Baten Kaitos

Right, I want a new game for my Gamecube. Something I can really get my teeth into.

I've already played and completed Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia, and I greatly enjoyed them both. But as a Cube-owner there's not that much left for me in terms of decent RPGs.

So I'm interested to know what you all thought of Baten Kaitos? Is it worth getting? Will it keep me going over Summer?

Fire Emblem?

I didn't think that was out yet?

I'm not much of a RPG lover myself, but for a card based RPG it turned out to be quite nice. It's way better than Lost Kingdoms. It will keep you going over summer, but only IF you really enjoy the gameplay. Gotta like the card thing.

Cool. Well I love RPGs, so if a non-RPG fan managed to enjoy it, then that's gotta be a good sign. I think the whole card system sounds cool.

More opinions please!

I've had Baten Kaitos ages but am still to compete it, I've played through quite a bit of it though and found it a great little unique RPG. The game has its minor faults, with such a fresh approach some things were bound to sit uncomfortably, the overall experience isn't tarnished by them much though.

I haven't played it that much so can't offer a formal opinion but the voice acting is dire. Turn it off as soon as you can and then you can enjoy the game.

It's a wierd one isn't it. For whatever reason, the voices sound as if recorded while speaking through a tube.

I'm a huge Monolithsoft fan (for Xenosaga, natch) but I really didn't like Baten Kaitos. The music was manky and the voice acting is beyond dire - seriously, you won't believe how bad acting (and sound quality) can be.

I didn't find the story very interesting, either.

I just bought this last week and I think it's fantastic! The rendered backgrounds are beautiful and the music suits the game perfectly. I just turned the voice-acting off as soon as I started playing. I didn't really know what to expect, and I'm not the world's biggest card-battle fan, but the battle system basically works as a FFVII-style turn-based reaction test, with your 'hand' just dictating the options available to you.

I've just reached that cloud city after defeating Giacomo for the firt time - his boss music is brilliant!

I also like the fact that the person actually playing the game (i.e. you) plays an active role in the story of the game, as the guardian spirit of Kalas. He often asks you questions, and you can agree or argue with each other, with your 'trust/bond' rating going up or down accordingly.

It just pips Tales of Symphonia for me, which seemed a bit formulaic, but then I'n not too far into Baten Kaitos yet...

Any more opinions?

i saw Baten Kaitos in forbidden planet might get it because i saw this on cybernet and they seem to like it, the look of its not to bad either

Is Cybernet still going?

Christ, I must have watched that show religously for over 5 years. Then the girl who did the voiceovers became a horrible american man and the whole thing went a bit downhill.

I got BK last weekend and think its great stuff.

I'm enjoying this hugely. As has been said, it's very important that you turn off the spoken voices at the first opportunity, as not only are they poorly acted, the recording quality is abysmal. The dialogue itself however is competent throughout and has some great flourishes of wit and is one of the most well-written games I've played. Faint praise I know, but it frequently manages to surprise and delight with its vocabulary. The blend of animated movement overlaying pre-rendered environments makes the game really beautiful without it feeling like you're sliding across a static image. With the voices off the in-game cutscenes, the game's unrushed pace and its text box-led events lends the whole thing a pleasant storybook feel. The places one visits become steadily more diverse in aesthetic and theme, too, and there are nice digressions to the gameplay - 8-bit styled mazes, army management, shooting gallery minigames to name a few.

I've just polished off Disc 1 and the story's really ramping up. If you've got this untouched and collecting dust from two generations ago and you've got a GameCube or a Wii lying around you could do worse than giving it a go. It's got the soul-in-beta of Xenoblade Chronicles and is pretty damn good.

Baiten Kaitos is amazing. Sadly the second is Us only :(

Brilliant take on the traditional RPG themes with a great card combat system. I like how the main guy changes in personality over the story as well. Highly recommended.
