It all serves to show just what an appalling turd MGS2 was.

I while ago I would have agreed with you but I replayed MGS2 last week and it's just an absolute corker. If you play it properly - sneak everywhere and hold up the guards for their tags - its amazing. The trick is to skip all the cutscenes, which are awful.

Nah, there are moments in 3 that are miles more exciting than the first two directly because of the jungle environment (sneaking into the abandoned shack at one point can be superb, and The End fight is possibly the best boss battle they've ever had in the series).

But aye, I'll be glad to see them go back into streets and buildings in 4, if only because it means I know roughly what the lay of the land is. There are places in 3 where you literally cannot tell what's around the next corner or over the next bump without compromising your position.

I loved that fight, it was hilarious. Anyway, yes, because it really does just keep on getting better and better.

Anyone that loves MGS needs to see the last fight. And The End. And Volgin. And that bit with the revolvers.

Edit: Oh, and the bike chase.

Yes. It was a slow burner for me as well, but when it gets going (facing off against The End was the real start for me) it just keeps getting better. And it has arguably the finest last two hours of any game last generation.

Edit -

Volgin pisses on Liquid Snake when it comes to yelling "NOT YET SNAKE! IT'S NOT OVER YET!" and giving chase.

Right, I've had this sat on the shelf now for about 3 months. I've finally forced myself (something I've never had to do with an MGS before) to pick up and play on.

There's just no compulsion in me at all to play it. Just defeated The Pain,

by just standing there with the M37 unloading repeatedly

Is there actually any point in me persevering with this, bearing in mind I loved 1 & 2?

Yes, generally bosses can be taken all too quickly in that game. It does improve when you start limiting yourself to the M4 and knocking all the bosses out rather than shooting them point blank with the RPG (for example).

Poisoning the Fear... brilliant.

The Fear is an absolute cunthawk. And the only boss to get harder when you use the new camera.

It's 9 hours of genius gameplay in a 22-hour package. A lot of it- particularly the horrendous climb up the mountainside- should've been cut out, but when its good- getting into Grozny Grad until the bit with She Who Shall Not Be Named- it's genuinely excellent.

Watching that video just now reminds me - what is up with that insanely, indisputably awful shotgun model / animation? It's like Snake has had his wrist stamped on by an elephant. How did no one at Konami notice it before it was put into the game?

The mountain climb is extremely frustrating to do without being seen, but if you fancy a change you can shoot down choppers with the sniper rifle.

It'll give you a long wade upriver though...

I'd never noticed that in the game, but you're right, it's really obvious in that video. It wasn't changed for the PAL version was it?

Of course, you should be using the revolver there anyway.

I appreciate I'm a bit late to the party but I picked this up dirt cheap the other day.

Not much fun is it?

How was it decided that standing behind trees and watching people walk around some woods, then punished with instant failure on the slightest mistake was considered enjoyable. I rather liked MGS1 & 2 and completed both so I don't know what's different with this version. I'm going to give it another go tonight but it's got it's work cut out.

I love the way you have to approach each new area like a fresh puzzle. How can you use the cover provided and the equipment you have to get past quietly?

It's a slower game than 1 & 2. It's not a game to be rushed.

Are you playing the regular version, or subsistence? Because Sub is a hell of a lot better, mostly due to the camera.

Um just the regular ol version.

I got asked at the start of the game if it was my first MGS game or if I preferred MGS1 or MGS2 - what difference does this have on the game?? I can find no reference to this in the manual or on Gamefaqs.

If you get chance, try Subsistence, I couldn't stand the original, as the camera just wasn't working out for me in the jungle environment, with the new camera it's a different game.

As for the questions at the beginning, if you say that you like MGS2 then when you first land in the jungle

you will be wearing the Raiden mask

. The other questions do not affect the game. (As far as I know).

It's no good. I tried again last night - hated it. Painful to play and not very rewarding.

I suppose it comes down to the fact that MGS is simply not for me; actually looking back on it MGS2 was a bit of a chore but not as bad as this.

Now I know how those people that don't like RE4 or Zelda feel. :)

MGS has never been a universally enjoyed series though. I mean even the first game disagreed with half the people who tried it at my school, they didn't like having to hide for five minutes to get to the elevator at the start of the game. Unlike RE4 which you would have to be insane not to enjoy.

AK47?! It's supposed to be a stealth game. AK47.....pffft.....you could use run'n'gun tactics I suppose but the real challenge/achievement is getting from one side of the map to the other without anyone being aware of your presence. When I first came across the first section containing patrolling guards I spent over two hours working out how to get past them. It's probably the slowest gameplay I've ever played and I rank this game right up there as one of the best implemented stealth game.

I still can't believe that people critisised it for not having a radar like in MGS, this game is about using your surroundings and equipment effectively to locate and evade the enemy. Radar? Pffft......bunch of girls.

In that case, you might as well take away your eyes too. Only sissies need those. Use your sense of smell like a man!!

I found playing without my thumbs an added challenge.

Pah - I can't be done with it. If crouching by tree trunks for 10 minutes waiting for some guards to pass is your idea of fun that's OK with me. It's not the slow pace that really bothers me, more the fact that the instant you are spotted it's basically game over.

What difficulty are you playing on? Early in the game, at least, I didn't find it hard to fight my way out of most alert situations.

I never found it was 'game over' for being spotted, and that's why I prefered it to the other games. I'd just AK-47 my way out of trouble, then hide. Yeah, it doesn't help your overrall 'score', but the game was always going to tell me i'm shit at the end anyway... Blowing people away is fun (no one edit that).

So the past few days I've played and completed subsistence. Now when I played the original MGS3 I never had a problem (except the indoor bits) and I managed fine using first person view, motion detector, thermal G etc.

But what a difference the new camera makes, it should have always been like that. In the original I thought you pretty much had to be in the grass to hide with the camo, but the new camera means you can really experiment with what works where and you can actually get pretty close to enemies without being seen.

Also on this run through (probably my 4th through mgs3) I realised about using the cig spray when disguised as a scientist. Don't know why I never picked that up before, it really made the indoor bits a lot easier. Although I do still think the scientists "alert" too quickly.

I still hate The Fury boss fight (appropriate as ever), and I forgot to go back to go back to the Grosny Grad pantry in preperation for the infamous "escort mission with infinite bad guys" at the end of the game. But other than those two blips which are probably less than 15 minutes of the game, the past 2 days playing it is some of the most fun I've had playing a game. If MGS3 came out with this free camera mode (which in retrospect, it really should have done). I'd consider this undoubtably the best game ever.
