toythatkills
Not really. I don't think Fabregas is worth £50 million to Barca but he is to Arsenal. Blackpool were also relegated which usually affects player values considerably too. There's loads of factors in play obviously, but £10 million for Jagielka is definitely taking the piss. My point is that you can't take into account what he's worth to his parent club when you make a bid. Just because he's worth £20m to Everton doesn't mean he's worth £20m. To use the Adam example again, he would probably have been the difference between Blackpool spending the season after next in the Championship or the Premiership. He could be worth even more than £100m to them if you consider it like that. That doesn't mean he's worth £100m though and to bid that would have been absurd. I mean, I agree, the bid is definitely taking the piss but not for this reason. It would have been stupid to begin negotiations with our highest offer, though. Daley
Negotiations are ongoing apparently. It's a strange one if you ask me. He is ok but neither the tallest or the quickest so i'm not sure what Wenger really feels he could add. A bit of organisation and good old British steel for the cliched "wet Wednesday nights at the Brittania" but other than that it's a very un-Wenger buy. Which is perhaps exactly what is needed. I think the same. Wenger generally seems to buy players that fit in with the culture and philosphy of the team and an English style CB doesn't seem his type of transfer. Maybe its what we need though as you say.

Steve007
You can see why Wenger takes risks on foreign players when he's expected to cough up £15m-£20m for an Englishman. That's a hideous amount of money for an experienced average defender. I say he's average because he's not a bad player but he's nothing spectacular either. mop
Hmm...I think Jagielka would be a great signing but then I'm a fan of his. Thing is, I think we might all might be over analysing all players linked with us and deeming them alright but not great enough because we want something that doesn't really exist. Usually a signing turns spectacular, really - look at Vidic - instead of being ready made. We don't have the money (maybe) or the negotiation chutzpah to land a ready made truly world class defender. Art Vandelay
I just think he'd struggle with our ridiculously high line as he's not that quick across the turf. For £10m it would be good just to relegate Squillaci down the pecking order, but I'd rather we blew the back doors off for someone better than him. mop
We can either buy Jagielka, or take a punt on another Squillaci. There is that story about the man who went around the whole world looking for diamonds but failed to look in his own back garden. Then again, you'd want to be really fucking stupid to dig for diamonds if your back garden is in south London.
Daley
We can either buy Jagielka, or take a punt on another Squillaci. I don't think that is the choice. Vidic was £7m I think. He is someone who costs inbetween and has become fantastic. Neither bargain basement panic buy or someone hugely overvalued due to a couple of decent (injury interrupted) seasons in the Prem. Vidic, Ivanovic and someone like Skrtel were all bought for about the same money and were neither cheap shit imports or English-based and cost a fortune and also improved as they gained experience in the PL. This is the kind of buy we should be aiming at. Sure there isn't an endless supply of these types of players but to say it's Jagielka or Squillaci is not true. I even think Koscielny will come good and he cost more than 50p but less than the moon. £10m wasn't it? Vermaelen also. What it does take though is a bit of time and effort (and know-how?) to spot these players and invest the right amount rather than buying "tricky-skillful-midget #57" or "France-based-African-player #478"

He seems to have been hit with the fans hostility bat for some reason and while he hasn't been a Vidic, he has had a pretty good first season. Vermaelen will probably be our Vidic if you like. I don't think we buy as poor defenders as some make out actually. Sagna, Vermaelen and Koscielny are clearly good defenders, it just seems to be how they are drilled. Steve007
Emmanuel-Thomas set for move http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_7058163,00.html I don't understand this. Art Vandelay
He's a lazy bastard though. He ambled through his loan moves and doesn't try very hard in training. He'll end up at Championship level and that's it really, what a waste.

toythatkills
At least it happened in a game that was utterly meaningless, good to have that sort of stuff out of the way. What about Gervinho, though? Scored twice and was only playing for half an hour. My maths suggests that we're in for about 240 goals in next seasons PL!

wev
I'm probably reading too much into it, but I got the jist that he was basically complaining about somebody from the PR staff uploading a pic to the Arse.com official twitter rather than their own accidentally and then spending time covering their tracks, he closes with Just sign a huge, bloody defender that won’t allow welfare opposition to bundle the ball into our net, and I’ll forgive you Arsenal. Just sounds like a non-story really and yet somebody else finding anything that they can to complain about Arsenal.
toythatkills
It don't think it was meant to be a serious news post. Just that all that's left on Arsenal's twitter is "Apologies for our last tweet - it was posted in error. Our account has not been hacked. Normal service has been resumed." People that see that would probably be curious, I know I was.

Don't you always bang on about arrogant players who think they are too good to graft getting new contracts? Surely you'd be backing this all the way. Also regarding the earlier chat about buying "midprice" defenders Vidic must been bought about 6 years ago and was considered pretty expensive at £7mio for a defender from the russian league - the prices now are a world apart, probably stick another eight or ten mio on to it to get a comparison. He was also bobbins in his first season - certainly worse than Kosceilny in his. Ivanovic wasn't cheap either, pretty sure he was double figures from whichever Ruskie club it was and that a few years ago. Added to which they already had Terry, Carvalho and Alex to play centreback. Skrtel I don't feel is much better than what we already have.
