Zelda: Twilight Princess

Finished the GC version today.

Fantastic stuff - best Zelda game since OoT imho, and one of the very best games I've played in the last 5 or so years. Nintendo were on top form here.

Spoilers and comments for the whole game follow.

I've always preferred the dungeon parts so it's nice that they kept this the focus this time round. Some clever puzzles too. The double clawshot in the Sky city was wonderful, and the boss of that dungeon was an amazing thrill. Loved the music change as you landed on its back.

Some of the actual dungeon music was a bit disappointing for me - not as good as Oot or WW I don't think.

The Twlilight Palace reminded me of the Ruins in Phantasy Star Online, especially the mirror's concentric

circles effects. And that music as the hand approached - brrrrrr.

Combat was the most enjoyable and satisfying of all of the Zelda games.

Looking forward to playing the Wii version sometime next year, although it must be said the GC version controlled beautifully.

Up to the sixth dungeon now and I think this is defiantly my game of the year if not decade. Gushing praise escapes from my every orifice.

The only thing I would add would be some kind of treasure hunting guild. I LOVE LOVE LOVE exploring places for treasure (and I've spent most of my time doing so) but most of the time it ends in me just finding some money that I don't need. For example I spent at least an hour trying to get to a chest in Kakariko until the solution popped into my head :

Chicken!!

but all I got was some lousy rupees. I even went back into the Goron mines to get a chest you can't get to until you get the hookshot. I'd love for there to be a place that tracks your treasure finding and gives you rewards for the more you find.

I'm positive I got the Hylian Shield before the second dungeon. Seemed useless heading into that dungeon without one.

Didn't notice you could get it beforehand. I went in with the wooden shield, it got burned up, I left and bought another, it got burned up so I left and got another and then didn't bother equipping it. That way it shut minda up about me not having one (the only reason I kept going and buying them) but didn't cost me 50 rupees everytime I fucked up dodging an attack.

I wish they'd let me take rupees out of a chest even though my wallet is full. It pisses me off when there are loads of 'unopened' chests on a dungeon map that ive already been to. Can make ti confusing when trying to find heart chests.

Yep - odd design that. They thought the old way of wasting Rupees was broken so needed fixing, but ended up making it worse. Best thing they could have done was do away with the wallet altogether.

IMO the whole Surpus Rupees thing is because Nintendo want to make sure there's plenty available for those who use a lot of them up by having to get plenty of Bombs, Potions, Etc, or who play the Minigames tonnes.

This is a problem for more experienced players though, as if your're good enough to solve the puzzles & complete the challenges without burning through Rupees having them as a reward is'nt much use. Many's the time as I approached a chest I was thinking "piece of heart... come on piece of heart... NOT rupees...".

I thought that at almost every chest! Heart pieces > Rupees. Maybe they should make it 6 pieces to a heart piece and have EVEN MORE PIECES in the next one. Finding a heart piece is super satisfying, and I could always do with more satisfaction. Then again, too many would dilute the experience. Oh god, dilemma.

Out of interest, how do you get a bigger wallet? The whole rupee/chest thing is annoying me as well what with having the 300 max in my wallet.

Agitha on the East Street of Castle Town. The first Golden Bug you give her will get you the 600 Rupee Wallet.

I really don't get these complaints about the ending. The final fight sequence was marvellous, and the stuff over and inbetween those sections and the end credits was pretty much what had to happen for 'closure'.

Just for reference: if they'd had that amount of climactic gameplay and storyline conclusion at the end of Halo 2 it'd be proclaimed as a work of artistic genius (or at the end of Halo, for that matter).

Maybe I'm missing some post-ironic humour stuff here, but if not I'd say you're all completely insane if you think the ending of TP was 'shit', 'nothing', or something like that.

Sorry to chip in with that one whinge about the thread, but of all the criticisms you can make of this game I think that one is the most absurd; some of the others I can go with if I dispel my Zelda-love-aura. (For example, I can go with the criticism that the storyline isn't played out as dramatically or vigorously as, say, MM, so by definition the ending doesn't pay off so much - but, given the game, I'm hard pressed to think what you could do better with the ending.)

Is that the biggest wallet you can get?

And is it worth funding the 2000 rupee shop opening? Not that ive got anything else to spend my money on...

I think you can get a 1,000 rupee wallet.

If you help the Goron at the South Hyrule Castle entrance then you only have to donate 200 rupees.

I don't think there was quite enough closure. Unless I missed something, who the hell is...

The ghost knight/wolf that teaches you the moves? I was expecting some sort of massive revelation regarding that chap...there oughta at least be some sort of explanation as to why he also tranforms into a wolf.

I thought the game vaguely hinted that he was a failed/ancient hero of time/link/type fellow in one of his cutscenes, maybe from the last skill. Can't remember exactly though.

EDIT: Sorry, this is for Number 28.

You probably want that only if you also want some massive explanation as to why a swordfighter clad in green also transforms into a wolf, and is the latest in a long line of heroes...

I mean, it ain't Kubrick, is it?

Well, you kinda do get an explanation for those things, however weak. I was just expecting to find out what he's all about, like "Now i've taught you how to fight, you might want to know that i'm actually your dad, Dave. Yeah, sorry for running off after your conception an' all that." There's a point, I was wondering about Link's past a bit too.

but isn't that the point - Link is always just a normal dude who finds out he has a purpose. The only Zelda where his origins were a really unknown was TOoT, because he was an elf.

In this game, he's a human - but all the humans in TP have pointy ears.

Amongst the many things that Zelda games always do well are 'endings'. I still rank the ending of TOoT as being the best game ending ever (the whole thing, the fight with Gannon in both forms, the escape from the tower etc)... if TP is anything as good as that, I might just burst.

But - the pain - I don't want this game to end. I absoloutely love it.

Right. That's it. I'm going to rewrite the entire game. Every cutscene. Every location. Every boss. Every character. Every line of dialogue. Every scrap of mythology. Every single little fucking detail: rewritten. Twilight Princess: Reimagined. Then I am going to post it in the Creative Folder, and you are all going to read it, and you are all going to declare it ingenious, and thus you will all come to recognise Twilight Princess for the underwhelming, unimaginitive, unfulfilling work of anus it truly is. Yes. Just wait.
