What Are You Playing?

I'm only playing my DS at the moment, anything else seems too much like hard work and too uncomfortable compared to bed-based DSing.

Indeed :( Can't be arsed to sit in front of a console or the PC to play right now, and the DS games break the balance by being so fecking good.

I'm still on Lost in Blue, I'm stuck on a routine of simply getting food and need really to go and move the storyline forward.

I'm playing Atelier Iris on PS2 and beginning to be charmed by the game after around 7 hours*. Pedantically I dont like the way the lead character (named Klein) is referred to as either Klane or Clean in the American speech. Other characters named Eins, Zwei and Drei are also weirdly mispronounced. Obviously German is not taught in the US. All cash earned is being used to buy ingredients for synthesis so I am not sure I will ever be able to buy the weapon upgrades.

Also Dreamfall the longest journey on XB360 (It does not appear to need a patch over live to play on the 360 btw). I have not played the first game but I am really enjoying this so far. I hope it continues to avoid totally pointless and illogical puzzles a la Still Life which take you out of the flow of the game for long periods.

* irony appreciated

Oblivion -

Nearing the 50 hour mark. Still done hardly any of the main quest, working my way around the mage guilds of Cyrodill trying to get my membership to the arcane university. This is a smaller game than Morrowind right? And Morrowind was smaller than Daggerfall? Jaysis... I remember playing a cover disk demo of Daggerfall years back - just one dungeon but I was playing it solid for a week (was very creepy as well - in my mind it looks as good as Oblivion does now - probably shouldn't go back and tarnish that memory). Anyway, Oblivion - it's like Nethack only with graphics and in real time :) .

Street Fighter 2 - Hyper Fighting

Been playing this on x-box live with a bit of tutoring from some fellow forumites. Currently ranked 52,535th or something on the leaderboards. Ropey port visually but it's nice being able to play it online.

...

Should really be getting back to Dragon Quest 8 at some point as well... Got bored of New Super Mario Bros in about a week, it's good but just hasn't held my attention.

I was looking at picking this up, is it anything like Still Life or Farenheit? Both of which I really enjoyed.

Phantasy Star Universe Premiere (PS2) - Playing through the single player of this beta demo reveals a game that is very familiar, yet very different at the same time. Whereas PSO gave you offline missions for your customised character, this time the offline is completely separate from the online game, providing the player with a preset (inevitably a stereotypical J-RPG teenaged boy urchin who's fallen in love with royalty) character and a story-led RPG which uses PSO combat mechanics (albeit tweaked and upgraded with loads of new combos and weapons).

I can't say anything on the online due to this being Japanese, but what you basically get is Phantasy Star V and Phantasy Star Online Episode IV in one package. Should be a must-have when it comes out this October.

Personally Farenheit>Dreamfall>Still Life.

But I really enjoyed them all. You do need to get Dreamfall if you like this sort of adventure games. It's a great vivid story, and the fact I've never played Longest Journey didn't seem to impose itself massively. There are long spells where you don't actually do anything but absorb the on-screen developments. Once again it's great to play some fantastical epic as opposed to the 'realistic' chunder there seems to appear on the shelves all too frequently these days.

So, are you saying the offline is good aswell? Considering how much I adore the series both in its online and offline (ie: pre PSO) guises this is nothing but good news for me.

I have massive confidence that the online mode will be nothing short of brilliant but still remain skeptical over the single player portion.

Yeah, the offline is beyond awesome. It's basically a story-led RPG with the real time combat that you know and love.

If you think of PSO being similar to Super Mario 64 in structure where Pioneer 1 was the castle hub and you get missions, which once completed pretty much reset the levels back to scratch but with a new objective when you start the next one, here you are constantly moving forward through an adventure. You never really backtrack or go back over areas you've seen before.

As you go through you meet characters who'll join and leave your party and these guys have their own personalities. They aren't like the bots with 5 preset phrases to say throughout a mission from PSO. Eveything is strung together with cutscenes with voice acting, so you always feel a sense of progression rather than repetition as you did with PSO.

The only problem people may have is that the story has no effect on the online section, so some might feel they are wasting their time playing through that (as good as it is), when they could be online making progress with leveling up their online character.

But then that's nothing dissimilar from having an MMORPG to play whilst you've got another offline game to play. The only difference being that they are both on the same disc!

I'm playing Dreamfall too. I'm really enjoying it, despite the backtracking, constant loading and dodgy voice-acting. The 'combat' is astonishingly mediocre, but I don't care about that because it doesn't stop you progressing. It's just a good story, with decent characterizationwhich easily makes up for its wee niggles. I like the way it's bloody easy too.

I had to stop playing Fahrenheit because of the way you navigated yourself, both through the locations and the conversations. Far too frustrating and random.

Not played on the 360 much for a while so today has been some 360 lovin.

Top Spin 2 - I don't seem to be improving at this at all. Most of my lost points are through outs

Prey - It's a decent enough game. As with any fps it's replay value will be negliable, but I'm having a blast with it now. Not really sure i agree with the claims of "lazy level design" thrown around these places. Being able to walk around on the ceiling and up walls of whatever room you are in and portals to a completely different location (which you can see through as if there was a window) doesn't seem any less lazy then the room to room approach 90% of fps use (which everyone loves)

Dynasty Warriors 5 - Haven't touched this in an age, so started off the 3rd campaign and took almost 1/2 the map.

Disgaea has eaten me whole. It's the only thing I've played (bar the odd DS game here and there) since I started it. Some 40 odd hours clocked so far. My only gripe at the game at the moment (bar the lack of clear instruction on what some of the stuff ingame does), is how long it take to go through to level 10 in the item world - it usually takes me about 5 hrs or so each time (including interuptions) as I always have to clear the geopanels before finishing a level (good old OCD). Not being able to save without using a precious Mr. Gency's Exit is a little harsh.

Do you get the option to leave every 10 levels inside an item, or only after the first 10?

edit - is there anywhere else to get a Mr. Gency's Exit too?

Yesterday I had a bash at Namco 50th Anniversary collection thing on PS2 and played Ace Combat 2 for the first time ever. MAN, that game is awesome! I'm hooked :). I find it a lot more intuitive than Ace Combat 5 or pretty much any other arcade-style jet fighting game I've played.

You can leave after every 10 levels or at any other point if you use a MGE. If you defeat all the enemies on level 10 (or 20 or 30 or whatever) you get the option of returning to the palace without using the MGE earnt in level 10, hence you can stock up on them in relatively easy item worlds and use them in more difficult ones.

I try and decide early on whether to complete a level in item world or simply rush for the exit - you get the levelling up of the item regardless.

You can ocassionally find MGE as bonus items in the main game stages but not very often.

I too love this game but am finding a massive gap between completing the main storyline and getting enough influence with the senators to open up additional areas.

.::: wipEout purE (PSP) still...

I'm repeatedly hitting myself in the head for having not played this when I got it. It's utterly brilliant, has some incredible tracks and with the downloads you get some of the old ones as well. Absorbing items is perfect and keeps the gamespeed high. I'm starting to prefer it even to Ridge Racer, it's that good.

I havn't touched the DS all weekend! :)

Considering September is going to be a busy month for me I figured it was time to try and clear my backlog of 360 games.

Oblivion (360): - Finished the main quest on the 85 hour mark now trying to finish off the guild quests.

Dead or Alive 4 (360): - Attempting to finish off the story modes.

Ultimate Ghouls N Ghosts (PSP): - Got this as a birthday pressy and am enjoying it a lot it's tough but fair.

While not a game am also enjoying the MGS Digital Comic on the PSP as well and must say it's very good.

Cheers, I found out earlier by trying to dive into an item I'd already ben through 10 levels of, the Item General at level 20 was 20 levels ahead of my characters - took a while to get through that last map. I just ran through most of the earlier ones though, the enemies were a bit too tough for me to take all of them down.

Btw, when you transmigrate a character, am I right in thinking that they go back to level 1, and all their stats reset, but they retain their skills - right? Do they keep their weapon levels too? Whats the 'Inheritence rate' too? Wish there was a FAQ on Gamefaqs explaining transmigrating ;(

It's a brilliant game though, totally addicted now :(

Burnout Revenge - X Box

Loading times are teh suck

They've broken the Crash levels as well.

Strangely addicted to it though :)

Yeah, the loading times are a bit poor, as it doesnt use the HD at all, which is a bit stupid. And yeah, the crash junctions are mostly crap, and it's not just down to the golf-start thing, they just arennt very well thought out (unlike BO2, and some of BO3).

It's a good racer though still, really intense.
