Streets Of Rage 2

Well, being a Sunday afternoon I just want to relax, so I turn on TV and all thats on is that Holland Moto GP thing. I watched that for five minutes hoping that some was going to have a nasty looking crash, but nothing. So, I look at what games I can play and out the corner of my eye I notice my Mega Drive sitting on the shelf like a proud museum piece. I decided to plug it in for the first time this year and the only game that I feel like playing is Streets of Rage 2.

I was expecting only a quick burst before I return to the modern consoles, but oh no, I couldn't.....stop....playing. I actually played the game until I completed it, which I can't remember ever doing on a retro console before. It was just soooo addictive and it shocks me that it hasn't even considered for a 3D update.

And now my hunt begins for Streets of Rage 1 (which I remember playing, but not that well) and Streets of Rage 3 (which is apparently so rare it goes for like £50 on ebay).

Speaking of which, is SOF3 REALLY that rare and if so, how much would be a reasonable price for it?

SOR2 is by far the best, i was not fond of 3 at all... not sure about the right pricing for it but £50 is not worth it espeshally as 2 is a lot better... but as for 2d beat em ups i prefer Final Fight over sor2....

Yeah i agree. I wouldnt say its my favorite classic game ever but it fits in my top 3 for sure.

Its just such a well made game. The art style - the music - the gameplay. Its all pretty much perfect. The length is great too. Its certainly my favorite brawler ever.

Preferably in 2 player mode.

SOR3 - i never played it properly. But its kinda dissapointing compared to SOR2. The music is not as good, the characters are meh, and to be honest i cant say much else cos i didnt devote much time to it.

It is however rare, £50 is a little steep id say more between 20-40 quid. Think my mate has a copy of this actually.

Way back in 1999, Streets of Rage 4 code was submitted to Sega of America for release on the DC, but the dumb fucks rejected the project, effectively killing any chance of a 3D update... More info (+ videos) here

SOR2 really is a superb game. Many a time I've switched on my PSP to play something, only to end up playing SOR2 instead for an hour or so.

It requires no effort whatsoever to get really into it, which is the game's strong point. SOR3 was far too drawn out and made things far too complicated, it's not a shadow on it's predecessor.

I should unpack my MegaDrive and play it again, last time I played it through like 2 or 3 consectutive times

It really is a wonderful wonderful game.

I have played SoR1 and SoR3 but I only own SoR2, and I would definitely say that that is the best. It's just so perfect.

Everything's just feels right.

I remember thinking it was hyped crap when I got it first. It was the first 16-bit cartridge and cost a bloody fortune. Finished it on the hardest setting after a couple of hours.

But it's definately dated well. The graphics are still wonderful. I think it's easier to appreciate when you haven't shelled out £55 on it as well.

Bah, I've been gaming for about fourteen years and I've still yet to play an SoR game, even though I can easily get hold of emulatory goodness...(mind you, if anyone's up for it I'd be happy to try out the multiplayer across Kaillera (with Gens)...)

Streets of Rage 2 what a fucking stonker!!

Best bit for me is toiling through endless amounts of goons up the elevator (cue obligatory sega boss revisit) and there beside Mr X's golden throne stands this completely mysterious dude in black.. "Who the fuck is this joker you ask yourself?"

Mr X snaps his fingers and the guy turns into a complete lunatic with a move set as big as yours, with that superb sliding reverse kick you in the chin move (where he talks like a pirate for some reason!!)

A short melee with him and then the sweetest coup de grace. Turning your back on him and finishing him off with your backhand punch (god I loved doing this :D )

Great game!

Yeah, that guy's a beast. Completely changes the pace of the boss battle.

I'm pretty sure he's a secret (selectable) character in SOR3.

Shiva. I heard that he was playable aswell.

Also can someone who has completed SOR3 clear something up for me. My GF's bro said that him and his mate clocked it and the message "To be continued....next summer" or something along those lines, implying that a 2nd part was due? Any confirmations on this?

As I have said many times before, I want to play it on a big screen without the hassle of lugging out my Megadrive, routing the PCs videocard to my TV, or chipping an Xbox.

Got a DC? Sega Smash Hits Vol.1. No? Apparently the next Sonic Collection will have 1, 2 & 3 on as unlockables.

EDIT: Just clicked that link and exposed myself as a cunt. Get a DC! Best console of this gen!
