Awesome Support Bands

So I'm going to see Jimmy Eat World in Bristol this Saturday and I was fairly excited about it...

... and then I rung the box office and found out that the support act is Hundred Reasons, a band which I like as much as, if not more than, Jimmy Eat World! Woo! Now I'm literally twice as excited about it all!

So has anyone else ever liked a support band more than a main act?

Or has anyone ever seen either of these fine bands live?

I saw British Sea Power support The Strokes and I preferred their set.

And Adrian Sherwood support Blur.. and although I don't really rate any of his stuff that highly, live he is pretty damn wicked.

You know, that was precisely what I was thinking of when I clicked this thread. I've seen Hundred Reasons three times before, and they've been great every time (the second time is probably the best gig I've ever been to). But Jimmy Eat World should be good as well.

(Re: Bristol. Did you happen to ask them WTF are they doing with the starting time, btw? I've had 11 emails and an answer phone message since they keep changing it :o)

I have on many occasions paid for a gig just so I could see the support act.

The Pastels supporting The Tindersticks was a notable example. As was The Delgados supporting The Bluetones, as I walked out of The Bluetones' set, got pissed up at the bar and then made a drunken apology to The Delgados, as they walked into the bar, for the shite crowd who spent all their time shouting for The Bluetones.

Baby Chaos and Die Toten Hosen supporting Terrorvision.

The best was undoubtedly a freaky band (?) which mainly consisted of a guy playing 70's and 80's classics on a theremin, with disco backing tracks. Every now and then a woman would turn up and shout a few lines of lyrics, then bugger off again I forget what they were called, but they were strangely arousing. They supported TV Eyes, who were awesome.

I saw Neds Atomic Dustbin supporting The Wonder Stuff a couple of times, and tbey where ace, as where Eat supporting the same band.

I also saw Dinosaur Jr as a support act, but I can't remember who the headline band was. The Teenage Fanclub were better than the Soup Dragons.

I also saw Radiohead as a support band in King Tuts in Glasgow, but I thought they were shit. I still do.

White Zombie supporting Danizg.

Alice in Chains supporting Megadeth.

The Wonder Stuff supporting Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction.

For a period of about two years it seemed that just about every band I saw at the Marquee or Astoria were supported by the Almighty. I don't know if they ever made it to headline status but I used to feel a bit sorry for them.

I saw Pavement supporting Sonic Youth at Brixton - that was pretty amazing. Also remember Entombed supporting some crap UK metal act a few years back - I can remember going solely to see the mighty Swedes.

Saw Helmet supporting someone once, also Sebadoh. Two of my fave bands - as supports - bonus.

The Asian Dub Foundation were a fantastic support to Radiohead in Dublin in December '03.

John Prine supporting Kris Kristofferson was something special, too.

And as for introducing me to a great new act, Christ Moore being supported by his brother, Luka Bloom was brilliant. A spellbinding live performer.

2nd'd, Goldfinger fucking rock.

Add to that Goldfinger supporting Reel Big Fish. Got teh new Goldfinger album. It's a bit 'meh' in places.

Therapy? supporting the Wildhearts last year.  The kind of bill I dreamt about when I was 14.

Yeah, fucking awesome.

So has anyone else ever liked a support band more than a main act?

Many times.

Went to see Ride and hated them, but loved their support act Mercury Rev (a few years ago that)

Buffalo Tom, supporting The Wedding Present.

More recently I went to see The Strokes, but much preferred The Kings of Leon supporting.

Also I've seen The Flaming Lips support Beck twice and both times they blew Beck away, despite actually being Beck's backing band when he was on stage.
