Resident Evil 4 (spoilers Warning!)

My favourite bit is

It's disappointing, too, to be apparently offered so much freedom right at the very beginning of the game, with its open forest landscapes, only to be firmly ushered along invisible boundaries

Yep i was really disappointed right after that bit. I mean next section is only the part which has the most intense chase scene through a village in a video game ever.

Someone needs to send Edge a letter saying linear games can be good. RE4 is focused in a way most games will never achieve.

i never thought id say it but yeah...Edge's Resi review was a major disservice. Sure it had a 9 at the end but the review sucked the game dry of life. Its an awesome game...the fighting never gets old....its full of secrets.....no arsey puzzles....a total rollercoaster ride.

Anyone reading that review could be forgiven for passing the game up. I wonder what Capcom think of it after granting them the interview last issue.

On the same lines quite a lot of game sites slated Half Life 2 for being linear, not new in any way, just a standard sequel etc etc. I hate it when people underappreciate games through lack of knowledge.

Lastly what was on the Edges most played....fucking Fantavision, Jungle Beat and Frequency. Well if thats what theyre playing instead of joining the rest of the world playing Resi then bollocks to them. Their loss. Just like porn stars say they cant watch porn because they know how its made and totally fake.....it seems Edge cant enjoy a videogame. Or if they do they certainly cant put it across in writing.

Guys, it isn't that bad, just a bit of a dry review. There are still plenty of positive comments.

The linear comment is an odd one though. Far from being disappointed, I think most people here would agree it makes the game better, as it pushes you on constantly into new areas (something the NGC review picked up on). And they really are new areas, one after another, after another.

But apart from that, the individual "stages" themselves are far more freeform than a Resi game has any right to be. As for "invisible" barriers - where? The forest is walled in by steep banks, and in Leon's situation why would you go scrambling up them anyway? You're supposed to be heading to the village. I can't think of any other invisible walls in the game.

As for the screenshots - well, they're just rubbish, I think anyone could have taken better ones.

(Just tried posting this in the Edge thread, which seems to have gone awol, so I'll have to come in here and avert my eyes from the spoilers!)

Well I thought the Res 4 review was pretty good, and actually reminded me of their review for the very first game (the interactive movie comparisons and weapon reloading tension). It picked at a few faults, but that's good. All games have faults. But there was plenty of praise too, providing a good balance. In short, it made me want to buy the game.

It did have positive things to say about it, just not as positive as I'd expected, and I didn't agree with any of their criticisms. That's about the size of it. Oh, and the screenshots weren't very good.

I deleted the Edge thread by the way. It was degenerating into the usual "Edge is shit" Vs "Edge can do no wrong" nonsense.

Ah, fair enough then :D

Same when I tried to play CV the other night. RE4 might not have revolutionised Survival Horror (according to Edge), but it's certainly revolutionised the franchise.

Hmmm... Strange. I played through the first half hour or so of RE2 on the PS1 and apart from the quick turn, it's still bloody ace. I was playing Dino Crisis on the DC last night as well for quite a while. I can still handle the controls on these games as the games themselves are still great.

What can I say?

Hard to avoid? Just always run and they'd Miss you. I did really enjoy Resident Evil CV, the start was so good and atmoshperic, but once you went to the ice area it went horribly wrong with far too many enemies and limited ammo and them horrible monsters that would lunge at you from two screens away. Though i did finally finished it and have to say it was enjoyable/tense/annoying all in one. But never ever again. Although i do wana play it again after i forgot the ending :P

Was a bit bored tonight so started playing it again using my completed save file ( still normal, but with different costumes).

Didnt bore me at all, still as thrilling as when I first played it. What was even better was that I managed to watch a couple of extra cut screnes that I missed the first time ( the first with ada in and the second the wolf ones). I even found another trader area.

I have not died yet, which Im a little proud of (although i came close to it once). I beat the end of chapter 2-1 and saved it for the first time there.

Only thing I have discovered is there is fuck all ammo about compared to my first run! I literally have picked up about 20 shotgun shells, a few rifle bullets and a few mines.

Mostly its been handgun bullets! Dissapointing ;)

At 2hours 5 mins (I think i was on 3:40 mins the first time round to this point) so I have easily knocked an hour and a half of my time.

I really need to get this game. I might as well wait for the PAL release now though. 2000 posts! must be a record for a game here?

heh sod that. Infact my mate had pre-ordered it, but it apparently comes out on the same day as Gran Turismo 4 and he said he will want to spend a lot of time with that - so just to make sure he imported a copy with a freeloader from playasia so that he can play it before getting GT4.

replaying it now...absoultely molesting enemies that i once hated.

the 3rd boss in the barn...wiped him out with a pistol, a grenade, 3 flash grenades and some sniper shots. he hit me twice. 1st time round he cleared out all my ammo and herbs

arrived at the castle with so much cash from efficient spending and knowing what weapons not to bother upgrading. I had 250000 at the start and bough the semi auto sniper, riot gun and blackbird straight away. tuned them to the max.

brilliant...takes the game to a whole new level when your really knowing what to do.

Woohoo! Finished it tonight. Best game I've played through this gen. 19hours 30mins of pure fun.

Final boss was very cool too, loved how there were loads of different ways to attack it. Definately gonna need to play through the game again, enjoyed it so much. Want to do the treasure hunting this time, and try out different weapons, fight the bosses in different ways, etc.

For anyone that hasn't imported this game yet... DO IT. You are missing out badly. One of the most atmospheric games ever made.

anyone ever bothered getting the exclusive upgrade for the riot gun? everyone keeps telling me to get rid of it and just have the striker, but I love my riot gun  just curious as to whether or not its worth 120k ptes

Click For Spoiler
I think it ups the power to the same or slightly higher than the full-powered Striker.

So it all depends whether you want to deal death more efficiently, or look cool whilst doing so.
