Resident Evil 5- 360/PS3

After playing Resi 4 for months and then moving to Gears I ended up hating Gears for not being Resi 4. Now after playing through, again, Gears 2 and then 1 it was an effort to get into Resi 4/5 mode again.

They're both excellent with Gears borrowing heavily from 4 then adding its own stuff. All I know is that Resi 4 single player and Mercenaries lasted me months, and then got replayed for years. Gears 1 & 2 single player combined lasted about four weeks.

If Resi can introduce online that's anywhere near as fun as Gears whilst maintaing the single-player, it's longevity could last me forever.

I wouldn't go that far, but there are a lot of things it took from Resi 4 that we now take for granted. I think the most obvious things to me were the way the game was paced, the emphasis on set-pieces, the camera and the controls (to an extent).

It's no bad thing at all. Resi 4 is one of the best games ever, so it's only natural these things would be taken on board.

EGM: You're a big fan of Resident Evil 4. How much influence did it have on Gears? Blind enemies, the camera, the mine-cart sequence, a boss that you kill by sinking him into "lava".... Did we miss anything?

CB: There's a fine line between what some people claim is paying homage and what some people claim is just a straight rip-off, right? When I go back and play RE4, its pacing was actually a bit more methodical than what we wound up with. Gears has a kind of crazy pacing...more of an action-movie feel--we wound up leaning on the action side more than the suspense side, whereas RE4 swung back and forth more quickly between the two.

Ultimately there's definitely overlap between the two.

Bleszinski said the seeds of Gears of War were sown by three titles. The first was Capcom's Resident Evil 4, which made an indelible impression on Bleszinski even before its January 2005 release. "I really liked the pacing and the over-the-shoulder view," said the designer.

Well consider me shut up, wombly.

It's weird, coz I knew that (the RE4 influence), I mean I remembered that stuff, but it somehow just completely left my mind at the point of asking that question. I also recall now making comments myself saying Gears and RE4 shared a sort of high-action video-gamey flavour, aside from the more obvious similarities.

So I don't really know what I *wasn't* thinking, there, my apologies.

I still think ''its entire existence'', is taking a bit too far, mind. Then again, unlike a lot of people I actually have played kill.switch.

Gears 1 is a pale shadow of 2. 2 is a blast from almost start to finish. Seriously, put aside the huge man prejudice and join in the fun. Gears 2 single player is pure amaze.

It wasn't just that, or even that at all really, that was just one aspect I happened not to like. I can forgive any design ethos if the game is good enough (Halo isn't exactly art is it?). The main beef I had with the game was the repetitive gameplay, clattery weapons, awful vehicle/bat sections, disappointingly mundane set pieces, and some really tedious bits with walking over planks and whatnot.

That said, I did like certain aspects like the roadie run, so perhaps I will try the sequel one day.

I honestly think that could be said of so many games. Great games like RE4 too. Sure it has loads of variety around it, but the core gameplay is obviously fairly repetitive. But i've never seen what's wrong with that.

If you find something fun to do, you're likely to find it fun to do again and again, that's how I look at it.

Back to RE5: I didn't really lay into at the time (I played it ages back) but, yeah, I came away slightly disappointed and not particularly, y'know, impressed.

But, strangely, I still don't feel that worried, and despite the problems I had with it, it was hardly a bad game.

Sure. I guess I didn't like the central mechanic enough to want to repeat it. I do think that RE4 had significantly more variety though, just in terms of being able to jump out of windows and move about in a variety of ways. But yes, the central gameplay doesn't change.

And I think you're right not to worry about RE5. I think it's going to be amazing when we see the whole game and not just an out of context snippet.

You know what? I've been playing the demo a bit more and I've gotten used to the controls, it's not that bad. It isn't exactly scary, but it's a lot of fun and despite the clunky controls, it really makes you feel indestructable at times. I love meleeing people with an uppercut, then stomping on their heads with a curb-stomp, so much fun. The only problem is the aiming, it's too damn slow this time. Never the less, I'll definitely be picking this up when it comes out now.

The UK 360 limited edition is £39.96 at Amazon though (although the PS3 one is £44.99). The 360's the one to go for though right?

Obviously. You'd be crazy to get anything multi-format on PS3, bar a few titles.

Even with aiming speed set to "fastest" in the control options?

I think most people find the aiming slow because they start aiming as soon as they see an enemy, or stay in aim mode after killing one and moving to the next. What they should do, of course, is let go of aim, face the correct direction then aim again. Or use the quick look (type A controls, bitches, you don't need the sidestep) then aim. Which reminds me - I've only played through the demo twice and didn't think to check - you know when you press the button to look at your buddy, if you aim while doing that, does it keep you facing them?
