Cool Details That Only You Noticed

...in films. I was watching Alien3 the other day, and saw what must have been an artificial addition that was quite satisfying to have noticed. In the scene with Ripley and Clemens in his quarters, after he gets called away to where a prisoner has been attacked, there is a long shot zooming into Ripley's face as she obviously suspects what happened. The shot dims very slowly to blackness as her face fills the frame. As it does there is a small glint in one of her eyes. When the screen goes black only this glint remains, becoming a small point of light in the next scene, showing the tunnel where the prisoner got killed by the fan.

A minute detail and of no consequence at all, but obviously deliberate. I've never known anyone to have noticed this, I even submitted it as trivia to the imdb (couldn't think where else to put it) and it didn't get included. Anyway, that's it really. ^_^

Also, for no particular reason I was hopping around the imdb message boards for Event Horizon and one of the posts mentioned a bit I'd never noticed before. During the early dream sequence where Weir sees his wife on the bridge of the Lewis & Clark, when you see her face reflected in the computer screen in front of her, above her reflection there is a pair of very distinctive eyes staring out of it too. I have never noticed this and have seen the film several dozen times. I will go back and have a look at this sequence soon. During the daytime. With the lights on. And the curtains open. And the radio on.

Sooo, post your detail-spotting. It's not just me ... is it?

It's on the commentary but I spotted it before I'd listened to it (honestly):

...in the first few scenes of American Beauty in which the dull monotony of Lester Burnham's life is portrayed, he is subtly shown to be behind bars in each scene.

One where he's sat at his computer in his office, & his reflection on the screen is overlayed by the desktop image forming 'bars' down the monitor.

Another in which he's gazing out of the window at his wife & as he returns her wave he looks like he's trapped in a cell.

Brilliant stuff. I think there're a few others, but I can't remember them at the moment.

Amelie's ( ) another one that is chock full of little touches that again are in the commentary, but a few of which I spotted beforehand. The most notable of which being when Matthieu Kasowitz's character opens his eyes when he's in the park & the pigeons behind him take off at exactly the same moment.

That made me think of another - The Insider, near the beginning, Pacino has just finished meeting the Sheik. He gets up and takes his blindfold off, finding himself in a darkened room. He goes over to the curtains and flings them open, revealing a bright scene outside that temporarily blinds the camera - there's a whiteout then about a half second later it adjusts and you can see, kind of mimicking human eyesight. I don't know if it was intentional but I like the effect very much.

In Ghostbusters, check out the scene where Sigourney Weaver sits down in the chair and the hands pop through it and attack her... If you watch carefully (and in slow motion) you will notice that while she is struggling, she pull's her shirt open and her tit's pop out very briefly.

I never noticed that. I did, however, notice how one of the hands quite blatantly grabs at least one of her tits and gives it a fairly thorough groping- was that the stuntman being opportunistic, or was it part of the film?

Reminds me of Return Of The Jedi when Harrison Ford grabs Carrie Fisher's tit.

Han and Leia are on Endor holding off the stormtrooper when Carrie gets shot, falls back and Han catches her. His hand grabs her shoulder at first but swiftly moves to her tit.

Ford, you sly dog you.

He does it in the trash compactor in ANH as well...

Also love the 2001 HAL 9000 relation to IBM - IBM being the next letters in the alphabet after HAL.

That was purechance (allegedly)... in the foreword to a pretty recent printing of 2001 Clarke said it was bullshit and was not planned that way.

On a 2001/10 trip: I get the shivers everytime i heard SAL9000 say "will i dream" on the Biosphere track "The Shield"

Hey, here's something else. At the very, very, very end of Aliens. Like, after the last bit of text on the end credits has faded out. Listen as a facehugger scuttles from the left to the right side of the screen. I have never known anyone to have noticed that, not that I've been looking or anything. Nice sequel setup.

Jaws 2, yeah I know it aint great, but there's a nice touch...that always makes me smile.

One of the battered, yellow barrels that were shot into the shark and then used to float Brody and Hooper home in Speilbergs original masterpiece (not a word I bandy around) , can be seen in the background by the door outside Brody's house when he's leaving.

They are now being used as flower pots. I like to think they're maybe a kind of makeshift, personal memorial to Quint.
