Well we'll find out over the next few issues won't we...

To be fair though, few genuine readers have been complaining on forums up until now. All we really have is the Edge fanboys using the incident as more ammo.

The only real indication of upset readers will be a severe decline in ABC numbers, something I just can't see happening because I don't think it will really matter in the bigger picture.

A review is going to be placed on our website (due to reader demand on the forum) is this enough to placate you?

It's highly unlikely that a conventional review is ever going to appear in the mag now (it would be at least 4 issues late) but until we're all back in the office (off till the 4th) this just isn't something we can discuss at the moment (ie Concept's mention of a retrospective). What I do know though is based on the info we have received so far opinion does seem to be divided on the matter (although we've not had a chance to check any hatemail that may have been sent to the office ;) )

Hang on a damn mo'...I believe it was I who suggested the retrospective before Mr Concept.

Thusly, I demand a free subscription to Crash Magazine, and a whizzy badge, which declares me lord of all the pedants.

I dunno...some people. (as if it really were necessary...)

Strider, one more thing - any chance you can have a word with your subs section and ask them to MAKE SURE THEY SEND THE BLOODY MAGAZINE OUT.

The recent Zelda issue turned up 2 weeks after it hit the shops and I don't yet have the current issue (although Xmas post might have something to do with this)

I can ask, but I can't do much more then that I'm afraid. I'm only the retro editor after all; not anyone that's actually important.

.::: Well it wasn't meant offensive (although I should've guessed it was to be interpeted that way considering 'the heat' in the other posts). It's just something that's also applicable to this forum as a whole. We sound off about things, but together we're just a very small group.

Wether or not the readers wil actually care is not something you can measure by forum replies and reactions/letters. Most won't give a hic and just act by buying the mag or not. It goes both ways of course, not purely negative.

Of course, Biglime, literal definitions are for THE WEAK WHO MUST BE CRUSHED.

Er... note on the thread topic: I don't like it because it makes Games TM look as if they're being stroppy and playing politics. I admit there's dozens of good reasons why they may not want to review it this far down the line, and they could be (in fact, probably are) the ones which made them take the decision. But the *appearance* of playing politics is almost as bad as *actually* playing politics, because from a distance they look like the same thing.

Strider: Since you're retro Editor, how about reviewing it in the Retro section? It's old now, after all ;)

Let me tell you all what the Consolevania line is.

Magazines and games TV shows and the like need to get back into the old habit of slagging each other off.

Everyone's too fucking NICE.

I'll start:

POOLE WEARS GAY SHIRTS.

.::: This scolding better not lead up to another 'naked thread'...

I was only kidding!

TBH, I think its easy for us to forget that its great that an editor of The 2nd Best Game Mag on the Market TM to actually post on this website and give us his views. I would hate to think that Strider believes that we don't appreciate his efforts in both posting here and producing a damn fine retro section.

Its easy to forget that putting a mag out is not just a case of typing a few articles, getting the artwork and advertising together and then printing the thing. BTW, did you write that Vagrant Story piece - pure class.

GamesTM had the only opportunity of the mags to review HL2 on a 'normal' pc. They didnt. Chance missed tbh. So i wont ever read a review in print that says 'Anticitizen one runs like crap on our top end pcs'...il have to live with ones that spend 1500 words saying nothing.

Am I not here or something? Hello? Hellooooo?

Strider - bang a little review up in the retro section. Problem solved. People just want to see a number to justify their existence.

Thought I'd oust the second part of the message as I'm never ever going to get anything. And yet I still subscribe.. Why, I don't know.

*do your job*.

Sums it up for me personally.

Oh come on. I can name other Best Selling PC Games, which are generally "loved" where by they get huge, glowing reviews, and bugs just aren't mentioned!

Best selling? Who said anything about best selling? I'm on about the review. Ah, you must be on about all those other 10 out of 10 PC games that Edge doled out. :P

No, only GamesTM's loyal readers lose out.

That's why I'm angry with them.

KG

Perhaps their loyal readers deserve a review, purely out of decency and respect. But a magazine isn't a sentence; as its been said over and over in this thread, any GamesTM that really wanted to know about Half Life 2 could have found out by now.

Sure, it wouldn't be GamesTM's opinion, but I'm sure they'll live. :P

My point is, like Alex W said, to the "uninformed" it looks like GamesTM have thrown their toys out of the cot. But I see why you're angry.

At the end of it all, it's really doing no-one any favours.

(Incidentally fella, did you ever receive my PM regarding my dissertation? I really could benefit from your input.. )

Erm, because they had them on time, I guess.

The horse has already bolted well into the distance with HL2. I like Concept's idea of a quick retrospective review six months down the line, taking into account any mods and the like that have been created in the meantime.

The reason I feel that GamesTM is doing a disservice is that I don't always read a review simply to find out whether I should buy the game in question. If I did, I'd never bother reading the words of any review giving a game less than 50% for instance. But often it's reviews of bad games are the most interesting to read.

Of course, Half Life 2 isn't a bad game, but the general point remains - if the writing is good enough - if the review is particularly interesting, or entertaining, for instance - readers should still be able to gain satisfaction from reading it regardless of the fact that they may already know that the game is good, and even if they already own the game.

I already own Half Life 2, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy reading a really passionately, eloquently written review about it. Sure, it would be redundant in terms of helping me to decide whether to purchase the game, but whatever happened to just reading for sheer pleasure?

I guess GamesTM's dilema is weighing up the advantages of placing a review in the magazine now, for the benefit of readers who would simply be interested in hearing GamesTM's critique on the game; vs. the potential damage that could be done if a potential new reader flicks through the magazine in WH Smith next month, sees a Half Life 2 review, wonders why on earth the magazine is reviewing it so late, considers the possibility that the magazine might often struggle to get the latest releases, and so decides to buy a different magazine instead. Given this, their decision to place the review on the website seems fair enough.

With the Steam problems though - certainly Edge have a news article about it in the latest issue.

Do you mean Redeye's column? Who's views do not always coincide with Edge's? Hmmm... Still nothing about the stuttering probs, and nothing about in it's Game of the Year award in the Awards.

Hmmm...

hey, it stutters for me, and I'd still give it game of the year! Madness!

Stutters to the point of unplayable? Stutters at such an alarming rate at the best bit of the game - Anti Citizen One - that you just kinda stumble through it hoping it will end and calm down? It's hard for me to be fair on it when this happens.

Madenning, yeah, but not madness.

I'd rather wait than suffer the madness that seems to have swept Edge.

Game of the Year ok i could understand even though i feel the combat is poor. Innovation of the year and Visual Design of the year can piss right off though.

I haven't played Metroid Prime 2 but from what i've seen it rapes 90% of other games while they sleep in the Visual Design aspect.

Oh well at least GamesTM might be a bit more sensible about the game.

The scuff and stain on the wallpaper tells as much of the game's story as the dialogue. The lighting makes you shiver and sweat.

Anyone else wanna argue that Edge might be disappearing up it's own arse again? :)
