The future of in game advertising?

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/wipeout-pure/...cles-116408.php

In-game advertising is rearing its ugly head again, but at least this time it comes with some sort of payout for gamers. Starting Aug. 11, Playstation Portable owners will be able to download Coke-themed add-ons for their copy of Wipeout Pure. The racer downloads will include new vehicles and courses with a Coke twist.

A great thing if you ask me, I dont mind ads if they mean free content for games, I can see xbox 360 being all over this.

Free coke cars for PGR3 anyone?

it would be great to see companies battle it out to create the BEST car in a game just so people download it.

You could try loads out and then find one that really works for you and be happy to represent Red Bull or whatever.

As long as advertising is there ina way that supplements a believable environment Im all for it.

But the minute it starts forcing itself upon you, delaying your game experience, is when it will start to piss me off.

I have never understood why games like Forza for instance, dont bring out a monthly update that changes every advertising boards in game. This way they get to sell the space over and over again (assuming there is that much of a market for it)

Part of the appeal about buying the advertising in the game currently is that the advertising is permenant, anyone in the world that EVER plays the game, will see the adverts, no matter what.

If the company started offering monthly based advertising, then pricing would become alot more complicated, and less appealing.

Also it was be a strain on developer resources, while at the minute it's simply put in there and stays.

I have no problem with in-game advertising per se. In games like GTA for example, seeing billboards with correct products advertised, for example, to me adds to the immersion and helps create a "real" feeling to the world. The problem is if it's in your face. I don't like the idea of the cars in a racing game for example emblazoned with company logos, that for me is just tacky.

I quite like this idea. Optional downloads that actually add something to the game is much less obtrusive than I thought most in-game advertising would be.

Maybe it's some kind of weird balance to the Pepsi DS?

Like in the way that the cars in F1 all look tacky with the adverts?

Its been tried before and has sorta failed. Remember James Pond II with its love of penguin bars? How about Zool. the problem is, is that companies dont see a market for their adverts in games in this sort of way, plus loads of strict regulations affect it too. Such as in the UK theres laws about advertising unhealthy eating through adverts, so a game based on 7up featuing cool spot probably wouldnt be allowed here anymore. Theres all sorts of reasons, some rather complex about why games arnt covered in adverts.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind racing a new Coke vehicle, aslong as it was subtle. Perhaps just coloured red with a white undulating line down the centre. If it had DRINK COKE YOU FUCKERS written on the side, I'd be less impressed.

Actually, I'd be quite impressed if it said that.

Seriously though, you know when you start a game and you get unskipable splash screens with the developer'sname? Imagine that, but in game. On load screens, scene transitions, when saving... It would be shit. Far fetched? Check out TV at the moment and see how intrusive ads can be, like the way the volume goes up when they come on.

I can never watch a Coke commerical without thinking about Bill Hicks who once said the ultimate commercial was thus:

"Here's the woman's face, beautiful. Camera pulls back, naked breasts. Camera pulls back, she's totally naked. Legs apart. Two fingers, right here, and it just says, 'Drink Coke'."

Don't know about Forza but are the adverts on GT4 not just there for realism, so namco for instance hasn't had to pay for their logo to be included. Sure it had some message on startup about that

One problem I foresee with this is that Coke are almost certain to be pushing for their vehicles to be the best in the game, naturally they'll want punters to aquate Coke with winning. So sponsored content will fuck about with the game dynamics unless the developers are exceptionally stubborn. I don't think that'd be a good thing.
