Zelda: Twilight Princess

Didn't Miyamoto mention in an interview a while back that the name 'Link' was chosen to represent the 'link' between the player and the gameworld? Therefore Link was always going to remain a blank slate of sorts.

Enjoyed TP although I was hoping for some...

proper exploration of the Twilight Realm as a human just like in LTTP.

The game wasn't rushed but did feel a bit dumbed down, especially...

the straight forward dungeons and their easily defeated bosses...

but that's probably because for some people this is going to be their first LoZ game and should hopefully leave a positive lasting impression.

What a strange place this can be, where someone is called a retard for loving something unreservedly.

I think I'll leave you all to your bitterness and disappointment now. I'm still trying to work out how to get that chest in the fountain outside South Castle Town.

w00t - I just worked that bit out...

it contains...

100 rupees! argh... still, it's handy if you need money for the bridge. There's another chest near to it with another 100 rupees in - so it's actually come in very handy for me.

Non gameplay related question that I hope someone can help with.

I'm playing TP on the Wii via RGB on a 32" LCD. This game in particular seems to look very muddy to me and I honestly find it hard to pick out smaller objects in the distance (I can see a "lump" but little more) Other games via the same set up (Rayman and GC version of Zelda WW) look fine and crisp.

Is this just the look of the game or can anyone say if component leads would make a huge difference?

I hate myself for sounding like a graphics-slag but it really is starting to put me off the game- and give me a bloody headache.

Cheers

Dungeon 5 was my least favourite too. I seemed to get stuck for 30mins on every single puzzle, and it seemed to take hours to complete it, I thought it was never going to end. :S Still it had some nice moments, and a pretty sweet item.

Blasting everything in my path with the ball and chain that got in my way before was immensely satisfying...

Dungeon 6 is my favourite so far though I think, just finished that last night.

Hi guys, it's me again, looking to drain your chests of Zelda knowledge.

I've heard much about the fishing hole, and would have thought, after completing the fourth dungeon, I'd have access to the area, wherever it is.

No?

Yep, check the area just past the Zoras Kingdom.

The fishing hole is a game in itself, spent ages there this afternoon, wicked stuff.

Is there a "sweet spot" for Zelda's difficulty level that would satisfy longtime fans while not putting off newcomers, or is it always going to be have to be pitched a little easier to keep it accessible?

I mentioned in a previous post that now this game has brought new players up to speed any sequel could try more, but can a new Zelda afford to start off more hardcore even with Twilight Princess serving as an introduction?

The weird thing is, I think most people are ok with high difficulty in Zelda games. Link's Awakening is probably one of the most fondly-remembered games in the series, and it had both twatty puzzles and tough combat (in places). It seems to be pure invention on Nintendo's part that folks are unwilling to slog it out... not that I think the combat should become a chore...

How do you get to the chest?! It's doing my nut in!

I only just figured it out myself after passing it by a dozen times. I stopped & took a good look around the immediate area round the chest, considered my items & finally noticed the

Spinner track between the pillars

Completed this yesterday with around 50 hours on the clock. Really enjoyed it.

The dungeons were pretty good although the fifth one was really annoying. Probably the only time I was bothered by the respawning enemies in the dungeons.

The bosses were great. My favourites would have to be the final boss and those in dungeons 4 and 7.

Story stuff

I may be remembering some of this wrong so feel free to point out any mistakes.

I also get the impression that Ganondorf was thrown in at the last minute. None of the usual Triforce backstory was mentioned for example. Isn't he normally out to get the 3 pieces of it so he can rule the world?

I thought it was weird that Zelda was pretty much forgotten about until near the end when Midna suddenly started talking about reviving her. She then reappeared in the last dungeon with no explanation.

It doesn't really matter that much but the story does make the game look unfinished IMO.

Its a brillant game however, my only gripe and the only big one is the bosses are too easy with far too little health. I wish they didn't feel so 'disposable'.

That problem is easily solved - difficulty settings. Still, as Capcom frequently demonstrate, it's a fine line between challenging and annoying.

I'm surprised to hear that people didn't like dungeon 5. It was by far my favourite in the game followed by the fourth and final dungeons.

Overall I found TP to be the most enjoyable 3D Zelda so far. It took me 55 hours spread across just one week to finish it, unlike the others which I gave up on several times (I never even completed OoT despite reaching the final dungeon).

There are a still couple of things in the game world that I'm puzzled by:

Is it impossible to get into the house below the giant tree in the first village? It's locked day and night and I didn't find an entrance point while searching the area in wolf form.

Also, are there no fish in Lake Hylia?

I looked around for rails! Didn't notice any.

It's well blended into the architecture. Just consider how a spinner would have to reach the raised platform & work backwards from there

This is one of the thing's that makes Zelda great IMO. Being stumped by a puzzle & yet knowing that there must be a solution. And then that Ah-Ha! moment when you figure it out & you feel all clever.

How long will it be before we can get a fix of that feeling again? Nobody but Nintendo seems to be willing to make games like Zelda as when they do they are'nt as successful (Alundra, Okami). In the absence of downloadable content (i'm still hoping  ) Phantom Hourglass it is then?

I just don't "get" where you're coming from at all with this.

When did it "go all LotR"? I thought it was stylistically coherent all the way through, with the story bookended marvellously by the Ordon Village stuff.

You basically sound like you had expectations for the game which didn't fit your vision of what you think a Zelda game should be. As ever though, I feel pretty happy to be the one sitting back thinking, "Ah, that was lovely" as the credits roll, rather than coldly dissecting it in the way you have. My detailed reminiscences of the game should tell you that I'm not content to just have any old Zelda game with Ganondorf slapped on, and that I do actually care about the content. In many ways, what you do forms its own story, which is why Zelda games have actually always been able to get away with the barest skeleton of a plot. Contrary to what you state, the storyline has never been a large part of any Zelda game - it's all about the "doing".

Still, you didn't like OoT or RE4 ( :D ), so to a large extent we have fundamentally irreconcilable viewpoints. Nevertheless, I'm glad you enjoed the bits you did (you did enjoy some of it, right?)

.::: I enjoyed the game. I didn't enjoy the background for it. ;)

Fair cop if you like it yourself, but to me the story is just too fragmented and segmented. If you can't see that the start is in a completely different style compared to the ending and hide deficiencies behind the excuse that "it's just a Zelda" then I'm afraid any further discussion would be pointless. You simply cannot comprehend the problem I see then. :)

Happy new year btw! ;)

I love the Zelda "AHA!" moments... and the satisfaction you get when you solve a puzzle. I don't know of any other game series that does this.... fundamentally, Zelda is not an RPG - it's a puzzle game. One of the reasons my wife enjoys watching me play so much is because she can help with the puzzles as well... like 'why don't you try shooting that with the arrows' or 'use your boots to do that'...

As I said to her yesterday, I just wish there was one Zelda game that was constantly being updated where the story would just keep going.

Online Zelda FTL btw... this is one of the many games which should always remain a single player experience.
