Milk

I decided to have bottles delivered by the milkman about a month ago. Two a week (Tues and Sat) of semi-skimmed milk. It's the first time I've had bottled milk since I was little (folks bought it from supermarkets once my sis and I had grown up). I thought I'd try it out as I'm working throughout the week and it's nice to have fresh milk.

Or so I thought.

Last night I opened a fresh bottle from the fridge that was delivered on Tues. However upon pouring it into a cup of tea, white blobs of congealed milk came out resulting in me having to wash the cup out and start again - I put this down to just the top needing to be got rid of.

Just now I've poured some over my cereal and it tastes sour as hell - I mean, surely fresh bottled milk is supposed to last longer than 3 poxy days?

I think I'm going to cancel it on Saturday, pay the balance and go back to buying it from the supermarket.

What are your experiences? Do you have milk delivered or do you opt to buy it from a supermarket?

Why would bottled milk stay fresher than carton milk? This is beingf left outside, not kept cold properly.

It also costs more to get it delivered.

I'm not saying bottled should stay fresher than carton but I would expect it to last more than 3 days.

  • 3 weeks later...
Our milkman is the laziest bloke ever. Often, if I get home early, say about 3, the milk still isn't there. It's always sodding off, and if I can't have my cup of tea in the morning, I'm not a happy chappie.

Go to the supermarket.

But be careful of Sainsburys milk, it sucks.

Waitrose or M&S for me.

Even some crappy no name company from my corner shop makes better milk than Sainsburys.

That's why we don't have it delivered. Don't know what time the bloke did deliver, but it was after everyone had left the house for the day, and you don't really want the milk sitting out for any length of time - especially in this weather.

ACTUALLY, as someone who once spent a night shift working a milk factory, I can tell you that:

The milk for most of the major supermarkets (I'm talking: Sainsbury's; Safeway; Tescoes) is identical. Only the packaging is different.

A housmate of mine has almost converted me to organic milk. His mum had some sort of cancer (it was removed) but apparently theres bad stuff in regular milk so now he only drinks organic. Tastes really good too.

EDIT: from the supermarket though. Sainsburys.

I've never tried Tescos or Safeways.

Yeah... I dunno about Waitrose milk. I never had to deal with any.

So it looks like you're in the clear....

... for now.

You know how you can get 6 pint containers of whole and semi-skimmed milk?

yeah, I want it in one of those

You're just too used to those crazy big containers they have in the US, aren't you?

I'm a massive milk fan, but even I'd be intimidated by the US sized containers.

Personally, I find anything bigger than the 4 pint container, and it's just a pain to pour the stuff.

I'd been thinking of getting milk delivered (as I get through so much), but this thread has put me off. The Co-op is only a 5 minute walk away anyhow (annoyingly there was a corner shop right opposite my house when we moved in, but it closed down the next day - I'm sure I'd have been able to keep it open from my milk purchases alone!).
