Question for pencil people - how do you deal with large areas of flat dark shades? I thought soft pencils would be the way to go, but that just leads to chalkyness.

Charcoal? Cheating a bit but easier maybe.

Just to clarify - Paintchat is a java application that runs in your browser and is like multiplayer photoshop, with a simpler toolset. There's also a chat bar down the bottom.
