Weak, Old, Slightly unproven (and sold), Old (and sold).

None of those come near.

Modric plays very deep for spurs, and gets stuck in as much as anyone. This is in perhaps the most physically demanding league in the world. Besides, whoever said Barcelona were a team to turn down players based on lack of physical strength? I take that Sneijder is at his peak, meaning that there is practically no hope of recouping the transfer fee at a later date. Signing him doesn't make tremendous business sense, but he's still class and will play at the top level for years to come. Pastore would've probably ended up at a much bigger club, were it not for the promise of Sheik-inflated wages. Pirlo is old and probably might not have left Italy, but is a good example of the class that has been available on the transfer market.

Which is a large part of the reason they aren't as willing to bid as highly as you might expect. If there wasn't any history they'd have put £40m on the table without blinking I think.

Well I think it's also because if Cesc is going to move, he's only ever going to move to Barca. If they felt there was any danger of him going to Madrid or City or whoever, they would've had to bid much more. Nasri is a much simpler equation because he seemingly just wants money, so you should be able to sell to the highest bidder.

I don't like Modric, at all*. I can see he's had some good performances and some very good performances...But so has Charlie Adam and I don't think he would have been Barce bound if Liverpool hadn't been so fast. I don't think Modric will make much of an impact if he goes to Chelsea and I think he'd have even less at Barcelona.

Fabregas is better. To improve, I think you need to go younger than him and hope for development - Ramsey, the young Germans, maybe Canales on a good day.

*Not a massive surprise in this thread, obv. But even as a neutral.

I'm sure there are ways for both clubs to save face though.

Indeed. Like when Ronaldo signed a pre-contract deal with Madrid and stayed for another season. Barca don't need him right now, so they could reach a compromise with Arsenal where he stays for another season or so. For the sake of the player's sanity that's surely the best solution.

What's the point though? He's only going to one place and we've had this every summer since he's been about 19. If Barcelona had any interest in preserving his sanity they'd stop talking him down in public and spending fortunes on players before their 'number 1 target'.

No club can function like this and they know it. Sooner or later we'll have to accept their derisory offer to get it over and done with once and for all. That sooner will be August 31st, I'm completely sure. To be honest I think that's the solution the board have too.

They haven't sold us players per se. We've taken young players from them who haven't signed professional deals yet, so Barca can't stop us. We pay a compensation fee and that's more or less it. In terms of senior players, it's been one way traffic with us selling them Petit, Overmars, Gio, Hleb etc. I don't think we have a very good relationship with them as it is. I couldn't care less if they didn't want to do business with us again, if anything I'd quite welcome it.

And Terry Henry

I was laughing how much you all rate Fabregas, whilst he walks around doing fuck all until someone passes to him, and mugging you all off in the process... your amazing captain! Best Midfielder in the world init!

Central Midfielders better/more valuable in terms of contribution to any given team than Fabregas?

Xavi

Sneijder

Alonso

Iniesta

Giggs

Gerrard

Wilshere

Lampard

Kaka

Modric (and no, he's not the complete midfielder)

Ozil

Essien

van der Vaart

Nasri

Gotze

Gourcuff

Pastore

FAURLIN!

And probably some more

Fabregas has become Riquelme as he is NOW! and still not quite as good.

CL draw later. Zurich or Odense then Twente then Benfica or Rubin would be the obvious preferred opponents really.

AW has a touchline ban for the 1st leg, Nasri & RVP are also banned & can't see Cesc playing & getting cup tied, if he's still with us that is.

Apart from all that I can hardly wait.

Most of it is vaguely plausible if still stupid and wrong, but Gourcuff? Really? Is this entirely based on that amazing goal he scored? He's been garbage ever since by all accounts. He's decent on FIFA, maybe it's that.

Funnily enough Udinese didn't have to qualify (I guess due to Italy's country rank) but their co-efficient thing is low so Benfica are seeded above them so we can play Udinese.

These are the five teams we can play.

This means that Arsenal’s potential Play-Off opponents are Rubin Kazan, Udinese, Odense, Twente or FC Zürich.

Also something intersting on Twitter just now. I knew who his agent was but didn't realise it was actually true.

Know for a fact Nasri's agent Jean-Pierre Bernes is thoroughly enjoying messing Wenger around. He's waited 18 years for a spot of revenge
Wenger hugely respected in football but he has enemies too. His efforts to take Marseille down in early 1990s have left some deep scars
Wenger did his best to make sure OM, Tapie, Bernes were punished over match-fixing. His current assistant Boro Primorac testified in court

https://twitter.com/#!/mattspiro

Bernes was involved in the Marseille thing back when Wenger was manager of Monaco.

A bit better I suppose? Benfica are probably stronger than Udinese. Still don't fancy playing them though.

Me neither but they have sold two of their best players (Inler and Sanchez) but are still the most dangerous I reckon. Really, really don't fancy a trip to Russia either.

Literally or metaphorically? I quite fancy an away CL game this year, the Qualfying round might be the only chance based on who we might get and who we've got suspended.

Both. I am away on holiday between the 19th and 26th so I will possibly miss the home leg depending on the draw. And i'm missing the Liverpool game. I don't remember the last time I missed a league game, nevermind the first home game of the season and such a big one. :(
