100 pages?

All of it filled with love. Pretty much.

Seriously, everyone on the forum should play this. In fact, I think it should be a requirement of membership here.

"What happens at the end of Resi 4?"

"Err... err..."

"Nope. Piss off. Come back when you've played it."

it's not the score though is it, it's all about the review text and when they mess that up they fail. Delta Force BHD and Headhunter Redemption are the two ones i can think of when i wondered if they'd actually played the game.

Don't want to derail the thread but you are absolutely right in saying that, I guess I just threw the score thing in as a light counterpoint.

I was wary about jumping to conclusions at first, after a few comments on here about the pacing, but I didn't find that a problem at all. There are new wonders around every corner, and the treasure hunting sub-quest makes you appreciate every last bit of the environment. And really, it's the environments that really push my buttons - I know it's a top three game when I just loiter around favourite areas, just "being there".

I also try and experience a good portion of a game before making any judgements on it, I admit to having high expectations of RE4 before I even ordered my copy(thanks to this thread) I hate to say the old "it exceeded my expectations" line but this title definitely did, it just pushed all the right buttons for me.

I think it's so addictive because it's just so satisfying to play.

The weapons are well modelled and feel empowering to wield.

Ashley is cute and doesn't become a hindrance due to duff AI.

The enemies, although tough, give you just enough of a chance to feel a hero when you stagger one, then launch him into a group with a well-placed kick.

Every weapon has it's own nuances, it's nice to max them all out just to see what special feature they may have.

Decent unlockables that keep you coming back for more.

Hone your skills in the shooting gallery.

All played out against some of the most jaw-dropping environments and cutscenes yet seen in a game.

If ever a game deserved the hype, this is it.

It's a pretty inclusive game too, in so much as when we were caning it last weekend, the non-gamers in the room were really getting into it, instead of giving it the usual "when are you going to turn this off?" treatment. It was pretty much like watching a 23 hour long horror film.

And to anyone who says it's not scary, I say this:

LIAR!

Watching my mate running around the village screaming "Shiiiiiit!", while pursued by 10 villagers, the sound of the chainsaw getting ever closer, with his wife shouting at him to run indoors, followed by them smashing the door down, and the ensuing hilarity in the room as he got decapitated - that alone is worth 10 out of 10.

The Village is absolutely rife with a creepy atmosphere, especially when you're first faced with it. I was watching a mate play through it for the first time and he was creeping oh so delicately through the whole first section, I was expecting him to charge through as I knew what was up ahead, but he wouldn't risk it(so I graciously stayed shtum), he was peering through the branches to try and get a glimpse of the dangers ahead and when he finally made it to the Village and the towns folk spotted him, he was all over the place.

Throughout the game though I have to say there isn't that many traditional Resi scary, jumpy moments, but there's definitely a constant edgy atmosphere. Maybe created from the fear of the unknown, of what's lurking around the corner to get you.

Yeah, there's a lack of the cheap shocks that were fairly common in the earlier Resi's but, as you say, the overall atmoshpere is far creepier. Just seeing the villagers crawl in and out of windows in pursuit sets me on edge.

The Boads of Canade-esque music is wonderful too in creating an aura of unease without ever being intrusive or jarring.

I think the music is what makes the game creepy. But only really the first section in the village. That siren sound. Sadly they keep changing it throughout the game making it less tense.

Balls. Sometimes it can really catch up on you, just like that. Like when I had to fight those invisible bug thingies underground for the first time. I shit my pants! Later, I found out some uncooked chicken gave me diarrhoea*.

This didn't happen.

The music is very well done throughout, no question. As it is part of the background It can be overlooked, but it is definitely used to great effect in many different places. The sewers particularly and also later on the mine cart section and now that I think about it the section you're protecting Ashley while she uses the whinches stand out in my mind as having music that added a lot to the experience.

Bingo. I think that really sums up how great the game is. One of my mates actually made me play through all of chapter 5 just so he could see it. I think he loved it as much as I did and he hasn't even played it.

Its also a sign of a great game when you load up a section just to show your mates a certain reload animation. Any game where the small details like that are so good is a 10 out of 10 for me.

I still can't get over 60k on the village using Ada. I think it's my fear of the chainsaws which is preventing me racking up the other kills.

My advice is to kill them in the barn before you go on another killing spree in the village. Use the TMP on everything that moves, throw in a fire grenade or two, blow up the explosive barrel...just make sure that everything but the chainsaw women are gone. After that, shoot the fuck out of them with the rifle. And make sure you shoot every opponent that tries to climb up the ladder. If you don't have neough ammo or time an you need to get out: throw a flash grenade.

What you need to remember are the places where the time and kill bonusses are.

Well, that's pretty much been my approach, except that I tend to run around nabbing all the time extends and goodies, then holing up in the barn for a last stand. Thing is, that means I'm only near one bonus chest, and I then have to run out looking for enemies.

I was 200 points off 60k the other night, so I'm sure I'll nail it soon.

What's the link between this and the other games, then? 'Cept for the characters, of course.

There isn't one really, apart from the fact that

Umbrella are still around and are after the Las Plagas parasite.

Oh, and I forgot to mention - I fired up Code Veronica last night. My word, I can't play it! Anyone who doubts that they've revolutionised the series should do a side by side comparison. RE4 is a massive step up.

Ah, you'll make it soon enough. Ada was hardest for me too in that level.

Did you manage to get 60k with Hunk in the village?

Not tried it yet. I've got 70k on stage 3 using

I think, but it was my first attempt. For some reason it only shows 4 stars...

That's strange. 70k should be more than enough. He is a powerhouse though. You'll probably hit eighty or nintety after a couple of tries.

Bah! Not been able to play it for a couple of nights now. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms!

What is everyone's favourite "place" in the game? I think mine is the Graveyard, incl the church and the walkways suspended over the lake. It just has a really spooky feel to it, but also includes the gorgeous colours inside the church, and the dramatic wind-swept vista over the lake. It's especially gorgeous in the rain, with lightning illuminating the church.

That bit is nice. If you look down you can see the rain spattering on the surface of the lake too.

I do like the dragon room. Just incredible.

But I think where you have the main fight with Krauser is pretty good. All that geometry and detail, ruined bulidings etc. Incredible stuff.

bit too.

The Dragon room is incredible, but you don't get to spend much time in there. Well, in gaming terms I mean. In reality I stood there for about half an hour, marvelling at the graphics. The beginning of Chapter 5 is another highlight for me, especially once you get inside. Marvellous detail.

This is another one of those games where I wish I could show it to a 10 year old Sock Drawer, just to blow his mind with the crazy games of the future!
