Server Choice

Not my kind of thing at all. I don't find that fun, I think it's just limiting the social aspect of the game.

I don't think it reduces the social aspect of the game at all. It just helps to cut down on spam in general. If I want to talk about that kind of thing I'll do it in guild chat or in the OOC channel. And as for the /say restrictions, on a PvE server the vast majority of the /say conversations I witnessed where along the lines of lol, wtf, hehe, and wanna group so I don't really think we'd be missing much. If anything I'd say RP servers are more sociable as the people are more likely to actually talk, whether it be role play or otherwise.

Just how seriously do people take RP servers though? Reading a post from http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.a...tmp=1#post23272 that Teymor posted I came across this -

Stamina. While you can run from Darnassus to Booty Bay in the game, chances are that your character would really be needing some rests. The game doesn't require it, but it's up to you to place those sorts of mortal limitations on your character. Would you really pick up the Rotting Bear Carcass?

Surely placing mortal limitations on your character is too much? Is it only the minority that go this far? It's this level of commitment that's putting me off RP. I'm hoping to be able to meet up with some of you guys come friday, so at the moment I would like to vote PvE.

In practice all that RP servers mean is people being more polite and there are less spamming and griefing idiots. None of the guidelines (and that's all they are) are strict at all, and they cover almost nothing that affects a normal player's behaviour.

But either way it turns out, posting multiple times in this thread how much you don't like RP servers isn't very helpful.

To be fair that's an extreme case, very few people do anything like that. Prox puts it very well. When I played on a RP in the US beta there wasn't really all that much role play just a much nicer social environment. A lot of the people are just there to get away from the idiots.

That doesn't sound as bad as I feared then.

As I said before, my vote is for an RP server - but, if it means splitting up the rllmuk group, I'd happily go for PvE. I'd rather not force people to RP if they don't want to, and I'm sure there will be some RPing available on a PvE server anyway.

Long as it isn't PvP I'm good... ;)

PvP.

But I can make another char (Undead Warlock?) on whichever PvE server you're on... just not sure if I'll have the time to play them both.

I'm similar to this, my friends are going PvP. But i want to try and get on and get to know you guys (and i know for fact, even though the constant danger appeals to me, sometimes im just gonna want to run around and explore without the danger of being gimped or whatever).

But having the time to do 2 characters at once. It will be difficult.

RP or PvE I don't mind really. Probably swing a little more in favour of PvE just cos I think it's more likely my friends will play on that if anything. Definately don't want PvP though. I wouldn't really have a problem with people that same lvl picking fights, but getting beaten up by higher lvl characters that you stand no chance against would be no fun.

I'll be going RP. Its exactly the same as PvE but with a filter enforced on utter tossers and offensively irritating names. If you think you're an utter tosser or have a particular affinity to them thengo for it but I'd listen to the vets on this one (I'm not one). I only came across a few tossers in the final beta, significantly more once it went open. PvE is gonna be home to a lot of 13 year olds pissed that they cant call their character Hitler or Neo cos someone got there first if the US is anything to go by.

As for people worried about not being able to talk about football or whatever on the general channel, so what, you're talking about 2 chat channels (general and yell) out of a minimum of about 8 separate ones. The vast majority of conversation will take place on the unmoderated guild chat anyway, for random drunk conversations just go to an Inn.

RP is sounding much better than I originally thought. So I'd probably go for that. I'm trying to find a link though which explains all bits in detail ;)

I've already voted but reading that post on the WoW forums about RP makes me want to play it even more.

Keeping up/being on the same server as you guys is/will be cool - but because there's no CoH style sidekicking system (major oversight IMO) I reckon I'll fall behind quite quick and not be able to play with you guys anymore anyway!

Also, I would actually quite like to actually try RPing properly - something I haven't done since I was about 16. Building a 'real' character should be more fun than playing the game as a Diablo II style level grind....

After having a good think and a proper read of the two main choices, I would like to retract my previous vote and go for RP instead. As long as I can still banter in guild chat I'm happy. I'll take RPG-playing characters over 1337 d00d speakers anyday.

EDIT: Fixed typo

I'm certainly not someone who wants to be playing "in character", writing a back story and never talking about real-world stuff.

For me the RP thing is just to remove the idiot factor, which in recent years has really grown to make me detest some kinds of online gaming: xbox live, pc games such as counter strike are rife with tossers who love spoiling other people's game experience. They can largely be filtered on those games through ignore or friends lists, but in mmorpgs they can't be - as they steal your kills, block your way and cause hassle.

I don't mean to be a pain in the arse, but can someone forward me in the direction of a link which explains the differences in terms of actual gameplay with PvP, PvE and RP. I know about the rules in RP, but I keep reading bits about "not wanting to get mobbed by some high level players". What rules are in place to stop this happening, or if there isn't, whats to say that wont happen on the RP server?

I just want to know what are all the differences between all server types. Just so I know.

PvP - a server type where you are always open to attack by other players within the world. You'll often find yourself being mobbed by high-level players who enjoy killing people who can't put up a fight, and going about your business can be very hard because of it.

PvE - the default server type. Differs from PvP in the way that you must manually turn PvP on - you cannot attack nor be attacked by another player unless you have manually turned PvP on. Much more friendly for low-level players, who can get to a decent level before choosing to open themselves to attack by other players.

RP - identical to PvE in every sense, save a couple of rules that have been well explained. RP servers tend to be where the more mature players go, and is often seen as the most social playing environment out of the lot. Rules prevent you from talking about the football on a public channel, but during the beta I never saw many Guilders using the public channels anyway. Rules also prevent annoying names, from l33t-style names to potentially offensive ones, such as 1ist3hsk1llz0r! and JewKiller respectively.

I'm sure I've missed some stuff, but those are the basics.
