What did he do?

Was given leave by the club to visit his Mother in France. Told to come back Wednesday evening, but came back Thursday morning. I don't think he'd sorted his covid-testing properly either, so wasn't able to take part in Thursday training.

I'm guessing he wasn't very apologetic, which is presumably what's led to him being booted out as Captain.

It's telling that in the club's statement, they mention his "latest disciplinary breach". We know about the Spurs game where he was dropped for being late, but I wonder if there are other incidents which haven't been made public.

What a shit show. Why on earth did they give Aubameyang a new contract on huge wages effectively making it impossible for him to go to another club and then do this? He's pulled this sort of stuff before, such poor man management...

From the outside I admire Arteta has put his foot down over what appears to be some ill-discipline from his captain - but in the other, why has he had to go so public with everything? If he has tried to shame him, then I doubt he cares as it will just help engineer any more away (if that is what he wants) - yet he then goes on to say he won't say what the breach actually was.

More than anything it points to Arteta not really having great man-management skills and even some naivety as to how clubs should deal with this kind of stuff?

It's easy to slaughter the club and call it bad management but if Auba wasn't offered a new contract and was allowed to leave on a free 18 months ago the club would have been absolutely buried.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

You could of course say that we didn't learn from the Ozil situation but I don't remember any fans, or pundits actually, saying at the time that we were wrong to give Auba this new contract on these mad wages.

It showed ambition apparently and made a statement.

If it works out it makes a statement and shows great foresight but if it doesn't work out then it shows bad management.

Like I said, hindsight......

It clearly hasn't worked out as he hasn't performed anywhere near the level he was before, we are stuck with a player with 18 months left on his contract that hardly anyone (no one) can afford to buy, or even have for free, and now we have this added situation.

Maybe letting him go in January for some kind of fee or at least to get him off the wage bill could be the best outcome all round.

He'll need replacing though.

Maybe Vlahovic or Calvert-Lewin?

I think a decent amount of fans, pundits etc. said the wages were the big risk. Fine to give him a new deal (and with the state we were in, we had to really), but a 3 year super-max deal was always at risk of back-firing at some point during that term.

I'm less bothered by these "breaches", and far more by his form on the pitch. How much of it is due to Father Time, and how much is due to Arteta-ball, I'm still unsure.

Wouldn't surpise me in the slightest if he went abroad and bagged 20+ goals again for a few years.

Meant to post this before the Leeds game, but I’m going to put my big fat head on the block and say I like Arteta and I want him to stay.

Not saying we will get fourth or anything but this team he’s built is the most exciting one I have seen in a long long time. Love it.

I think he gets a bad rap and I’ve definitely been vocal in here that I’ve had doubts about him. But, I think a lot of that comes from the manner of some of our defeats and the natural uneasiness that creeps in because he has zero experience at this level. Also, the squad is really likeable and talented so there’s almost a desperation that we don’t waste this opportunity on a rookie manager. He’s has really turned a corner in the last couple of weeks as we’re blowing teams away now rather than scraping past each week. Fair play to him, nothing would make me happier than for him to get us top six.

Tbf before the villa game I was definitely  of the opinion that any serious club would have sacked him already.

But even with the blips, I think I have seen enough to convince me that he can turn this team into *something*.

I also think he’s managed to get fans excited as well.

i agree with you on the rookie manager point. until we manage  to finish the league in a position or we get some good wins against the top three there are always going to be questions.
