Oh man.

I thought you'd be putting them in a trackorder for us to listen to. Some "master of the order" should do this now. Who's the guy who did the track order for all those famous albums? We need him.

Put mine first.

It would have been a stroke of pure genius to get all you cunts lovely people to email the tracks to me in the correct order. We'd be here til next year! Don't worry Jimmy, I've hopefully found some flow in there, just look at the back covers n00b ;)

-EDIT- I'll add it to the first post actually.

Porcupine Tree - .3

This is from scribble's CD from January this year.

I knew nothing about Porcupine Tree before he sent me his CD, and I know very little about them now, other than that I really like them, but clearly scribble is a big fan - he included two of their tracks on the CD.

The second ('Voyage 34 - Phase One') was the one that initially stood out. It's a 13-minute epic concept trippy-rock thing with a narration about someone taking drugs. It's a little gimmicky, so I decided not to subject you to it here

.3 is more of a grower. Again it's quite epic and amospheric, but it pulls it together towards the end with a catchy tune/vocal and has a fair bit of pace and excitement about it.

Actually, it's now one of my least favourite tracks from the In Absentia album (particular favourites being Gravity Eyelids and Blackest Eyes*). I guess scribble must have used all the best ones on previous mix CDs :(

As you might of guessed, I've got into the band quite a bit thanks to this mix CD, and I now have four of their albums. My favourite is probably In Absentia, but the XM radio session album has some really nice versions of their songs too (very limited release - you'll have to download it).

I particularly like the way they can be chilled out and relaxing as background music when you feel that way, but also powerful and driving when you feel like that (stuff like Wedding Nails and The Creator has a Mastertape on In Absentia really rock out). They remind me of Cave In quite a bit in that way. I guess the correct label would be prog rock, but they're a lot better than that implies.

*I don't know what's going on with the eye theme

My choice was a toss up between 'Out Hud - Old Nude' (from Murdock) and 'Infected Mushroom - Dancing with Kadafi' (from Zeroborta). It was quite a tough decision as both are really great tracks.

I bought the album that 'Kadafi' was from and was very dissapointed to find that the rest of it was very dull psy-trance. It was also over 10 minutes in length and I felt that it was a track that you need to be in the mood for to enjoy properly which is why I didn't choose it.

I know hardly anything about Out Hud, although Murdock did include another of their tracks on his cd that month which was also quite good. Initially, I was not that impressed with the track, I quote myself from May's Mix Club thread:

Out Hud - Old Nude

A jolly little dub track. I was going to say I didn't like it but on a second listen it's not so bad. Reminds me of the excellent Carly Simon - Why?

Hardly a 'best track I ever recieved' comment! But it was a grower and over the month I listened to it again and again (along with Carly Simon's 'Why?') and.... I don't know, maybe it was the overdose of sunshine, but I really got into it. It's jolly, it's happy, it's instant and it will probably remind me of the summer in years to come.

I still know nothing else about Out Hud, maybe I should look into them a bit more to find some more hidden gems. Or maybe they will remain as 'that band who did that lovely little summer tune'. Thanks again Murdock.

I really like .3, but yeah.. I tend to put at least one PT song on every mixtape I make :S

(Slightly off topic-Biggerbob, if you're missing any PT Cd's and can't find a download I can send you a CD-R.. I've got some of the rarer OOP stuff- Metanoia, XMI and II, and Recordings.)

Global Communication - 5:23 (Farley)

This was my choice. The original mixtape led to Farley sending me along

a lot of great, similar, music; as I hadn't really heard much like this before. Its very atmospheric, and chilled out.. reminds me a little of Boards of Canada.

I've been meaning to look into other stuff they have recorded, and side projects from the group... might be an idea for me to do that soon..

I've still not bought the album though.. I'm waiting on the re-release in September. :(

I'm well impressed on having 2 of my tracks in this CD. I'm off to listen to the whole thing now.

Wow. I did a double take when I saw the tracklist. Colour me surprised.:(

You should check out "How Long", it's fairly similar, probably my favourite Out Hud track.

As for my choice, I didn't have any choice to make because it instantly became one of my favourite tracks of the year when I heard it on Timdp's April Shower mix. I'm talking about Rachel Starr - Till There Was You (Gabriel & Dresden remix).

I was a big fan of G&D's remix of Andain's 'Beautiful Things' and I'm listening to their Bloom compilation atm, but this tune caught me by surprise.

I love trance and this is just one of those perfect trance tracks with great beats and gorgeous hooks. Cheers to Tim for incorporating it into a great mix with breaks and progressive stuff, it stood out all the more as a result.

Here's a rejigged rear inlay that I made from a template, for anyone who cares. Printing at 300dpi should have it as the right size as well:

That Beck/Boards of Canada track is ace by the way, as is that freaking gorgeous 'Porcupine Tree' one :D

David Heath - Vincent Gallo - A Falling Down (Billy Brown)

It's worth mentioning that this track is actually called 'A Falling Down Billy Brown', as well as being originally submitted to me by Billy Brown.

Probably should have mentioned that!

I'm up to track 6 having just downloaded and burned this, and I already feel the need to post about my favourite tracks :( Bodes well for the rest of it!

I already love track 2, Mum – Green Grass Of Tunnel and track 6, Global Communication - 5:23. Both made me smile as soon as they came on, really cool stuff. I enjoyed the Out Hud tune too although maybe a bit odd for me.

On with the listening... :o

EDIT:

Total agreement here. Great couple of tunes. Just got to the Kelpe track and that's wicked as well, the girl talking over it really reminds me of Underworld - Little Speaker and Two Months Off....

Sorry to be a pain but is there not one zip with all the tracks in? its a bit of an arse to sift through it all.

If not then i'll most probs take it upon myself to host a zip on my personal webspace for a few days so we dont have to feck about.

You know, for all the worries about it being a complete mess of styles, I could easily believe that all the tracks on this CD were chosen by the same person.

Is this the sound of Rllmuk?

Or is it just the inoffensive middle-ground between the extremes of everybody's tastes?

I like almost all of the tracks on there, though (I'd be suprised if I didn't given they all come with the reccomendation of two people chosen at random). Is the listing above and on the back of the covers supposed to be a suggested track listing, though? I'm not really convinced with putting so many laid back tracks up front - CDs should start with a bang and grab your attention, IMO.

(plus, most of my favourite tracks on there seem to be towards the end, which can't be right :P )

(Slightly off topic-Biggerbob, if you're missing any PT Cd's and can't find a download I can send you a CD-R.. I've got some of the rarer OOP stuff- Metanoia, XMI and II, and Recordings.)

I would definitely be interested it that.

I'm building up quite a Porcupine Tree collection*. I've now got:

In Absentia

Deadwing

Stupid Dream

XM1

Futile EP (literally just downloded)

and the Phase 34 track off your mix CD

*I'm ashamed to say, all downloaded. For a band so freely available online, they're really hard to find in shops. And when I do find a CD by them it's always Deadwing, which is my least favourite of what I've downloaded, and then at a stupid price. I almost bought Phase 34 the other week, but I couldn't justify £10 for 4 tracks to myself, however long they are. I'll definitely pick up In Absentia if I see it, though, even at a (reasonably) silly price.

Listened to the lot and the only other tracks I like are the Kelpe track and the Global Communication one, but then again I only usually like electronic stuff.

I'd heard that Kelpe track before, gotta check out their stuff.

It's alright I suppose <_<

That Rachel Starr track is some quality shit, I've had it on repeat in my car for the past month It never gets old hehe.

I think the CD flows nicely considering how many different styles it has squished in there. Well done everyone!

I was in Cardiff yesterday, and the HMV there had loads of Porcupine Treee stuff. So I got my copy of In Absentia (for sixteen fucking pounds ;) ) and I also got the live album Coma Divine.

I've only listened to a bit of Coma Divine so far, but it seems quite nice - it's not very metal, but it's got lots of instrumentals with some very nice guitar work. Nice background music.

I was having trouble deciding whether to get Coma Divine, Up the Downstair or Phase 34. Are these other two any good, Scribble? And what's the best Porcupine Tree CD to get (that I haven't got), anyway?

Also, there was an advert inside the CD for Blackfield (featuring the guy from Porcupine Tree and some other guy). Is this the same Blackfield that did Cloudy Now? I loved that song.
