can't help myself.

Some of them aren't too bad. Though the Play-It range are better.

People actually think i'm joking.

THere are opinions and there is the truth. YOU WILL NOT GET ONE SECOND OF ENJOYMENT OUT OF THIS 'GAME' (Bar laughing at how brainwashingly distasteful it all is)
