Unkle

Picked this up yesterday... What do other people think? I quite enjoyed it but would love a proper track listing including all of the qoutes etc. as some of them had me kicking myself! My only real criticism would be the lack of track markings leading to annoying searching by holding the fast forward button (but maybe James Lavelle took inspiration from Lynch's Mulholland Drive DVD which deliberatly has no chapter markings).

They probably couldn't be arsed.

There have been LOADS of chapterless music CDs down the years - Prince's Alphabet Street (how annoying was THAT?), Sasha and Digweed's Northern Exposure, etc etc.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean... My little brother loves James Lavelle, I personally think he's a bit of a knob but there you go (James Lavelle, not my brother) :P

I just quite liked the bits from Kill Bill, Dune and Romeo and Juliet etc. in this (although at times the overuse of Unkle samples gets a bit much).

cubeadvance: That global underground mix is pretty good, but I would argue that his first fabriclive mix CD is better...

He is clearly the original inspiration for Nathan Barley (James Lavelle, not your brother)

I've currently got James Lavelle's 1st Global Underground CD in the car. It's a stunnig piece of work. Highly recomended.

Is that the Romania one? I know that hes done two, but I've only listened Romania. 2nd CD is a bit of a let down, but the first (and particularly the first half of it) is stunning. The guy is a genius, but I need to increase my collection a tad.

Anyone know who is actually in Unkle? Like, everyone who mainly contributes.

One of my mates scored off someone in Unkle too...can't remember who though...

Richard File produced and engineered the most recent Unkle album (Never Never Land) with Lavelle. It's a massively underrated album, if you ask me- at first hearing it sounds a bit samey, but the mix of real instruments and electronic-style production sounds utterly fantastic. It's easily as good as 'Psyence Fiction'- 'Eye for an Eye' is the best tune Unkle have ever done.

I really like their/his collaborations with Ian Brown. Reign on never, never land is the shit, and the remix of F.E.A.R is particularly good. Does anyone know James Lavelles/ UNKLEs main discoraphy? I only have Psyence + Never, but would love to hear more.

I often wonder how HMV ever sell any CDs that aren't in a sale......

A friend of mine who works at HMV explained that they needed the extra charges to pay for warehouse space, stock space, retailing space, yaddayaddayadda. I wasn't convinced at all. A lot of £12.99 CDs in HMV newly-released could easily be bought from Tescos in-store for £8.99 for a start. We both agreed though that the future of HMV would be a load of download/demo pods for people to come in and pay for downloads to their mp3 players without any physical media to handle.

HMV would probably charge extra for "pod space" though. Gah.

I used to work at HMV, it's not that expensive when you get the 30% staff discount so maybe they should just employ all their customers :o

Seriously though folks, they compete on the basis of knowledgeable staff and a greater range than Tesco etc. They are obviously more expensive than the internet retailers but then again loads of people still don't have internet access, as demonstrated by the number of people (at the branch in Sheffield where I worked anyway) that ordered things in-store. They're considerably better than chuffing Virgin Megastore anyway.
