Consolevania 5

Jesus.

Everyone moaning in this thread can fuck right off. Its free, constructed using the enthusiasm for games we all posess but can't use to actually construct something vaguely resembleing consolevania.

Fucking enjoy it, most of you will be hailing these episodes as the 'golden past' once CV appears on BBCthree which you will utterly contempt due to not being 'underground'.

Enjoy it now, enjoy it in the future.

Jesus.

You're so wrong.

As has been pointed out, it's constructive criticism. Free or not makes no odds.

I absolutely appreciate the time Big Lime et al put into it, it's just a shame CV5 was so relatively weak. I agree with CKs sentiments above about it, and have stated my own views earlier.

I hope the 25 min format still contains 3+ games reviews though -- not because I NEED their opinion on at least 3 things, but simply because I enjoy the reviews most - they seem to be the most thoughtful and articulate elements. I like the comedy too -- just not any of the stuff in CV5 unfortunately. Except the rap :(

Oui.

It being free is irrelevant. And all constructive criticism is welcome. We do try to make all of our shows different in tone from each other, so it is inevitable that people will have favourite episodes and least favourite episodes. We feel, and the BBC feel, that this is a more honest approach than the cookie-cutter mentality of many games shows. We don't want to do a pro evolution soccer tournament every episode, for example...:(

The Christmas episode contains no reviews. It is a year-end special, and is more of an...awards show deal. Oui?

The next thing you see from Consolevania will be a BBC produced teaser episode.

They have given us permission to 'sneak it onto le web.'

The format will remain with at least 3 reviews, in a 25 minute show.

Merci.

Bugger :(

I don't mind people providing constructive criticism but it seems like a few people on here are taking CV for granted and won't allow any room for experimentation.

But what do I know, I'm drunk! Merry Christmas!

Jesus.

Oui.

The boys are indeed enjoying their last opportunities to experiment or 'fuck about' before they are told to stop saying 'cunt' by people in nice suits.

Also, they are drunk too. And are usually drunk when making it.

CHEERS!

Sorry, but I found that episode dire, it was just embarrasing to watch.  I thought the basic premise of Consolevania was that it was about games ?

I don't know what this was about. But for me, every single attempt at comedy fell flat on it's arse and then died miserably.  Which is a shame because there's lots of bits from the first 4 episodes I thought were really great, in CV5 even the reviews seemed to lack something.

I have to agree with this. I hate to have a go at something made by guys for free, who put time and effort into something for us to enjoy, but I simply found myself skipping stuff just to get to the game reviews (which did seem weak). I simply want a game show about games. Make it funny if you want, but make it about games formost please.

But look at this forum. Its based around games sure, but look at how many people post in OT & ATF, etc. And that's why I like this forum, and I think that's what the consolevania guys are trying to inject into their shows. I love games but it doesn't mean I don't want to hear about the lives/humour/tastes/cultures of people on here as well.

Compare 'When Games Attack' and gamer tv/gamepad and you'll see what I mean. But consolevania on bbc3 should be better, hopefully :(

I agree. I failed to point out that despite my negative comments, I think Consolevania is the best TV games show I've ever seen. I suppose I just wish it could be perfect. I always look forward to the next show (probably too much) and I end up hyping it up in my mind to a point it cannot reach. Like how Perfect Dark isn't as great as Goldeneye, but it's still a damn good game.

Long may Consolevania reign. Alas I do not have BBC3.

Loved the obscure Deer Hunter reference, and I must be the only person who thought the Jeremy Clarkson impression on the Top Gear sketch was hilarious and spot-on, the over-reactive descriptions he gave everything were hilarious.

I've enjoyed every episode so far for different reasons, they ARE all different with a different tone each episode which may put some people off but I enjoy it, you never know what you're going to get next. The reviews were spot-on I thought, I don't there there is too much humour and not enough games because the humour is still games related. I'd love to see some sort of gaming news round-up, though. Perhaps with a commentry done by a different character each episode.

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

Here are my thoughts after finally watching it.

What I thought was good: The reviews were generally okay. The SA could have been livened up a bit by doing the mountain, parachute and boat landing lark as Kit suggested, but on the whole good reviewing. The John Gacy bit was great, as well as the Shigsy thing and the Tap dancing. The Sammy Miller part was good... a wee repetetive, but thats just nit picking. The "cool" list was brilliant; very random also, but thats part of the comedy aspect for me, the randomness of some of the characters/parts. Decision Commander was entertaining too. Score there. Loved how you had Jack's quote, followed by someone drawing a cock. I see what you did there. Nice. Rap was good too.

What I disliked: I didn't like the Hitler part too much this episode. I felt it droned on a bit, and was a tad... slow. (My sister walked in on that. She thinks I'm gay now. Thank you.) It would have been a lot better if it was a minute, instead of about 3. That was the only part I thought was particularly bad. Otherwise though, nothing majorly wrong.

What I thought could be improved upon: The credits at the end were a bit slow... perhaps a typical scrolling credits scene would work? I'm not too sure. And I'm not feeling too creative right now, so I'll post more later. Maybe.

Otherwise, good work.

And if CV goes on BB3, people will die. DIE.

The Russian Roulette took a while to grasp (they were sitting too close)...maybe that was just me.

The hugging part was stupid. Pathetic.

But you DO need an impartial editor, and someone to edit properly and know when to stop the shot (*hint* I wouldn't mind :().

Just get that sorted, and you'll be plain sailing.

Hee hee.

Yeah. Well, it was a really obscure reference to Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, the Harvey Keitel film, and is pretty much a shot-for-shot lift from that film. Same music, same events, everything.

Someone who's seen the film will like it, maybe.

One person, then. Maybe.

As for the BBC3 thing - again...in the event of it ever getting on telly, the BBC would be actively encouraging internet 'leakage.' Their idea. Don't tell anybody.

Cheers.

When I saw the Decision Commander all I could think of was Fable.  Fucking hated that game.

It's actually EXACTLY like a bit in Wing Commander III -- well, like lots of bits in that game actually.

When you're talking to someone two options would appear in black movie like bars at the top and bottom of the screen. As you flicked the mouse between them it'd read the out loud, I remember one in particular talking to a volatile wingman called Flash:

"This guy's a loon"

"Play along with him..."

It was most amusing (well it seemed like it back then (!)) to just continually flick the mouse between the two... especially as I think you were voiced by Mark Hamill in WC3.

[incidentally: WC3 also had fairly big parts (acted (vid-capture) as well as voiced) for John Rhys-Davis, Malcom McDowell, the dude who played Biff in BTTF and some soft porn actress called Ginger Lynn Allen -- not bad for a game released in 1994...]

I guess the fact it's called decision *commander* might be a reference, but with these guys I never know... B)

It was a bit more extreme in those episodes.

Although this wasn't the worst episode (remember CV3? ) I'm craving more information and features and reviews rather than comedy that seems to be less and less games related. Unless I'm missing something.

I'd be happy with 25 minutes containing three reviews, one feature, a Legend and a Gacy section for the proper TV show.

Feel free to continue experimenting though

The new 25 minute length episodes (the first one being the Christmas Special) will feature 3 reviews, one feature, and a couple of sketch-type bits.

But we'll be sticking with the idea of the tone shifting every episode. CV4 was our fun episode, CV5 was our depressing goodbye episode with lots of obscure references to games no-one has played and films no-one has seen, the Christmas Special was our 'we're a bit drunk' episode.

CV7? We're not sure yet. But we have some good reviews lined up.

I'm not sure whether or not the BBC teaser episode will be online before the normal CV7. It just depends. I imagine the BBC episode will feature a bit more access to people and places other than each other and our bedrooms.

CV3 was your crap episode.

I didnt think CV5 was too depressing, apart from the choice of music and use of slo-mo video. What Babybird album is that Gacy track off (is it even Babybird?)

We agree that CV3 is the weak one.

CV5 we love. CV5 is our misunderstood masterpiece.

We do, however, understand what people are saying about 'more games stuff'. That's what the 25 minute episodes will be from now on. And far more topical, too.

Oh, and that's Stephen Jones solo stuff on the Gacy bits. From the Almost Cured of Sadness album.
